Dr. Howe Replies To Stranges
Dear Editor:
I would like to resHond to the “Stranges
Blast Dr. Howe, Carroll”’ (actually it was only
a “whimper”) which appeared in your last edi
tion (Feb. 3).
I would like to publicly apologize to Pat
Strange for misquoting her in my response
dated Jan. 27. As I was reading her article, 1
noticed her reference to ““this third world coun
ty” and misread the word “‘county’’ as “‘coun
try.” The word ‘““county” appeared at the end
of a line and was hyphenated and I just misread
it.
As to reading my “Bible very carefully” I
would have hketf for the Stranges to have paid
closer attention to my words in the above
mentioned regponse. I explained that my com
ments would be based upon the Greek
manuscripts (Textus Recegtus) and not on the
English re-translation of the King James Bible
(The KJ is not a first generation Enlglish
translation). The passage in question (I Peter
3:3) comes within the context of I Peter 3:1-6.
It is clear in the original language, as I believe
Christian Comments On Letter
Dear Editor:
I would like to comment on the letter writ
ten by Pat Stran}fe. I do not know the others
mentioned, Dr. Howe or Mr. Carroll. I didn’t
write this to take sides in whatever dispute they
have but I would like to shed some light about
the ?uestions asked. I am not a Bibfe scholar
but I do know Jesus as my Saviour.
The word of God has stood for more than
2,000 years. Satan knew that if humans, as a
whole, chose to accept the Bible as our only ac
curate record of creation, his cause would be
lost. So he ins:gired some of his cohorts to in
troduce the ridiculous theory of evolution as a
substitute and deceptive religion. The Apostle
Peter . correctly prophesied of scoffers who
would appear in the last days, walking after
their own lusts and sowing seed of doubt con
cerning the will of God.
Our Bible continues to be the number one
book in the world, for it alone possesses the
power to change lives, for it represents the
authorg,f' and will of God to all who will accept
it. To all unbelievers who refuse to submit to
its beautiful truth and precepts it represents
the eternal justice and jugf‘ement of God. No
matter who tries to discredit its contents, our
Bible will always stand. God will be God. As
I heard my Ipast:or once say, I've never seen my
brain, but I know I have one. Think about it!
But the natural man does not receive the
things of the Spirit, for they are foolishness to
him; nor can he know them, because they are
spiritually discerned.
The Bible is the basis of all law and order.
It is the ultimate autho;i::x; and concerning sin
and deceit, it says they will be punished. Judge
ment is an inevitable Itapointment. It is one
that no man will miss. Know Him and you will
know His Book.
The Lord is not slack concerning His pro
mises, as some count slackness, but is lonfi suf
fex'infl toward us, not willing that any should
_perish but that all should come to repentance.
... 2 Peter 3:16-18 sa{s, “As also in all his
epistles, speaking in them of these things; in
which are some things hard to be understood,
which they that are unlearned and unstable
wrest, as they do also the other scriPtures, un
to their own destruction. Ye therefore, belov
ed, seeinafsye know these things before, beware
lest ye also, being led away with the error of
the wicked, fall from your own steadfastness.
But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our
Lorfr and Saviour Jesus Christ. To Him be
glory both now and forever — Amen.
?he prophesies of the Bible are unfolding
right before our eyes and yet people want to
look away or choose not to believe it. God’s still
in charge, He’s trustworthy and He cares for
you.
When we allowed prayer to be banned from
our schools, it was replaced with guns and
violence. When people work to take God out,
Satan rushes in that open door and this is only
one example.
Take a look at the world. We are now being
Minister Responds To Stranges
Dear Editor:
1t seems to me that much of the discussion
between Mr. and Mrs. Strange, John Carroll
and Donald Howe is an illustration of the need
to reason together and “rightlf' divide the word
of truth.” (2 Timothy 2:15). I realize that my
space is limited, however I would like to pre
sent what seems to be the obvious meaning of
the Scriptures alluded to by the Strangles.
1. It is correct that Joseph ‘‘had absolutely
nothing to do with the birth of Christ.”
However, the promise of the Saviour was
throuih Abraham’s seed and David’s seed.
Joseph and Ma? were both descendants of
David, but in different lines. The promise was
made to David, and since Jesus was not the
physical son of Joseph, it was important to
show the Jews that Mary was also descended
from David.
2. What Paul and Peter forbid is the gaudy,
extravagant d;?lay of hair, jewelry and
clothing. A careful reading of 1 Timothy 2:9 and
1 Peter 3:3 will show that both are concerned _
with “adornment.” What kind of adornment?
Not like the ungodly! Juvenal, Clement of Alex
andria and other historians of the first century
record how Roman and Greek women would
plait gold or silver into their hair in a showy,
conspicuous way to call undue attention to
themselves. They would laden themselves with
numerous rings, bracelets and necklaces. They
would wear the most exfiensive clothes possi
ble to call attention to their outward display.
Paul and Peter are saying that the inner per
son is more important than a gaudy display of
hair, jewelry or clothes.
3. Matthew 27:46 does not say that these
were the last words of Jesus on the cross. Verse
50 states that he “cried again with a loud
voice.”” Matthew doesn’t record the words but
Luke does, ‘Father, into thy hands I commend
my spirit.” (Luke 23:46). :
4. What is looked on as ‘“‘mass murder” is

and soil cleaner. Environmentally

ing more harmful solvents in various pro
cesses. For example, in another 15 years
they may replace dangerous chemicals us
it is in the English translation, that Peter was
not forbidding the use of jewelry any more than
the wearinf of clothes but was contrasting out
ward dxs? ay with inward beauty.
The fact that the Stranges found my
answers to their questions as ‘“inadequate” is
disappointing.
It is true that *“‘no original writings exist of
the Old or New Testaments’ but it is not true
that ‘“no one really knows if any translation is
accurate.” The Biblical science of canonicity
adeguataely deals with the subject of manuscript
evidence. There are no known original
manuscripts of the Bible; in fact, none are need
ed because of the abundance of manuscript
copies.’

told to accept homosexuality as an alternate
lifestyle. It says in Isaiah 5:20, ‘“Woe unto them
that call evil good, and good evil, that put
darkness for light, and light for darkness, tgat
put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter.”
Now, I would like to answer some of your
questions as best as I can remember them.
(1) To the question of Jesus’ last words. In
Matthew 27 you need to read on down to verse
50 which s?'s, “Jesus, when he had cried again
with a loud voice, yielded up the ghost.” In
Luke 23:46 it says, ‘“And when Jesus had cried
with a loud voice, he said Father, into thy hands
I commend my spirit and having said this, he
gave us the ghost.
(2) Jesus is clearly the only Son of God. As
we accept Jesus as our Saviour it makes us
“adopted”’ sons and daughters of God.
(3) Jo%?h was considered Jesus’ earthly
father. Today it would be like a surro%ag
father. Many more things of His life prove hi
to be the true Son of God that was prophesied
in the Old Testament.
(4) It is not disfileasing to God for us to
dress well and be well groomed. However, above
all we must seek spiritual beauty, which does
not come from outward appearance. Our man
ner of dress should be modest and decent.
(5) Samson was a leader whose role was to
deliver Israel from the Philistines. He had a
weakness for Delilah and revealed to her his
strength was in his hair. That was a direct
disobedience to God. When they cut his hair he
lost his strength. As a prisoner of the
Philistines he prayed to God to strengthen him
once more, God answered that prayer, all the
rulers of the Philistines were there and were kill
ed which delivered Israel as glanned. Samson
asked God to let him die with the Philistines.
So actually this incident was an answer to Sam
son’s prayer and proof that God can use
whomever he chooses in spite of their weakness.
I have no desire to e[)ut anyone down. I
would only hope this to help and encourage you.
By the Wf]:i, your list of friends was im
pressive. I'd like to show my coneern for you
and everyone reading this by telling you
something of far greater value. It is snmpfy that
the greatest gift in the world can be yours for
the asking.
That gft is the friendship of my best friend
— Jesus Christ. He took away my sins and guilt
and gives me joy and peace. I find in Him my
life, my hope, my everything. He invites you,
‘‘Come unto me, all ye that la%mr and are heavy
ladelsl, and I will give you rest.” — Matthew
11:28.
He saves, He keeps, He satisfies! Introduc
ing Him to you is the best way I know to Sfiy
I care about you. With nail-scarred hands He
reaches out tml; and waits for you to reach
back in faith. is no one you will ever meet
who can do for you what Jesus can do. Do not

actually the judgment of God upon a wicked na
tion. Leviticus 18 records the ‘“doings of the
land of ngyit” and ‘‘the land of Canaan.” (v.
3). Some of the things they were ‘“doing’’ were:
incest, (vs. 6-18); adultery, (v. 20); sacrificing
children in fire, (v. 21); homosexuality, (v. 22);
and bestiality, (v. 23). For these reasons God
said he was driving out the nations (vvs. 24, 25).
The Philistines were part of these wicked na
gg‘:‘s and were being punished for their evil
eds.
5. Jesus Christ is indeed ‘““the onli begotten
Son of God.” This means that he is the one and
only human ‘“begotten’ by the Father. Every
other human being since Adam and Eve was
born by natural reproduction. Jesus was born
by miraculous conception and virgin birth. The
“sons of God”’ in Genesis 6:2, 4, were not angels
for the following reasons: (I.} Angels are not
mentioned in the context, neither in the Hebrew
nor the Septuagint. (2.) The term ‘“‘sons of God”
is never %Eplied to angels anywhere in the Bi
bie. (3.) Matthew 22:30 clearly teaches that
aniels do not marry and are thus inca%able of
fathering children as was the case in Genesis
6:4. The sons of God mentioned here are the
ritghteous descendants of Seth. The daughters
of men are the unrighteous descendants of Cain.
The inter-marriage of the two brought great
wickedness into the earth, which caused God
to destroy the wicked in the flood.
There maK be inconsistency and even
h%mris‘y in the lives of those professing to be
“Christian.” However, this does not mean that
the Bible is inconsistent or contradictory. May
we all study it carefully, not to argue, but to
learn its meaning.

More Topies From John Carroll
Dear Editor:
Isn't it stranfge how some gfople’s minds
work? I spoke of how Pat and Lewis Strange
are alienating the pe(a)fl(le of Chattooga County,
and they want to talk about their friends in
Atlanta. Wonder if they’d still be friends if their
religious beliefs or love of country were
questioned?
And, lo! what have we here now but another
Bible-re-writer. Ms. Anne Otwell tells us that
our Founding Fathers did not establish this
country under “our” God, but rather a God of
Nature! Wow! talk about revising historg! Now
we've got non-believers revising our Bible (us
ed to swear-in the President, Vice-President,
etc., on down to the lowliest office-holder). Well,
Anne, you may worship who (or what) you want
to believe in, but please don’t insult learned
Christians (or even the “yokels”’ you referred
to) bKltellmg' them that our forefathers worship
ged ature rather than God. Will she and the
tlila‘?ges re-interpret the Talmud and Koran as
well?
At this point, I'd like to say that I'm ex
tremely glleased to see the increase in Letters
to the Editor. More than any other section of
a newspager, the Letters page is the Peoples’
forum and is, to me, the most interesting part
of any new?aper or magazine.
Let’s add some more otgf)ics.
1. The RICO law should be repealed, or
revised, so it does not pertain to honest pro
testors (had it been applied during the (fivxl
Rights protests, we’s probably still have
segreglgted washrooms).
2. The AIDS law should be re%ealed. This
law, passed in the 'Bos, makes AIDS the only
communicable disease in this country where the
victim is not required to name the source of
his/her infection. This supposedlly; allowed
homosexual victims to remain ‘““in the closet.”
It was a stupid law to start with, and probably
more than any other factor, allowed continued
spread of the disease.
3. The Insurance Assets Law should be
repealed. This law, passed in the 19305, permits
the insurance industry not to reveal what it
does with the money it receives from insurance
premiums. Thus everr year thez can ask for
rate hikes by claiming losses which, by law, can
not be proved. Thus, there is no incentive for
insurance companies to control medical costs.

Return To Faith Of Fathers
Dear Editor: o
Yes, let’s return to the Faith of our Fathers
(Malachi 4:6). George Washington, a praying
man if there ever was one, and a believer in the
Word of God, won the battle of Valley Forge
on his knees first! A great fog and rain rolled
in, enablin§ them to cross the Potomac and sur

salary, for army supplies were very low. In fact,
if it hadn’t been for a Jew in New York by the

we would have lost the war. Washington was

Nation’s Principles Based On Bible
Dear Editor:
It seems that over the last few weeks, there
have been several individuals who are greatly
concerned about expressing an “‘anti-Christian™’
sentiment .in our public forum in the local
newspaper. I am very thankful that we as
citizens still have the privilege of “‘Freedom of
Speech” and, that we may express our thoughts
and concerns in a ‘“‘Free Press.”
These “freedoms”’ that we still enjoy, linger
not only from the decisions made years ago by
those who apgtoved the Declaration of In
dependence and the U. S. Constitution, but also
by the actions and the prayers of the many
Pilgrims who first landed on our'shores. As
American Colonization beglnn in the 1600 s, God
and the gospel of the Bible was at the center
of every effort and action by the individual col
onialists and the English government to
establish settlements in this New Land. One of
many examples of this motivation can be found
in the Charter granted by Kn;f James I on
Atpril 10, 1606 to the “¥eople of Virginia.” Part
of that Charter is as follows: ~
“We, greatly commending, and l:graciously

tourists and TV. Castro should be careful what
he asks for (trade and tourism with the United

5. The people of ‘‘Atlanta inside the
Beltway’’ need to rejoin the rest of Georgia.
Stop fighting the Outer Beltway (it would
relieve much of Atlanta’s confiestion), and stop
fighting the %eo%le who work in Atlanta and
live in the suburbs. The worst thins for City
Hall would be to have all those white folks move
back into Atlanta. And discouraging com
muters from using their cars would affect all
of those stores, garafies, parking lots, gas sta
tions, dealers, etc., that exist to service them.
Not to mention the malls that would love to
move to the suburbs. After all, how many shop
ping bags can you carry on a commuter train?
And the Atlanta Constitution had better start
realizing that most of its constituency is out
side the Beltway before a rival paper appears
to take those customers away.
6. NATO was established to defend Europe
from terror from the East, yet it cannot even
defend the Bosnians from the Surbs and Coats.
Sort of reminds you of the early days of Hitler
doesn’t it? When will the Europeans ever get
some backbone?
7. Last, but hardly least, bless the industries
and businesses that have chosen Chattooga
County for their home. DesE’i;e the railinis of
the Stranges and their kind, it is these
businesses that continue to provide jobs and
wages for our citizens. Not all of us were lucky
enough to inherit a business in Atlanta. And
without the world’s largest producer of denim,
or our carfiet producers, our glove makers, etc.,

K’ our nation has never been a Christian
nation, but it’s founding princitfies were based
on solid Biblical values, not purposes of
men. As a nation set of this foundatior, prayer
has always been a part of American life, both
in and outside of the government. Since 1784,
when Gecrge Washington proclaimed the first

state and local ogzxyals have always felt the
desire to have God bless our civic functions,

After reviewing a Rortion of American
History that is often left out of most history
books, we still have not focused upon the cen

so concerned with denouncing Christianity to
day and in the é)ast. ;
:‘ei:isfli; of all, Christianity is noi:l (éhi‘urch, or

in order that real truth may be determined.
Christianity is not a set of standards by
which we must live our lives in order to make
it through Heaven’s Gate. The Bible does give
us God’s Law to guide our steps in a moral,

laws will not give us our “ticket to heaven.”
Christianity is a “personal’ relationship bet

Truth To Prevail?
AS IT TURNS out, Gennifer Flowers, the Arkansas
Troopers, and accounts of bimbo eruptions were merely
appetizers. The main course, the story that lingers, con
cerns much more onerous matters than alleged infidelities.
It’s about the Whitewater Development Corporation.
The Clinton’s feared this story as early as 1991 when
areport they commissioned showed Whitewater to be their
most problematic point. It took the tragic death of Vin
cent Foster to bring the bright light of public suspicion
into this matter.
* * *
PRESIDENT Clinton's legendary temper was uncork
ed over the unending speculation about Whitewater ac
cording to White House insiders. Will Rogers said,
“Nothing makes a man or body of men as mad as the
truth. If there is no truth in it they will laugh it off.”
The Clinton’s partners in Whitewater Development
Corporation were James and Susan McDougal. James
McDougal was the principal owner of the failed Madison
Guaranty Savings & Loan. The involvement of the Mrs.
Clinton’s law firm, the missing Whitewater files, and most
importantly, the tragic death of Mr. Foster raise serious
questions.
* # *
THE FACT OF Hillary Clinton claiming no knowledge
of the workings of Whitewater is suspicious when you con
sider she sought power of attorney over the project. The
fact of her former law partner and White House advisor,
Vincent Foster, allegedly killing himself on the very same
day the FBI obtained a search warrant to seek evidence
in the Whitewater affair is suspicious.
What constitutes a conflict of interest in such matters?
Is it Governor Bill Clinton’s appointing the Arkansas
State Bank regulators who would examine Mr.
McDougal’s Madison Guaranty? A protege of Governor
Clinton, Beverly Bassett, served as Arkansas commis
sioner of securities. It was she who approved an unusual
issue of preferred stock by Madison Guaranty. By the way,
the attorney for Madison Guaranty in this matter was
Hillary Rodham Clinton. The regulators have had a hard
time discerning where Madison Guaranty ends and
Whitewater Development begins — so vague and comm
ingled are the records.
1 @ * *
IT MIGHT seem trite, but why would Mrs. Clinton
deduct the value of Mr. Clinton’s used underwear donated
to charity and overlook a ‘“‘business loss”” with Whitewater
of $68,900 when filing taxes?
The President is right to permit an investigation with
an independent counsel. As we said in this space three
weeks ago, “‘lf there is nothing to these allegations, the
president should insist the Justice Department or the Con
gress investigate them at once for there is no greater
defense than the truth.”
* & *
IN STUDYING Whitewater, one thing does become
clear. The whole affair is very, very complicated. It re
‘quires detailed study of intricate financial records. It will
take some time to ferret out the truth. Those of us who
try to study an issue such as this still wind up speculating
on matters which will take an expert months to ascertain.
The delays in moving forward with an investigation
have only added unnecessary fuel to the fires of suspicion.
The panicky ‘“Make it go away!” mentality in the White
House just made matters worse. Perhaps now, many of
the questions can be answered and the President can turn
hisattentiontomatteisof}reat.erconcerntousall
AS WISE AS President Clinton is to sanction an in
-vestigation, one nettlesome item remains. The statute of
limitations on these matters runs out in March 1994. That
doesn’t leave much time for an independent counsel to
work through the complicated maze of material g reach
some conclusions. Have the Clinton’s “ walled”” on
Whitewater while the time runs out? If, as the President
implies, he has no fear of the truth, he can solve this pro
blem simply by waiving the statute of limitations. @
I quote the wisdom of Mark Twain who said, “Truth
