Charged In Fake Theft
An alleged residential
bur, that happened this
fall has been solved with
the arrest of two people, accor
ding to Inv. Charles Elsberry
of the Chattooga County
Sheriff's Office.
Melissa M. Cabe, 24, Sum
merville Rte. 1, was charged
with theft by conversion and
false report of a crime Friday,
he said.
A second person, Brian
Huihes, 23, Rossville, was be
ing held for Chattooga lawmen
in the Walker County jail ear
ly this week, Elsberry said.
Hughes was charged with be
ing a party to the crime of theft
by conversion, he added.
A 20-inch television set
valued at $4Bl and a stereo
system valued at $220 were
pawned at the Chattanooga

pt. 24, , allegedly by
Ms. Cabe and %leglghes,
Elsberry said.
The items were being
rented from Farmers Fur
niture, Summerville, the in
vestigator added, and Ms.
Cabe reported the items had
been stolen in a burglary, he
added.
Hughes was also wanted on
a parole violation, the in
vestigator said.
VAN THEFT
Meanwhile, a 15-year-old
boy has been charged with
stealing a 1977 model van in
East Point and driving it to
behind Lé'erly School.
Inv. Elsberry said he and
Sgt. Ken Anderson placed the
van in the county’s impound
lot after it was found by Dale
Wflfin%{lm. school princifia].
They then learned that it had
been stolen in Fulton County.
A search cf the van turned
:g clothing and letters address
to the boy. He was found at
an Oak Street house in Sum
merville, Elsberry said, and
keys to the van were found in
the boy's clothing. He was
placed in the Rome Youth
Development Center.
Three people were arrested
in connection with an incident
on Central Avenue just south
of Trion late Monday night and
early Tuesday morning.

report indicated.
Dep. Stan Smith said a
$1,200 stereo system was
stolen from the 1988 model
sports utility vehicle of
Richard B. Copeland, Kirby
Street, Summerville, on Halls
Valley Road Sunday afternoon.
Damage to the vehicle also
amounted to about SIOO,
Smith estimated.
Richard Scott Thompson,
17, Trion Rte. 1, was charsed
with theft al:l)l, taking Saturday
after he allegedly talked a
juvenile out of a .30-.30 caliber
rifle between October, 1993
and Friday.
BATTERY
A Summerville man was
charged with simple battery
under the Family Violence Act
Saturday morning after he
allegedly hit his wife.

a report of a fight behind the

restaurant, location not listed,
late Saturday nifiht. No arrests
were made at the time.
DOGS SHOT
Judy Smith, 323 Penn St.,
Trion, reported that someone
shot her dog Monday, accor
ding to Corporal Tara Camp
bell. One neighbor’s dog was
also shot, she said, while
another neighbor’s dog was
drowned and thrown in the
Chattooga River. The in
vestigation was continuing
Tuesday.

Molestation
Charged To
Lyerly Man
A Lyerly area man has been
charged with molesting a now
13-year-old since she was in the
third grade.
Chief Inv. P. R. Hill of the
Chattooga County Sheriff’s Of
fice arrested David H. Ragan,
33, on charges of child molesta
tion and enticing a child for in
decent purposes this past
Thursday.
It was the third arrest on
child molestation charges that
Inv. Hill had made tfiis past
week in Chattooga County.
None was related to the other.
Hill said the investifiation
is continuing into whether
Ragan might have allegedly
molested more than one girl.
Ragan allegedly molested
the girl at least 10 times over
a geriod of time, Hill reported.
The child was quoted as saying
that she had told her mother
about the incidents but was
allegedly told not to talk about
the situation, the investigator
reported.
The Chattooga D(ifiartment
of Family and Children Ser
vices is assisting with the in
vestigation, Hill said.
BOE Meeting
The Chattooga Board of
Education will meet for a work
session at 6:30 p.m. today.
The boar S’s regular
meeting has been postponed
from Monday to 7 E.m. Feb. 17.
An agenda for that meeting
will be set at today’s work ses
sion, said Superintendent
Frank Stewart.

A 36-year-old Summerville

charged Sunday with being a
convicted felon in possession of
a firearm.
Det. Westbrooks said
Wilson bought a .12 gauge
shotgun at Wal-Mart on Jan.
22. Wilson had been convicted
on May 13, 1988 of being an
habitual violator and placed on
five years probation, the detec
tive said.

PacTel Cellular
Local Provider
PacTel Cellular is the only
local lE)rovider with two towers
that hopefully wiélefrovide con
tinuous cellular telephone ser
vice throughout Summerville,
and into Rome.
At least as soon as they get
the Highway 27 tower on line.
All that according to Jeff
Tenney, regional marketing
manager for PacTel Cellular,
who spoke to the Summerville-
Trion Optimist Club this past
Friday.
Tenney was introduced by
Ricky Prince, manager of
Georgia Telecom, Summerville.
Tenney told Optimists that
so far, service is working well
within the city of Summerville,
off the Cooper Hill tower, but
not so smoothly through
Taylor Ridge.
“We're working on the
direction of the tower,” he said.
The company also plans to
put another tower, called a
micro cell, in Trion.
PACTEL
Tenney explained that
Georfia Telecom provides its
cellular service through
PacTel, which is a regional
operatinfi company, one of the
largest global telecommunica
tions companies.
Some of the “not too fa"

ney will be the use of a soci
security number as a phone
number for the home, office
and car.

items of interest include hand
held facsimile machines and
computers.
Two Charged
In Possession
Of Whiskey
Two men have been ar
rested by Summerville police
on charges of possessing five
and one-fourth gallons of non
tax-paid whiskey.
Th%' were identified by
Det. David Westbrooks as
Roland ‘‘Pete” Wooten, 56,
Allred Street, Summerville,
and Hg:’xfi Gaddiston, 49,
Summerville.
Westbrooks said they were
arrested in a raid on Wooten’s
home Tuesday mornini.
The detective said he was
told that the liquor had been
bought at a Rome retail store.
None of the bottles had tax
stamps on them, he said, and
Rome police have been asked
to assist in the investigation,
Participating in the raid
besides Westbrooks were Capt.

Tracy Maddux and Tom
Kendrick.
