Still Not
In Shape
Dirt roads that had been
heavily damaged in a January
freeze and thaw were passable
by early this week but some
were still ‘‘not in good shape.”
Chatt.oolga County Commis
sioner Jim Parker said Monday
that the county placed between
300 and 400 tons of rock on
Bradcris Road alone atop
Lookout Mountain. Other
roads on the mountain that
were ‘“‘rocked”’ by the counti
included Hawkins Road, Hig
Rock Road, and North
Coalmine Road, he said.
Josh Ward Road in the Oak
Hill community west of Lyer
ly was also in bad shape, he
said.
Most of the dirt roads that
were heavily damaged pro
bably won’t recover fully from
the geeze and thaw until this
sgn'ng, despite the best efforts
of county road crews, he
indicated.
Parker said he still plans to
pave most of the remaining 50
to 60 miles of dirt roads during
the next three to four years.

state to the county began to
show up in December. A total
of $41,439 was given to the
county that month, compared
with $135,176 in December,
1992.
Collections during the first
three months of this year also
are expected to be lower than
would have been the case had
there not been a three-month
interruption in the sales tax
this past year.
Distributions to the county
and Trion school systems were
not interrupted since the one
percent education sales tax is
permanent.
The county school system
received $1,222,912 in revenue
during 1993, an increase of
$73,692 over the 1992 total of
$1,149,220. The increase
amounted to 6 percent.

smallest amount — $87,350 —
was handed down by the state
in February, 1993. The largest
check to the schools was
distributed in August. It
amounted to $117,968.
Meanwhile, the Town of
Trion received $491,231 for its
schools this past year. That
represented an increase of
$31,456 over the 1992 figure of
$459,775, or 6.4 percent.
BIGGEST
The biggest check, $47,740,
also was distributed to the
town in August. The smallest,
$35,350, was given to the town
in February.
Combined, both school
systems received $1,714,143 in
1993, an increase of $105,148
over the 1992 total of
$1,608,995, a 6.1 percent
increase.
