Thompson Second In State
Saturday was a disappoin
tin%day for Chris Thompson.
he Chattooga Fligh
wrestler left the Class AA state
tournament as the runner-up in
the 130-pound weight class.
His second place finish was the
onl;i‘ showin(i; for Chattooga.
he Indians team fiad
finished third in the area and
qualified nine wrestlers for the
state tournament in Dublin.
Thompson, a senior, was
defeated in the state final b
Ryan Lucas of Lovett Schoo{
Atlanta, in a 6-4 decision. It
was a rematch of the area
championship, which Lucas
also won.
And though the outcome of
the state final was the same,
Chattooga coach Mike Miller
said Thompson wrestled “a
much better match.”
“Of course we were disap
inted, but in four years Chris
E:s finished third in the state
once and second in the state
three times. He's won more
than 100 matches and lost less
than 10.
A lot of guys who wrestle
would love to have that record.
We’rcilf)roud of Chris.”
Miller added that he was
disappointed also for the other
eight wrestlers who qualified
for state but did not place in
the tournament. He cited
Shawn McCary (112) and Tom
my Dover (189) who won two
matches each but were
eliminated before the consola
tion finals Saturday afternoon.

“We’lliave to have a good ef
fort out of everybody.”
If the Lady Indians win to

first quarter. John Fain made
several strong inside plays for
Chattooga, and the Indians
shot well from the outside.
Things began to go Coosa’s
way in the second quarter,
after the Eagles scored a three
pointer, then turned a steal in
to a goal to cut the Indians’
lead to one. By halftime, the
Eagles were up by six, 43-37.
The wind gone from their
sails, the Indians failed to
recover, and Coosa’s margin
expanded in the second half.
The final was 86-74.
Kenyon London and Cedric
McClinic were Chattooga’s top
scorers, with 16 points each.
Coach Ed Harden at
tributed the Indians’ tourna
ment loss to LaFayette to their
performance at the foul line.
“We could've iced the game if
we’'d made our free throws,” he
said.
Fain and Dana Bankston
fouled out of the game in the
second half and “we plai\:ed
some kids who haven’t had
much playing time this year.”
The Indians finished the
season with a dismal 7-16
record.
“Not a very successful
basketball year,”” Harden com
mented as he picked up a pile
of basketball jerseys to be
laundered, a sure sign that the
season was over.
