TRION’S JASON McWHORTER WINS STATE CHAMPIONSHIP
Pinned Opponent Allen Giles, Right, In Final Match
Trion Bulldogs Champs
from front page
time. Nobody wanted that
night to end.’
Dafffron added thal;’l the
thrill of winning a state title af
fected more than his team.
*“The whole community and
the entire school are real ex
cited. It's not often a school
can boast a state champion at
anXthmg It pulls the school,
kids, and the community a lit
tle closer toi&;ther."
Trion’s three state cham
fiions said they were as or more
appy for the team’s win than
for their own individual titles.
“WE DESERVE IT”
“We worked hard as a
team,” McWhorter said. ‘lt
was a long road, and we
deserveit.” As for winning the
individual state crown his
senior year, “I can’t explain it.
It’s very exciting, but I'm
more excited about our team
championship.”
“I feel great for the team
and everlybody," Harris said.
“‘God helped us through it.”
Brock also ascribeg divine
credit to his win.
“Philippians 4:13, he said.
‘I can do all things through
Christ which strengtheneth
me.’ I kept saying that over in
my head.” 4
Brock had been beaten by
Armuchee’s Burns twice dur
ing the year, Daffron said.
Burns haJ, defeated him for the
area title, and had won a state
championship. He and Brock
met z:fain in the semi-finals
Saturday morning.
“I tried to focus on the
match,” Brock said. “I kept
believing that I could win, that
if I gave it my all, I wouldn’t
be a loser.”
TAKEDOWN
Burns was ahead by two
points in what was a close
match, when, with three
seconds left, Brock scored a
takedown, earning two E\oints
and a spot in the state finals.
“That was a mental match,
but it took heart, too,” said
Daffron. “I think Eric wanted
it just a little more. Mind has
a lot to do with it, but so does
heart. These guys wanted to be
individual chamEs, but they
wanted a team championship,
too.”
Trion was represented at
the state tournament by seven
other wrestlers, including
Dustin Starkey (103), Dustin
Cordell (119), Cody Kirk (135),
Eric Peace (145), Brandon
Veatch (152), Danny Johnson
(189), and Jimmy Dale Hensley
(220). Each won at least one
match and scored team points
for Trion.

“They all had a part in it,”
Daffron said. ‘“They may not
have won an individual cham
pionship, but even if they never
do, they're still state cham
pions.”
Trion has qualified
wrestlers for the state tourna
ment during the past five years
and in several prior years.
Before this year, Jimmy Har
din, Stacy Searles, and Jim
Purcell were the school’s only
three state champions.
Daffron noted that 50
wrestlers (fiarticipated on
Trion’s middle school and var
sity teams this year, and seven
of the 12 state qualifiers will
return to wrestle next year.
Plus, he’s started an
elementary wrestling program
for students in grades one
through six. A total of 64
students began practicing two
weeks ago and will participate
in their first tournament this
weekend.
“For a school this size,
that’s a whole lot of kids. And
winning state, there’s no tell
ing how many we’ll have out
next year. People want to be a
part of a successful program.”
