U.S. Sen. Paul Coverdell

dent’s rights to a moment of
silence or prayer in school.
Amendment No. 1382 slfix
sored by Senator Jesse Helms
stated that “No funds made
available through the Depart
ment of Education under (Ei)oals
2000 shall be available to any
state or local educational agen
cy which has a Kohc{y of deny
ing, or which e fectivef;'
prevents particigxation in
prayer in public schools by in
dividuals on a voluntary
basis.”
The Helms amendment
passed, 75-22.
Amendment No. 1383 slgon
sored by Senator John Dan
forth stated that, “It is the
sense of the Senate that local
educational agencies should en
courage a brief period of daily
silence for students for the gur
pose of contemplating their
aspirations; for considering
what they hope and plan to ac
complish that day; for con
sidering how their own actions
of that day will effect
themselves and others around
them, including their
schoolmates, friends and
families; for drawing strength
from whatever personal moral
or religious beliefs or positive
values they hold; and for such
other introsEection and reflec
tio(lll as will filep t?em ac(i:;velop
and p them for achieving
the fl;fi of this bill.”
e Danforth amendment
passed, 78-8.
1 stron%z believe that
there should be a relationship
between what a candidate says
when running for office and
what he or she does if elected
to office. Throughout my cam
paign I pledged my support for
a moment of silence or prager
in schools and I have worked
today.to deliver on that pro
mise,” 'said Coverdell.
