TWO MOTORISTS INJURED IN HIGHLAND STREET ACCIDENT

Seven Hurt In Accidents
Seven motorists were hurt
in traffic accidents in Chat
tooia County during this past
week.
Two passengers complained
of ixg’uries after a two-vehicle
accident in Menlo Monday
night.
Trooper Arnold Steward of
the Georgia State Patrol said
Nathan Lee Floyd, 17, Sum
merville Rte. 3, and Michael B.
Thompson, 15, Summerville
Rte. 2, complained about being
hurt after the mishap.
It occurred on Jamestown
Road at Ridge Drive, Steward
said, about 7 p.m. and involv
ed a 1988 model car driven by
Richard S. Thompson, 17,
Trion Rte. 1, and a 1977 model
car driven by Effie Jo Davis,
67, Jamestown Road, Menlo.
FRIDAY
At least one person was
hurt in a two-vehicle accident
on North Commerce Street at
Highland Street about 10:45
a.m. Friday, according to Of
ficer Tracy Maddux of the
Summerville Police
Department.
Johnny L. Mitchell, 25,
Kelley Street, Summerville,
and Michael Mitchell, 4, same
address, were taken to Chat
tooga County Hospital by the
Chattooga Emergency Medical
Service (EMS) after the acci
dent. Maddux said the child
was taken to the hospital as a
precaution.
Reports stated that a 1974
model car driven by Georgia B.
Henson, 80, Highland Street,
struck a 1982 model car driven
by Johnny L. Mitchell at the
intersection.
Two people were injured in
a two-car accident on Highland
Street at Third Avenue about
9 a.m. Friday, according to
Sgt. Duane Jackson of the
Summerville' Police
Department.
Redecea E. Adams, 33,
Willow Street, Summerville,
and Leann Adams, 13, Willow
Street, Summerville, were
taken to Redmond Regional
Medical Center, Rome, by the
Chattooga EMS.
Sgt. Jackson said that a
1986 car driven by Ms. Adams
was struck by a 1986 model car
driven by John A. Wilson, 64,
Allred Street, Summerville.
TWO HURT
Two motorists were injured
in a two-vehicle accident on
Highway 114 at Hamp Brewer
Road about 7:50 a.m. Thurs
day, refported Trooper David
Eury of the State Patrol. It oc
curred 2.6 miles west of
Summerville.
Edwin Bruce Cordell, 56,
Summerville Rte. 3, was in
jured in the accident, Trooper
Eury said, and James Scruggs,
59, Summerville, complained of
injuries after the collision.
They were taken to either
Chattooga County Hospital or
Redmond Regional Medical
Center by the gllxatt,ooga EMS,
Eury said.
The trooper reported that a
1986 model pickup truck
driven by Corcfill and a 1994
model pickup truck driven by
James Neal Scruggs Jr., 32,
Summerville, were both travel
ing west on Highway 114 at
the time of the accident.

The Cordell truck had slow
ed for a vehicle to turn left on
to Brewer Road, reports in
dicated, when it was struck b
the Scruggs truck. The Cordefi
vehicle was knocked off the
road and into an embankment
where it overturned onto its
side, Trooper Eury said.
TRAFFIC
No one was injured but traf
fic was backed up for awhile on
Highway 100 near the Chat
tooga River bridge about 6:45
a.m. Thursday, accordin%l to
Dep. Gary McGill of the Chat
too§f County Sheriff’s Office.
cGill said also that a
tractor-trailer truck that fell off
the edge of a driveway when it
attempted to back into the
drive damaged the concrete
and knockecf down a mailbox.
They were owned by Steve
Ayers, Raccoon Ranch Road,
Summerville, McGill said.
The 1989 model truck was
driven by Richard L. Stark Jr.,
34, Terre Haute, Ind.

Compilation of state-wide
school Sropout statistics for
the 1992-93 school year have
not yet been compiled.
A spokesman for the
Georgia Department of Educa
tion said the department had
changed the way in which it
compiled the information, caus
ing an unforeseen problem in
getting all the material into a
report form.
The department decided to
determine how many students
dropped out of school during
the summer months between
school terms in 1992, ethnic
statistics, and the reasons for
droning out of school.
n the past, the department
compiled information that in
dicated only how many
students dropped out during a
school term, not taking into ac
count summer dropouts from
one term to another.
The Summerville News has
published annually the dropout
information on the Chattooga
County and Trion city school
systems. When the state has

Clerk Resigns
A clerk in the Chattooga
County Sheriff’s Office accus
ed of threatening a Floyd
County woman has resigned.
Sheriff Ralph Kellett said
Monday that Martha L. Nor
ton, 35, Summerville Rte. 3,
had resigned her clerk’s post
with his office.
She was charged on a Floyd
County warrant with making
terroristic threats and acts on
Feb. 7 against a Cave Spring
woman and her dl::ghber.
Sheriff Kellett suspend
ed Ms. Norton pending resolu
tion of the charges.
The sheriff said the charges
stemmed from a ‘‘domestic
situation.” The warrant was
taken by Diane AEan, a clerk
in the ot}t"ice of clerk of court in
Floyd County and the wife of
a Floyd deputy sheriff.
