prevention program on our Natural Gas System. It is a pro
gram to reduce the risk of excavation damage to buried Gas
Lines. Excavation damage is the leading cause of Gas
Pipeline Accidents.
We ask if you plan any excavation activities, please take the

We will locate the Gas Lines that may be in the excavation
area.

prevent disruption of services, expensive repairs, or personal

Sealed Bid Notice
Pursuant to an act of the legislature, HB No. 414
(Georgia Laws 1956, Page 2899, as amended), seal
ed bids will be received by the Chattooga County Com
missioner. Said bids must be sealed with the words
“‘Sealed Bid” written across the outside of the envelope
and received in the office of the Commissioner in the
Chattooga County Courthouse Annex, Summerville,
Georgia, on or before 10 o’clock a.m., Friday, May 1,
1998, at which time bids will be opened.
The Commissioner reserves the right to purchase
any or all items on bid at the offered price. Also, the
Commissioner reserves the right to reject any and all
bids. .
We are asking bids on meals to feed Chattooga
County jail inmates. The meals are to be furnished three
times daily and are to be picked up by Sheriff's Depart
ment personnel at approximately 7:30 a.m., 12 noon,
and 5:30 p.m. daily. The number of meals will vary from
day to day and will be called in to the provider by the
Sheriff’s Department at approximately 7 a.m., 11:30
a.m., and 5 p.m. At present, approximately 50 inmates
are incarcerated, however, this number will vary. Cof
fee or milk shall be made available to be served with
breakfast, coffee or tea is to be served with the other
two meals. There shall be no more than seven (7) hours
between meals. The diet shall conform to the Georgia
Dietetic Association Diet Manual and shall include a
minimum of 3,100 calories daily. The provider shall fur
nish to the Commissioner, in advance, weekly meal
plans and menus which have been approved in writing
by a licensed or registered dietician or nutritionist. The
provider shall furnish written certification from such
dietician or nutritionist to the Commissioner. The pro
vider shall furnish drinking cups, eating utensils, and
individual packets of salt and pepper with this service.
The service shall be on a ninety (90) day agreement
which includes all holidays within that ninety (90) day
period and shall begin Thursday, May 7, 1998.

Senate Approves Coverdell’s
Education Savings Accounts
U.S. Senator Paul Coverdell
(R-GA) won Senate approval of
his bipartisan education reform
last week, which includes the
Coverdell-Torricelli Education
Savings Accounts (ESAs) for
primary and secondary school
expenses. A Conference Com
mittee will now be appointed to
reconcile the Senate bill with
the version of the measure
flassed by the House of
epresentatives last year.
“Today's vote represents
both a great victory for our Na
tion’s schools and a giant step
forward in the joume‘y toward
genuine education reform. We
are on the verge of providing
desperately needed education
assistance to millions of
American families, and I look
forward to producing a final
bill that successfully
negotiates the differences in
the House and Senate ver
sions,”” Coverdell remarked im
mediately following the vote.

A total of 56 Senators
voted for the Coverdell in
itiative, including Democratic
cosponsors Robert Torricelli of
New J erseg and Joseph Lieber

Trion City Schools is conducting a child-find survey
to identify any children ages 0-21 within the city limits
of Trion who rnay need to be served in special educa
tion pro%r'ams for the 1998-99 school year. This in
cludes children with disabilities ages three and four.
This survey is required under Part B of the Individuals
with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), as amended by
Public Law 94-142.

Police Investigate
Fight Incidents Here
A Cherokee Street resident
looked out her window and saw
aman in a cowboy hat bust.ing
out the windows of her 199

Summerville Police reports.
The car was gust sitting in
the front yard, but the guy in
the hat was taki:]f homerun
cuts with a baseball bat to her
car. The cowboy jumped into
his Chevrolet pickup and drove
off. The resident called the
police.
Once the police arrived, the
lady further told officers she
tried stopging the cowboy and
his truck. Yet, as she approach
ed the truck, the guy with the
hat started pulling off.
This did not stop the resi
dent as she tried pursuing him
further on foot. In the mifist of
the chase on foot, the truck
drove over her foot. Swelling
and bruising was noted on her
foot, according to police
reports.
The following day, Stan
Smith spotted the guy wearing
the hat and arrested him. In
the car with the man also turn
ed out to be an accomplice in
damaging the Cherokee St.
vehicle.
FIGHT
Another fight occurred last
Wednesday on Scoggins St.
Two white males brawled in
the streets of Summerville.
They were later arrested for
disorderly conduct, according
to police reiorts.
On Sixth St.,, a resident
reported that several females
came up to her and ;umfled her.
They struck her in the face
causingl a light cut on her lip.
She refused medical treatment,
according to reports.

white car smashed into a

A Cedar Bluff, Ala., man
reported that someone stole a
1995 Monte Carlo from the lot
of Ingles. The car was sitting
on the lot while he was atten
ding the Adairsville Yrom. The
incident is still under
investigation.
BIKE
A Hawkins Dr. resident
reported that someone stole his
son’s 10-speed bike. The bike
had tape on the kick stand, ac
cording to reports.
GAS
Someone stole $5 in gas
from Benny’'s Too. The man
who stole the gas was in a
1980 s model Ford station
wagon, according to police
reports.
