County Investigators Return From Ohio
Chattooga County investi
§ators were to have arrived back
rom Norwalk, Ohio late last
night with information that
might give law enforcement of
ficials evidence whether a 24-
year-old woman was mutilated
and cannibalized in Chattooga
Countz or Dekalb County, Ala.
Chattooga County Sheriff’s
Investigator Eddie Colbert and
an investigator from the Lookout
Mountain Judicial Court Circuit
District Attorney’s office, Johnny
Bass, were sent to Norwalk Sun
day to gather clues into the slay
ing of Patricia Ann Booher.
Both Booher and the chief
suspect, Hayward W. Bissell, 37,
were from Norwalk.
“He is gathering whatever
information and background
stuff he can find. I can’t go into
any details or anything like that,”
Sheriff Kellett said.
Whatever evidence found in
Norwalk may determine whether
the chief suspect will be tried in
Summerville or Fort Payne.
WITNESSES
Another witness came for
ward this past week and reported
to investigators that she had had
a frifihtening encounter with
Bissell. The 400-pound suspect
followed her to her Summerville
area home, according to Sheriff
Kellett.
“These folks are really upset
about it. She came forward and
reported it. We appreciate it,”
Kellett said. “They asked us not
to reveal who they are, because
they are really upset about it.”
Multiple witnesses have
said they saw suspect Bissell and
victim Booher sitting in a car

outside the Discount Food Store
on the Trion-Teloga Road, said
Sheriff Kellett. It is located near
Chamlee Skatinf Rink. Trion
Police Chief Charles Latta is one
of those witnesses.
BLOOD FOUND?
One significant clue to
where the trail could be held
might rest with potential evi
dence found outside the Dis
count Food Mart, Kellett said.
Earlf' Wednesday mornirflfg,
one local law enforcement offi
cial said the evidence collected at
the convenience store was in
deed blood. However, DNA test
ing to match the blood at the
store and Booher’s blood has not
been completed.
Both Kellett and Dekalb
County Sheriff Cecil Reed are
awaiting for test results from
possibleilood splatters found on
the ground outside the Trion
convenience store. The conve
nience store’s security cameras
captured Bissell and Booher to
sether on videotape the apparent
ay of the murder.
If GBI technicians decide
she was slashed to death in Trion
or elsewhere in Chattooga
County, any potential criminal
trial likely would be held in Sum
merville.
. “There hasn’t been much of
any significant change,” Kellett
said. “We've got nothing back
from the crime lab.”
A GBI crime scene techni
cian from Calhoun blocked off
the Discount Food Store parking
lot and scoured the grounds for
clues on Wednesday, Jan. 26.

any evidence at the site was un
likely because of recent bad

possible blood splatters were dis

gravel parking lot, he said.
The GBI technician used fo
rensic techniques to %gxhther the
stains on the ground. They were
being tested at the John Frank

GBI Crime Laboratory,
Pennville.
Kellett said Tuesday that
any DNA testing on the possible
blood spatters and blood ob

Atlanta or elsewhere,
Bissell, now housed in a

said.
The Discount Food security
camera also captured Bissell and
the 4'10” 105-pound Ms. Booher
on videotape at about 2 ftp.m. on
Snrcllday, Jan. 23, Sheriff Kellett
said.
TRION STORE
Two store clerks said they
also saw Bissell’s blue and silver
1988 Lincoln Town Car sittin%in
front of the store on Jan. 23. The
store was closed for most of the
day because an ice storm termi
nated power to the building, of
ficials said.
Power was restored around
1:15 p.m. and the clerks began
making preparations to reopen.
Store clerks said they remem
bered Bissell’s car parked in front
of the store when they came to
work. When the store re-opened,
both Bissell and Booher came
inside, investigators said.

CARMOVED
Neither Bissell nor Ms.
Booher bought anything in the
store, reports indicated. Sheriff
Kellett said he suspected Bissell
and Ms. Booher used the store’s
restroom and left. An undeter
mined time later, Bissell moved
the Lincoln to the parking area
west of the store. It was about
then when Chief Latta, who was
not in uniform, and another of
ficer said they walked in the store
for coffee.
Other people have also re
gorted seeing Bissell and Ms.
ooher in Chattooga County.
One of the earliest reports
came Sunday momi:':f, Jan. 23.
Kellett said an Orchard Hill Road
resident stopped on the roadwar
about 10:30 a.m. to see if Bissell
had car trouble and needed help.
CRYING
Ms. Booher was in the pas
senger seat with her face par
tially covered, the motorist told
authorities. Sheriff Kellett said
the resident reported that Ms.
Booher’s face was red and she
was crying.
Others saw the two drivinfgf
arp(;md the county, the sheri
said.
Kellett noted that everyone
who saw Bissell driving around
Chattoo%a County after the
couple left the Trion store said
Bissell ap%eared to be alone.
The sheriff said it would be
speculation to guess where Ms.
Booher was during those times.
Bissell and Ms. Booher were
reportedly traveling from
Norwalk to visit his parents in

MUTILATION
Ms. Booher'’s clothed, muti
lated body was discovered
strapped by a seat belt to the
front fiassenger seat of Bissell’s
car when he was captured near
Hammondville, Ala. on Monday,
Jan. 24. Hammondpville is near
the foot of Lookout Mountain
below Mentone, between Valley
Head and I-59.
Sheriff Kellett said he hoped
the murder scene turns out to be
in Alabama and Bissell remains
in Alabama. The alleged slayer
terrorized Dekalb County J'ailers
and destroyed toilets and sinks
and other items in his jail cell
before being sent to the state
mental institution.
“The DA and I have dis
cussed if there was any way, if he
does have to come here, if we
could take him straight toamen
tal_élospital," Sheriff Kellett has
said.
ESOPHAGUS
While Bissell was bein§
booked at the Dekalb County jai
on Mondzg', Jan. 24, jailers said
they found part of Ms. Booher’s
esophagus stuffed in one of
Bissell’s pockets. The six-foot
Bissell then lunged toward the
jailers and tried to eat the
esophagus, lawmen said.
Bissell slashed Ms. Booher’s
throat and then cut off her right
hand and left le?, lawmen have
already refio)ort :
Dekalb Sheriff Reed said the
Ohio man then cut out her heart,
liver, esophagus and other or
gans with a larfie hunting knife.
All her organs have been found.
At one time law enforcement of
ficials thought Bissell had
ioufied out and consumed
ooher’s eyeballs. However, ac
cording to a Fort Payne newspa
per, the eyes were later found
pushed up into her skull.
MENTONE WRECK
Bissell crashed the Town
Car into the rear of Donald
Pirch’s car around 3:45 a.m.
(CST) on Monday, Jan. 24 on
Ala. 17, east of Mentone, said
Sheriff Reed.
Pirch fiot out of his car to
check on the wreck and Bissell
ran him over, the sheriff said.
Pirch was flung onto the hood of
the Lincoln Town Car, the sher
iff added. Pirch fell off Bissell’s
car after beinF carried 100 to 150
feet, law enforcement reports
stated.
Bissell then drove toahome
in Mentone. Resident James
Pumphery heard Bissell pull up
and went outside during the
early morning hour, reports con
tinued. Without any warning,
authorities said, Bissell began
stahbbing Pumphery in the stom
ach.
Bissell then killed
Pumphery’s two Labrador Re
trievers. Bissell stabbed both
dogs and they later bled to death,
reports stated.
SHOT FIRED
Bissell then tried forcing his
wa{ into the Pumphery house,
Dekalb authorities reported.
PumPhrey’s wife was inside.
I don't know who fired the
shot. I don’t know if it was her or
him, but someone fired a shot
because they had evidence the
bullet struck the deep freezer,”
Kellett said. “I think it was a .22
(caliber gun). I don’t know
u_rgether it was a handgun or a
rifle.”
Initial reports stated that
Bissell had forced his way inside
the house. However, new infor
mation shows that Bissell tried,
but was unsuccessful.
“They said he got hisarm in
and she ke?lt slamming the door
until he pulled his arm back out
and she was able to latch the
door,” Kellett said.
Bissell finally got back into
his car and left the scene, depu
ties said.
A Valley Head floliceman
then followed Bissell's vehicle
and said he was finally able to
stop the Lincoln near
Hammondville and U.S. 11.
Sheriff Reed said he had
charged Bissell with two counts
of attempted murder and at-
tempted burglary. Murder
charges in the death of Ms.
Booher will not be filed until au
thorities determine where the
crime took place, he said.
No motive for the killing has
been announced by lawmen.
Attorney Hoyt Baugh, who
was appointed to represent
Bissell in Dekalb Count{, told the
news media that Bissell had told
him someone in the CIA had or
dered him to kill Ms. Booher be
cause she was a “double agent”
and was interfering with Bissell’s
unidentified “assignment.”
Neither Bissell nor Ms.
Booher had ang' family or friends
in Dekalb or Chattooga counties,
based on the investigation so far,
Sheriff Reed said.
The couple had been dating
since Aufust, 1999, authorities
said they learned from their fam
ily and friends in Norwalk. Ms.
Booher’s family said Bissell was
“controlling” and that he stalked
her at times, lawmen re%rted.
Ohio human services officials
said Ms. Booher had been clas
sified as “mildly retarded.”
Norwalk lawmen said
Bissell had threatened to kill an
other woman in AuHust, 1999 af
ter accusing her of flattening the
tires on his vehicle.
Officials at a Norwalk clinic
said Bissell also had been treated
for an undisclosed mental grob
lem and once threatened the
clinic when it would not allow
him to obtain more medication.
Bissell later apologized, reports
stated.
He did not have a criminal
record, officers said.
Some news agencies are re
porting that Booher before the
trip to Winterhaven had told
relatives that she was pregnant.
Sheriff Kellett said he’s not seen
anfi' official autopsy regorts or
other information indicating
Booher was pregnant.
