Barr Notes
Tax Penalty
®
On Married
A study released by the
Heritage Foundation, a top
Washington think-tank, reports
that 70,617 couples in Georgia’s
Seventh District are currently
affected by the federal marriage
tax.
Statewide, the study found
that 728,525 Georgia couples are
hurt by the marriage tax.
: Nationall{, over 25 million
couples are affected.
Under current tax law, the
average couple pays a penalty of
$1,400 more in taxes every year
than they would pay if they f\';led
as individuals, said Seventi Dis
trict Congressman Bob Barr.
Middle-income families are hit
hard by this penalty, which be-
Eins to affect families when the
igher earning spouse makes a
little as $20,000 per year, he
said.
“This study proves conclu
sively the president is not level
ing with the American people
when he says Republicans only
support tax relief for wealthy
Americans,” Barr said. “The fact
is, tens of thousands of married
couples here in Georgia’s Sev
enth District are being forced to
pay a tax penalty simply for get
glins married and starting a fam
ily.
“This is one of the most un
fair taxes imaginable,” he said.
“For this reason, I am pleased
that the Republican leadershi
has scheduled a vote on repeal‘Z
ing the tax this week,” Seventh
District couples deserve to be
treated fairly.”
Rep. Barr, a former federal
prosecutor, serves on the House
Judiciary, Banking and Govern
ment Reform Committees.
- In addition to supportin
elimination of the death tax an§
reduction of the capital gains tax,
Rep. Barr has co-sponsored leg
islation to scrap the current tax
code, and replace it with a fairer,
simpler system, such as with a
flat tax or with a national sales
tax.
