Insurance and Safety Fire
Commissioner John Oxendine
said that rewards totaling
$21,500 were approved by the
Georgia Arson Control (GAC)
Program, Inc., at its most recent
meeting.
“I want to thank the Geor
gia Arson Control Program for its
continuing effort to gght arson
in our state,” Oxendine said. “Be
cause of the reward program,
numerous cases have been
solved over the years that would
have been impossible to con
clude without the testimony of
witnesses.”
Through the Arson Reward
Program, rewards of up to
SIO,OOO are given for informa
tion leading to the arrest and
conviction of an arsonist. Anyone
with information about an arson
can call the toll-free arson
hotline at 1-800-282-5804. The
hotline operates 24 hours a day.
Callers can choose to remain
anonymous.
REWARDS
The Geon}ia Arson Control
Program and Commissioner
Oxendine’s office sponsor both
the reward program and the
hotline. Funded by the insurance
industry, the GAC program has
provided Georgians with more
than $620,250 in rewards since
its inception in January 1979.
Those who qualify for
awards include;
— Individuals who have
provided information by calling
the Arson Hotline;
— Individuals who provide
information to local autgorities
and are nominated by a fire chief,
police chief, prosecuting attor
ney, arson investigator or fire
marshal for providing informa
tion; and
— Individuals who provide
information by writing to the
Georgia Arson Control Program
Inc., 551 Thornton Road, Lithia
Springs, Ga. 30122.
Procedures are used to safe
guard the identity of informants
who wish to remain anonymous,
and juveniles (whose identities
must be kept confidential by
state law because of their age).
GAC's board of directors meets
quarterly to conduct business
and review reward requests.
At its most recent meeting,
the board approved the rewarcfs
and elected officers for the year
2000. David Colmans, executive
director of the Georgia Insurance
Information Service, was named
president. Mike Valdez, general
manager of Georgia Underwrit
ing Association, is this year’s sec
retary/treasurer. The immediate
past president is Barbara Stewart
of Cotton States Insurance.
