REV. KEN JOHNSON PREACHES FROM ROOFTOP
Pastor Of Midway Baptist Church
Gospel Message Floats Down
From Top Of Midway Church
By D. J. LAAN
Staff Writer
Preaching behind a lectern
is normal for most ministers on
any given Sunday.
But some members of Mid
way Bagtist Church said the Rev.
Ken Johnson, their pastor, is not
always one to do the “norm.”
For instance, the Rev.
Johnson this past Sunday
climbed to the roof of his Sum
merville church building and
with several members of his con
grefiation seated in metal chairs
in the front yard, preached what
he called “one of my reach your
mountaintop messages.” He also
noted that since the audience
had to stare upward indirectly
toward the sun, he never saw a
drooping eyelid.
CHALLENGE
The Rev. Johnson said he
had previously challenged the
congregation to invite guests to
the church.
“We had a Sunday called
‘Wholeheart’ in which the con
gregation had paper hearts they
tore in half. On one of the halves,
they printed his or her name,” he
said, “and the other half was left
at the front of the church.”
He explained that if a mem
ber brouggt a visitor to church
the following Sunday, the two
hearts wouk% be united on the
display in the foyer of the build
ing.
“I told the congregation that
if we had a good attendance, I
would sing and also preach on
the roof,” he said.
DREADFUL VOICE
Rev. Johnson said he knew
the congregation wouldn’t be
enthused about his singing be

cause his tone has been com
pared to “‘a most unbearable
sound.”
“My dau%hter ‘Cricket’
Thurston actually rates my sing
ing ability at “zero to zero on a
scale of nothing,” the Rev.
Johnson said.
Since the “Wholeheart” visi
tors’ goal was met by church
members, the Rev. Johnson said
on the following Sunday he tried
to sing “Amazing Grace.”
“After the service some of
the members actually told me
that it took, ‘Grace from God' for
them to sit through my singing,”
he said.
The congregation at found
their pastor perched on the top
of the foyer roof near the steeple
with the “good book” in hand on
the next Sunday, Feb 20.
WEATHER
The weather was perfect for
preaching, the Rev. Johnson
said.
“It was about 50 degrees,
the wind was a little brisk but the
sun was warm,” he said.
Some of the elders of the
church said they were concerned
about his we]l-geing.
“I am one of these preach
ers who likes to pace behind the
lectern as I preach. Some of the
brothers were afraid I would for
get where [ was and start pacing
right off the roof,” he said with a
giggle.
One of the elders suggested
that he wear a bungee cors —just
in case, the Rev. Johnson said.
“Well, if I had that bungee
cord on and I went off the roof, I
don’t know if I would have been
yelling ‘Hallelujah!" or ‘Help Me
Lord,” he said with a laush.
The Rev. Johnson said from
the moment he climbed to the
top of the roof, he began to no
tice the presence of the Holy
Spirit.
“He was there from the be
ginninE of the message to the
end,” the preacher said. “I can’t
totally describe the feeling to
you. It’s like an excitement and
a peace-all at once.”
The Rev. Johnson said it
was the second time he has
preached from a rooftop. He was
the minister of Subligna Baptist
Church about 10 years ago and
he delivered a message from that
church building’s roof then.
He accepted the call to pas
tor the Midway Baptist Church
in August, 1995.
Will he be preaching on the
roof again?
“You better believe I will,”
he said, “if it gets folks’ attention
who might not otherwise hear
the word.”

Reformation
By BISHOP V. T.
HARDEN
Spirit and Truth Assembly
of Jesus Ministries
Behold, I will do a new
thing. Now it shall spring forth;
Shalfyou, not know it? I will even
make a road in rivers in the
desert. Isaiah 43:19
Yes, God is doing a new
thing, a reformation. In thi?'ear
2000, the 21st century, God has
brought a reformation, a new
thing. Take a look around and
you will see that there is a refor
mation. When one thinks of ref
ormation, the mind §oes to the
years 1483-1600, of men like
John Wycliffe, Girolama
Savonarola and of course Martin
Luther. Luther was troubled by
the Church and Tetzel, and on
October 31, 1517, Luther posted
95 statements (thesis) on the
Church of Wittenberg bringing
about a reformation.
Reformation, from an aca
demic standpoint means “A
movement or belief or a religious
reform. Acts 5:28-29 Men and
women like John Wesley, Tho
mas Paul, Richard Allen, Charles
Mason, C. Seymour, Smith
Wi§glesworth, Billy Graham, T.
D. Jakes, Eddie L. Long, Mother
Gordon, Mother Sanford, David
Burris, Rev. L. D. Burdette,
Mother Jett, Rev. R. E. Henley,
Mother Tubbs, Andy Hutchens,
Overseer Dion Blackwell, Bishop
J. O. Harris, Rev. Jewell, Minis
ter Mosley, and other great men
and women of God who have
brought about reformation. But
who really started the reforma
tion? I'll tell you who - God!
Genesis 1:1 God said let there be
and from nothing came every
thing. Why? Because God said,
let there be! Jesus, the Savior of
the world, God’s only befgotten
Son, brought about a reforma
tion. There will always be a new
and changing world. When you
see what Gog can do, you can't
help but do what God says do.
Acts 4:20. A reformation s{ould
be done out of love. A reforma
tion should bring one to light. A
reformation should give knowl
edge. We must iet to Acts, get
into Acts and go beyond Acts.
There is a reformation here
and now and we can't stop it!
Jesus brought about reformation
I\_vfhen you asked Him into your
ife.
“I am bound by the scrip
tures and my conscience is cap
tive to the Word of God. I cannot
and will not retract anything
since it is neither safe nor right
to go against conscience. I can
not do otherwise. Here I stand,
and may God help me. Amen.”
(Martin Luther)
The year 2000 is the year for
reformation!
