Have A ‘Family Talk’

How do members in your
family talk to each other? Are Kou
aquiet family, talking only when
it's necessari'l? “Pass the butter.”
Or “Pick up the laundr*" Areyou
a talkative family, with everyone
chattering away about the latest
happenings? Some of both?
How %amily members talk to
each other directly relates to the
self-esteem of familf' members
and to the sense of be onginiand
comfort and love we feel there.
See if these five styles of commu

THE PLACATER - The per
son with this style seems to be
apologizing for everything, even
their own existence. They say
soothing things, not Lust when
they need to be said, but all the
time. They seem not to have an
opinion, only a voice that pleads
for all differences to cease.
THE BLAMER - This fler
son seems to be upset much of
the time and asks a lot of ques
tions aimed at finding out who
did what. This style of relating
puts Feople on the defensive an
usually leaves the Blamer lonely;
no one wants to be around to be
blamed.
THE COMPUTER - The
person with this style states a lot
of facts which may or may not be
related to what’s going on around
them. They are very precise and
correct and appear to be avoid

person tells a joke, talks about
another subject, or in some other
way distracts from subjects
which need to be addressed.
They appear to be avoiding vola

THE LEVELER - This style
of communicating is more hon

style, and may at times use any
or all of the other styles to some
degree. This person is not avoid

one has a different “read” on any
situation. This person makes it

to speak without fear of being
blamed or ignored.
What is your main style of
relating? Do you avoid, distract,
compute, placate or level? The
complex nature of family life is
helped when family members
level with each other in a sgirit
of tolerance and love. Healthy
families say what they mean, but
not in a mean way. Try leveling.
