Bobby L. Byars, 51, Ramsey
Road, Summerville, died Sunday
in Redmond Regional Medical
Center, Rome.
He was born Jan. 12, 1949,
in Trion, son of the late Robert
Lee Byars Sr. Mr. Byars was em
ploied with Mohawk Industries
with 32 years of service and was
a member of the Archery Team
Browning Competition.
Surviving are his widow,
Joann Byars, two sons and a
daughter-in-law, Joey and
Catherine Byars, Mobile, Ala.,
and Chris Byars, Summerville;
mother, Sylvia Byars, Summer
ville; two grandsons, Adam
Byars and A%]ex Byars; five sis
ters, Judy Sweeney, Gulf Breeze,
Fla., Sue Cannon, Rising Fawn,
Donna Brown, Menlo, Reeda
Stephenson, Lyerly, and Debbie
Bryant, Summerville.
Funeral services were held
at 1 p.m. Wednesday, from the
chapel of Mason Funeral Home
with Revs. Thurston Garrett and
Malcolm Harris officiating. In
terment was in AMI Cemetery.

Bennie Lee Cleveland, 79,
Fitzgerald, formerlg' of Chattooga
County, died Wednesday, Fe%.
23 in Life Care Center,
Fitzgerald.
Mr. Cleveland was born on
Sept. 10, 1920, in Menlo, son of
the late John William and
Nannie Sarah Searles Cleveland.
He was a retired farmer and me
chanic, a member of the church
of Christ and a veteran of World
War 11, having served in the U.S.
Navy. He was a former resident
of Chattooga County, but lived in
Fitzgerald for the past 28 years.
Sisters Venice Simonds and
Lorene Edwards and a %rand
daughter Angela Harper all died
earlier.
Survivors include his
widow, Thelma R. Cleveland;
three daughters, Frances
McCranie, Lithia Springs, Peggy
Justice, Fort White, Fla. and
Mary Ann Morris, Fort
Oglethorpe; one son, Robert
Cleveland, New E(ngypt, N.J.; two
sisters, Effie Gardner, Summer
ville and Mary Elizabeth Slayton,

William Denson, Goodwater,
Ala.; three grandchildren, Mar

Sunday at Emory Hospital, At
lanta.
Mrs. Dover was born on
Dec. 15, 1938, in Chattooga
County, daughter of the late
Samuel Edward and Julia
Victoria Williams.
She was a former employee
of Riegel Textile Corp. and
Mount Vernon Mills Inc. and a
member of the Church of God.
Surviving include her wid
ower, Jerry Harold Dover; one
son, John Benjamin Williams,
Trion; one brother, Edward D.
Williams, Martin; two grandchil
dren, Jessica Williams and
Lindsey Williams.

in Floyd County, son of the late
Sonny and Sally Weaver Floyd.

Summerville, died Friday at Oak
View Nursing and Rehabilitation
Center.
She was born July 12, 1927
in Hamilton County, Tenn.,

rie Hardy Wix. She was a Bap
tist. Her husband, Auther
Hartline died earlier.

Air Force Veteran
Dies February 27, 2000
Harold Hawkins Sr., 63,
Highland Ave., Summerville,
died Sunday at his residence.
He wasborn March 11, 1936
in Subligna, son of the late John
Alton and Nanc}z'l Josephine
Henson Hawkins. He was retired
from the United States Air Force.
After retirement from the USAF
he was an military policeman at
Dobbins Air Force Base and later
employed with the Chattooga
County School S{lstem. Hewasa
member of the Horizon Baptist
Fellowship, the Veterans Foreign
Wars (VIRN) Post 6688, where
he served as Post Commander
and Chaplain/State Commander
in 1982, a member of American
Le{;on Post 129, and a veteran
of Vietnam, a member of Trion
Lodge 160 F &AM, where he
served as Chaplain, and a mem
ber of Chattooga Shrine Club,
Yaarab Temple. A brother, J. L.
Hawkins and a sister, Sarah
Faulk, died earlier.
Surviving are Joyce Marlene
Hawkins; one son, Harold Eu
sene Hawkins Jr., Atlanta; two
aughters and son-in-laws,
Alison Jean and Herman E.
Fletcher Jr., Greenwood, S.C.
and Cassandra Jean (Sandy) and
Earl Franklin Watkins, Summer
ville; one brother, Bill Hawkins,
Cedar Bluff, Ala.; three sisters,
Mary Norris, Summerville, Vera

bara Morris, Atlanta and three
grandchildren, John Watkins,

Rome.
Miss Johnson was born on
June 30, 1938 in Chattooga
County, daughter of the late Wil
liam Chester and Nan Elrod
Johnson.
Survivors include two
brothers, Jerry C. Johnson and
Earl F. Johnson, Summerville.
Funeral services were held
at 4 p.m. Wednesday at the
chapel of the Mason Funeral
Home with the Rev. Tommy

Rome.
She was born August 31,
1918, in Commerce, the daugh
ter of the late Custer Lee and Lula
Dell Sailers Strickland. She was
a homemaker and a member of
the Crawford Baptist Church.
Surviving are her widower,
Otis P. Kitchens; two sons, Rich
ard Kitchens and Perry Kitchens,
both of Trion; one sister, Mary
Pett{?ohn, Summerville; two
brothers, L. C. Strickland,
Cincinnatti, Ohio and Jerry
Strickland, Griffin.

Douglas R. Scoggins, 77, a
resident of Hazel Parig, Mich. for
over 40 years, died Friday, Feb.
11, at William Beaumont Hospi
tal, Royal Oak, Mich. He was
born May 22, 1922 in Lindale.
He retired in 1977 from the
U.S. Postal Service. He was also
a minister known in the Detroit
Metro area as a “prayer warrior”
and Bible Teacher in the Church
of God.
Surviving are his wife, Vio
let, Hazel Park; a son, Stanle
Scoggins, Florida; siblinfis, Frecf:
Summerville and Russell, Trion,
and several nieces and nephews,
Summerville and Trion area and
two nieces and a nephew,
Florida.
Funeral services were held
at 11 a.m. Feb. 15 at the Cathe
dral of Praise Church of God lo
cated in Troy, Mich. with the
Rev. L. Surgener officiating. In
terment was in White Chapel
Cemetery, Troy.

at Floyd Medical Center.
He was born Aui. 22, 1971
in Ft. Ofletho?e, the son of
Walter James Sills and Betty
Moore Sills. He was a Baptist.
His firandparents, Walter and
Mpyrtle Sills died earlier.
Surviving are his wife,
Marie Sills, two daughters, Ash
ley and Heather Sills, Trion; two
sons, Preston and Dalton Sills,
Trion; father, Walter Sills,
Menlo; mother, Bettly Sills,

Oglethorpe hospital.
Rev. Woods, a native of
Chattooga County, was born on
Oct. 26, 1912 to the late James
Jefferson and Beulah Carroll
Woods. He was a Bz&?t minis
ter and retired from Georgia Rug
Mill. His brother, Homer M.
Woods died earlier.
