The miniKtcr and the boy j
Many yours afro, a certain minister was \
going one Sunday morning to bis school- ,
room. lie walked through a number of
streets, and, a? he turned a corner, he -saw
assembled around a pump a party of little j
boys, playing marbles. <>n seeing him np
proaeh they began to pick up their marbles !
and run away ns last as they could. One :
little fellow, not having seen him as soon us ;
the rest, before he could succeed in gather-"'*
ing up his marbles the minister had come
close to him and placed his hand upon liis j
shoulder. They were face to face, the min-!
ister of God and the poor little ragged boy, i
who had been caught in the act ot playing
marbles on Sunday morning. And how
did the minister deal with the hoy '! That
is what I wanted you to notice.
Tie might have said to him, ‘What are
you doing there? You are breaking the
Sabbath. Don’t you deserve to be punish
ed ?’
Hut he did nothing of the kind, lie
simply said, ‘Have you found all your mar
bles V
‘No,’ said tire hoy, ‘1 haven’t.’
‘Then,’said lies minister,‘l'll help you.
Whereupon lie knelt down and began to
look for the marbles; and as he did so, he
remarked I liked to play at marbles when I
was a little boy, very much and l think 1
can beat you but,’ he added, ‘1 never play i
marbles on Sunday.’
The little boy’s attention was now arrest,-,
cd. He liked liis lriend’s face, and began
to wonder who lie was. The minister
said :
‘l’ m going to a place where I think you
would like to be ; will you conic with mo ?
Said the boy, ‘where do you live V
‘ln such 1 and such a place/ was the an
swer.
‘Why, that’s the minister’s house !’ ex
claimed the boy, as lie did not suppose that
a kind man and a mini-tcr of the Gospel
could he the same person
‘Yes,’ said the man,’ ‘1 am the minister
myself; and if you’ll come with me, I
think i can do you some good,’
Said the boy, ‘My hands are dirty, 1 cant
g°-’
‘But/ said the minister, ‘here a a pump
—why not wash '{’
Said the boy, ‘l’m so little 1 can’t wash
and pump at the same time.’
‘Well said the minister, ‘if you’ll wash
I’ll pump.
He at once set to work, and pumped, ami
pumped, and pumped; and the boy washed
his hands and face til! they were quite
clean.
Said the boy, Oly hands are wringing
wet, and I don’t know how to dry ’em’
The minister pulled out a clean packet
handkerchief and offered it to the bey.
Said the boy, ‘but its clean.’
“Yes/ was the reply, ‘but it was made to
be dirtied.’
The boy dried liis hands and face with
the handkerchief and then accompanied
the minister to the floor of the Sunday
school.
