11 a i.soao agents say the cost of travel,
for emigrants, from points in Texas and
Arkansas to Georgia is much less than
that from (ieorg'a to Toxas. But the
trouble is the emigrants spend all they
have to get to Texas and Arkansas, and
have no means le<’t of getting back.
A New Yolk shop keeper says that
lota of women are caught stealing, but
are not arrested. They are generally re
spectable women who have running ac
counts at the stores. The articles they
steal charged in the bill, at an extra
price, which is always paid without a
murmur.

persons have been released from the

A woman recently preferred to go back
to an insane asylum rather than go

of a seal ski-. sacque. Most women will

Chicago authorities are proposing an
increase of the police of the city from 400
to 500 men and raising the additional
expense by adding SIOO to each saloon
license. The chairman of the commit
tee on police of the common council
Bays that nine-tenths of the increase in
crime of the last few years is traceable
dire tiy to the liquor traffic; and he
argues that the cause which renders ad
ditional police protection necessary
should bear the burden it entails.
In the trial of a dog case before a
New York police court a few days ago,
the lawyer defending the owner of the
animal which had bitten a little boy, ad
vanced the plea that his client should
not beheld accountable, as the dog had
never bitten any one before. Justice
White remarked that a delusi on of that
kind had cost him considerrblo money.
A dog he once owned bit a boy, and the
lad s father procured a judgment for
SIOOO damages. This was the animal’s
first offense, and by the advice of coun
sel, Juslxe White appealed the ease,
which was finally decided in favor of the
plaintiff. In the meantime the costs,
etc., bad increased the original judg
ment to $5301).
1 dry have heard of the Georgia Ses
qui-Centennial way out in Texas. The
Austin Slateman says of it: “The Geor
gia about which so
much is said just now, will be celebrated
at Savannah on the 12th of February
next. It is the one hundred and li tieth
anniversary of the first English sviile
ment in the old colony. General James
Oglethrope was the man most promi
nenly connected with that settlement,
and with him it was a labor of love. His
idea was to open a place of
re.nge for poor debtors from
England and give them an oppor
tunity to recover their fortunes
and standing, and also to aid persons
persecuted for religious belief on the
continent of Europe. It was for these
purposes that Oglethrope secured a I
charter from King George 11., i n June, I
Lo 2, for the country lying between Sa- |
vannah and Altamaha and westward to i
the Pacific. The British Parliament also
appropriated £IO,OOO for the colony, and
it started prosperously.” There are
numbers of Georgians in Texas, and
they could not do better than improve
the opportunity to revisit the old com
monwealth.
Senatok Plumb wants the two cents

The explosion of a mine which kills
100 people is a terrible calamity ; but
every year millions die <>t consumption.
Typhoid fever is more fatal than any
war ever wager. More people are killed
by falling down stairs, off of roofs and
out of windows than by railroad acci
dents. The scarlet fever and diphtheria
carry off innre victims than jbiirning
‘ school-houses or church panics. Deaths
| from drowning while swimming in the
I summer or skating in the winter far ex
ceed the deaths by steamboat explo
sion, fire and collision. Official statis
tics show that during the week ending
December 16 no fewer than 637 persons
died in London from diseases of the res
piratory organs, “under the influence
of the almost continuous fog.” And on
December 20 the Pull Mall Gazette said :
“It is quite possible, judging from past
experience, that to-day’s fog msy cost
as many lives asTel-el-Kebir, and that
the fogs of December may be fatal to as
many subjects of the Queen as the whloe
of the Egyptian campaign.”
No one can reasonably believe in a
lack of variety in human nature. On
' New Year’s nine young men fell into the
water and were nearly drowned at King
ston, New York, while attempting to
rescue a young girl. Ono of them sus
tained her in the water t wenty minutes
The efforts to rescue the party were un
successful until ropes and boards were
procured. On the other hand, five boys
broke through the ice near Boston and
a you«g man named Bond, having res
cued two, tried to pull the others out.
A teamster driving by came down to
tiie river bank and looked on. Bond
felt the ice cracking under him, and
begged the man to seize his legs and
help drag the boys out. The fellow re
plied that he had a long distance to
drive, and was afraid he might get his
clothes wet. Just then the ice broke,
and Bone fell into the water. The team
ster looked on for a few minutes longer,
and then resumed his journey. Bond
was rescued by othsrs, who arrived too
late to save the lives of the boys. Some
men are born heroes; some poltroons
and cowards.
Whin the bill to extend the South
Washington Railway was about to pass,
a man in his shirt sleeves, without anv
collar, with a towel round his neck, and
half his whiskers gone, rushed down the
aisles of the House of Representatives
and protested against the amendment.
Another man in a white apron came
along afterwards and put his coat on tor
him, but without further changes in his
apparel he made his speech and defeat
ed the amendment. It was Mr. Neal,
Chairman of the District of Columbia
Committee, who was in the barber’s
chair when he heard the amendment
proposed and rushed out to prevent it.
Os rhursday of last week a young
man named Reeder Moore, of Water
ford, Pa., shot himself because he was
bejected by Miss Patterson, of that
town. The young woman went to the
bedside of the wounded man and told
him that although she loved another,
she would marry him if he recovered.
Fortunately for the girl, Reeder died,
for upon being informed he could not
live, he confessed having committed a
terrible crime some years before, for
which an innocent man is now serving
out a term of 20 years in the Penitentia
ry, sent there by the sworn testimony of
the guilty suicide.
