nine PUP 18 enrolled; school well
Lsed aud apparently well governed.

the hill city.
No high grade school in North
A Georgia is, in my opinion, better sup-
W died in the ability and experience than
T, inU el Hill, a beautiful city located
the W A R. R . seven innes from
Dalton), with W. T. Irvine senior and
principal, and G. C. Ingram assoc.ate.
These teachers have been uniformly
successful wherever they have been
pmraged They need no introduction,
or words of commendation to the peo
ple Prof. Irvine is justly entittled to
senatorial “honors,” having represent
ed Chattooga county, in that capacity
several terms. This school has en
rolled 101 pupils; attendance very
oo d The school is systematically
graded, discipline good, success in
sured Tunnel Hill has just cause to
be proud of her able teachers and her
advancing boys and girls.
Leaving Tunnel Hill at 4 p. m.,
drove over to N. G. Hendesson’s (near
Trickum, five and a half miles from
B the Hill City, and eight miles from
F Dalton), where I received that welcome
attention characteristic of that suc
cessful farmer and his noble wife and
family. .
The Trickum Academy, is eight
miles west of Dafton. Miss Kate
Deck is teaching at Trickum, in the
Dogwood Valley. This school is ex
ceedingly well arranged, twenty-six
sprightly children, together with a
nice class of young people. Miss
Kate is doing good work, patrons well
pleased. The Trickum Academy is a
splendid building, beautifully located
and surrounded by an intelligent and
well to do people, and ought to be one
of the great central educational
points of the county. A bright future
is predicted for the rising generation
of this place. Messrs Alford, Hender
son, and Thompson, the school di
rectors, are giving their strict atten
tion to the school.
Mrs. 0. M. Bice, is teaching her
fourth year at Houston, eleven miles
F west of Dalton. This is a small
school; owing to the geography at this
section the children have been cut off
by the rains and severity of the win
ter. Mrs. Bice is an excellent teacher
—her children are good, obedient, and
always apparently happy in the pres
ence of the teacher.
Miss Lula E. Freeman, is doing
well at the Callaway Academy has
thirty-nine pupils on roll, well classi
fied, with bright prospects a head.
Miss Lula is well qualified, having a
broad understanding of the underly
ing principles of education, having
had the benefit of good Normal train
ing, and possesed of inherent tact,
is a sufficient reason why she is suc
cessful and happy in her work. This
school is located in the same Valley,
seven miles from Dalton. The hour
hand points to 4 p. in., I pass on
F through rain and mud, reaching the
splendid home of Mr. J. H. Moore,
where I was received and found all
needed attention by the good sub
stantial and well to do citizen of our
county; he together with his clever
wife and bright sons and daugnters
made the hours pass most pleasantly.
Prof. D. e P. Lee, a young man of
Chattooga county, is teaching at Sa
lem Academy, situated in the same
Valley, near the Gordoncounty line,
thirteen miles from Dalton ; 52 pupils
on roll; prompt attendance, bright
children together with the largest
class of ambitious and progressive
young men and ladies above the
school age to be found in any of the
schools of the county. Mr. Lee is a
good teacher and will build up a good
school anywhere, he is a young man
of broad and accurate scholarship, he
comes from a good teaching lineage
l and has the advantages of good nor-
B jnal training and experience in teach
ing, hence he is happy and successful
in his calling, his firmness, kindness
and diligence will in every case, re
sult in success.
Boyd T. Cantrell, a young man from
Everett Springs, Gordon county, is
teaching a prosperous school at Mill
t reek, about seven miles from Dalton,
byway of Dug Gap road across Rocky
Face mountain. Mr. Cantrell a;-
pears to be the right teacher for the
place; patrons are well pleased with
'lr. Cantrell’s management; has forty
seven pupils enrolled ; we are pleased
to find here also quite a number of
pupils continuing in school above
school age; our prospects for raising
up a better qualified class of men and
"omen for future citizenship than we
uld folks have been are encouraging.

TILTON TICKS.
PerMonal Poliiln About People You
. Know.
Tilton, Ga., March 2.—Farmers are
recovering from their dampened state
of the past few weeks, and are making
courageous efforts to prepare their
land and be ready to plant “King Cot
ton” in due season.
The ear'y spring weather has come,
and the birds are making this glowing
old earth sing with their beautiful
music.
Tilton has been in winter quarters,
but with the return of spring comes
new hope and better prospects.
We learn that the Connasauga Lum
ber plant will locate on the river at
Tilton soon. No definite arrange
ments have been made, but we earn
estly solicit them to come. Further
more, our water facilities would estab
lish at least a half dozen progressive
industries. There seems to be a lack
of confidence in our people to take
this matter in hand.
Mr. Bass Hogan spent Saturday in
Murray.
John Collins spent a few days with
