Red Clay, January 10.—Our people
have hardly caught up to a condition of
their former selves, on account of
lost sleep, “decent dissipation, etc., are
all referable to the holidays just passed.
No doubt, many of them have found that
they cannot violate a law of nature with
out punishment following. But the
laws of man can be, and are very fre
quently violated, and no punishment
follows. A man, or something shaped
like a man, can stand on a public thor
oughfare and curse vile oaths, and in
dulge in base vulgarity, and after night
fait put his hand in his hip pocket and
draw from it an old pistol and make
night hideous to decent people by con
tinuous reports from it “Noble men,
who stand high in the public estimation,
can be found with a pistol in their pock
ets and a dagger in their bosoms, who
advise against such practices, and if
called upon to pass sentence upon others
found guilty of the same offences that
they themselves are guilty of, would
show no mercy, except to the extent of
the law, in its most vigorous application.
That this has been done in thousands of
cases, is surely most true. How must a
juryman feel in rendering a verdict
against a fellow man when he is guilty
of the same thing? The only difference
between him and the accused being, that
the accused has been caught and he has
not been.
It is believed by many ripe judges of
human nature, that there are but two
classes of men, and that these two classes
consist of the caught and the uncaught
class, and this would leave the uncaught
class to be very largely in the majority,
anti makes it obligatory under the rules
of our legal jurisprudence for the un
caught class to try and condemn the
caught class. It would look like human
nature had somewhat improved since
the time that the woman who was caught,
and was being pursued by a pretendedly
infuriated mob, when she appealed to
the Saviour, and He said: “Let him who
is guiltless throw the first stone.” Mr.
Clark in his commentary on the Bible,
J daces the mob in the thousands, and I
lave always thought what a wonderful
thing it was that there was not one in
all that bloody crowd that could throw a
stone at the woman, and it goes, as a
matter, of course, that the reason they
did not throw at her was, that every
“huff” of them were guilty of the very
same offense that they proposed to stone
her to the death for. This leads to a
conclusion quite reasonable, that it re
quires •lean hands, with untarnished
paraphernalia, to meet out a punishment
pleasing in the sight of God. So, before
we judge, let us examine ourselves and
see if we are in a condition to pass a sen
tence that will stand the test, and if we
are not in such condition, we had better
suspend. These views are somewhat an
tagonistic to our “advanced civilization”
ideas, but that don’t make them any the
less facts, and we are taught that “facts
are stubborn things.” But who is he
that dares hold up his head and cry out
“reformation” on the basis named ?
Why, he would be cried down as a
“humbug,” or “lunatic” at once. Those
whom we esteem as real simon-pure
Christians would solemnly protest, and
those whom we know as fashionable
Christians only, together with those
whom we very well know to be down
right and arrant, hypocritical church
members, would denounce us in unmeas
ured terms; aye, if possible,[consign us to
the depths of oblivion. I could pursue
this subject to great length, but desist
for fear of offense to some ; at least, to
our Cohutta correspondent, who does
not want any “theologistic arguments
from sources that do not live what they
teach.”
Tell our friend McNabb, of Dawnville,
howdy for us. We always prize his let
ters highly; also, Varnell (our Jesse);
and, in fact, all The Akgus’ correspond
ents are spicy and brilliant, except your
humble servant, Shake.—Our friends,
Win. Rose, W. D. Huunisucker, Sam
Reed, James Reed, Thomas Riins and
Thomas Thatch were in Red Clay today.
—Mrs. L. D. Hall and Miss Marie Hall
left for Atlanta today, where they will
be the guests of Will F. and Mrs. Exa
Mills, until Friday next, when thev re
turn to Red Clay.—Prof. R. A. Dean
opeued his school at Red Clay on Mon
day last, with a good attendance. Prof.
Webb also opened up his school at Co
hutta, and regards his propeets good for
a much larger attendance than he had
last year. Cohutta and Bed Clay are
proud of their schools, as they have a
right to be.—Judge Henderson Wilson
is in his usual health and spirits —Dr.
B. B Brown has recovered his health
fully, and whips me out at back gammon
frequently.—Tell “Cousiu L?nk” Barrett
that I have “a ,?row to pick with him”
when I see him again.—A Wiu? asked
THE ARGUS; DALTON. GA., SATURDAY. JANUARY 20, 1894-
me today what newspaper was the
“thunderer” in Georgia now. I told him
that the matter was divided between the
Atlanta Constitution and Journal, of At
lanta, to the North Georgia line, but
that The Argvs is the “thunderer” for
North Georgia proper, and long may she
wave. Faithfully, Shake.
The woman who works, and is tired,
will find a special help in Dr. Pierce's
Favorite Prescription. Perfectly
harmless in any condition of the fe
male system. It promotes all the nat
ural functions, and builds up,
strengthens, regulates, and cures. For
women approaching confinement,
nursing mothers, and every weak, run
down, delicate woman, it is aa invig
orating, supporting tonic that’s pecu
liarly adapted to their needs.
But it’s more than that, too. It’s
the only guaranteed remedy for all the
functional disturbances, painful dis
orders, and chronic weaknesses of
womanhood. In “female complaints”
of every kind, periodical pains, bearing
down sensations, internal inflamma
tion, and kindred ailments, if it ever
fails to benefit or cure, you have your
money back.
We believe Johnson’s Magnetic Oil
a most excellent remedy for neuralgia,
rheumatism, lame back and soreness
of every kind. $1 bottles, 50 cts.

He Tried Sam Jone’s Style.
A dispatch from Birmingham says:
Rev. Sam Jones has for several
weeks been carrying on a revival ser
vice here and his customary epithets,
“You dirtv yellow hound dog,” “You
imp of hell,”’and other such express
ions, were frequently used by the
noted evangelist in addressing his con
gregations. Parson Isaac Davidson,
who presides over a small negro
church a few miles from here, was a
regular attendant at the meetings.
He was a gr?at admirer of the Rev.
Mr. Jones’s style, and decided to cul
tivate it. Accordingly, last Sunday,
he treated his congregate >n to a new
kind of preaching, which was in
strong contrast to his former meek
and lowly talk.
“You black devils! You imps of
hell? You old sow cats!” he began.
“Kill him!” shouted a big black
brother, who sat near the front and to
whom the preacher appeared to ad
dress his remarks.
“Kill him!” was echoed through
the congregation.
The good old sisters joined in the
cry, and soon the congregation was
upon him. Finally some charitable
person suggested he was crazy and the
parson’s own wife endorsed this asser
tion. He was secured and watched
ike a maniac. He explained that he
was trying Sam Jones’ tactics on his
congregation, but they, not having
leard that exhorter, could not be con
vinced that these methods were cus
tomary, and had the parson arrested
or using “cuss words” in the pulpit.
He has not yet had his trial.
