Pulex Irritans vs. Jealously.
To the Editor of The Argus.
In the issue of The Angus of July 14th,
a squib appeared which, in its nature,
cast a reflection on the Hotel at Cohut
tah Springs. A certain young man
claims to have been hurriedly driven
from the hotel by an attack of fle s, and
in consequence of which he lost nine
teen pounds of flesh.
Now, for the real cause of his abrupt
departure, we refer you to Col. Julian
McCamy, who has the inside figures, if
he will only reveal them. His claim to
have lost so much flesh seems incredu
lous, though we have read of cases of
Alopecia, Dementia and even the loss of
life itself, resulting from an acute attack
of jealously.
Take it for granted that there is a room
of “honor” in the house, and suppose a
certain young man did occupy it (if so
he was in the wrong pew), and suppose
there were fleas in the room also. Noth
ing strange in that, for where even a
mangy cur is found, there the fleas will
invariably be gathered.
The young man had no occasion to
walk back to Dalton anyway; for, as he
is a “lightweight” at best, and after los
ing all that flesh, anybody would have
hauled him home for fifty cents; or, he
could have ridden behind “Wiley”, the
mail boy, for a quarter.

“Have tried others, but like Ayer’s
best,” is the statement made over and
over again by those who testify to the
benefit derived from the use of Ayer’s
Sarsaparilla. Disease never had a

blood-purifier. It makes the weak
strong.

VARNELL VOLAPUK.
What is Transpiring in That Live
Town and Vicinity.
Varnblls, July 24.—We had a nice
picnic Saturday; the boys played ball,
the girls croquet, the men talked crops
and politics. Matt Pitner was on hand
by a decided majority. Sam Varnell
carried off the belt as the champion ice
cream eater. Oh, if I had the gift of gab
that some of our heavy weights possess,
I could tell lots about it. Wm. Morris
and Miss Frankie Hall, of Amzi, took in
the picnic to the infinite delight of their
many friends. — *V. J. Kincannon, of
Atlanta, arrived in the city Saturday,
on a visit to relatives —Rev. P. L. Stan
ton preached for us Sunday night and
gave us two interesting lectures Monday.
—Pillow Kaneaster and family, of Cleve
land, Tenn., are visiting friends here and
at Tunnel Hill, this week.—James Hack
ney has accepted a position with the
Nashville & Chattanooga railway, and is
located in Nashville.—We have two
John Caylors; Young John is a popular
merchant in town, and J. J. Caylor, one
of the best farmers in the county, lives
one and a half miles from town. —The
following notice was found on a tree at
the Varnell spring the other morning:
“I came to this spring a strong populist;
after drinking the good water I left it a
strong democrat; go thou and do like
wise.”—As I wdl be at the Springs for
some time, I will not be able to take the
stump for Longley as I intended, but I
hope he will get there all the same. —
Rev. J. W. Gober, assisted by Rev. Clay
ton Quillian and others, commences a
protracted meeting here next Sunday
night.—W. H. Prater came down from
Chattanooga Sunday afternoon. —News
is scarce this week, only visiting, and if I
wrote too much about that, our dear
little Trickum and Tilton dotters might
think I was infringing.

Cedar Valley, July 25.—We are
still having plenty of rain, and crops
are looking very promising.—James
Tripp and wife are still out at
his father’s. They both seem to be
improving slowiy.—The protracted
meeting will commence at Grove
Level the second Sunday in August.
—The singing convention will come
off at Grove Level the fi-st Saturday
and Sunday in August. Everybody
is invited to come and take part in
the meeting. J. L. Dantzler went to
the Sunday school convention at T’l
ton last Friday. He reports having a
good time during his stay with the
brethren down there.—The farmers
will soon be done laying by their crops
for this year.
