Sumach News.
Sumach, Ga , Jan. 18.—After an una
voidable absence of i-everal weeks from
the columns of you'-valuable and much
appreciated paper, I will again try to
give some ot the news of our burg. The
Sumach High School opened the first
Monday with an unusually large atten
dance. The prospect for a large and in
teresting school is better than it has been
fora number of years. Rev. Watkins
preached an interesting ami instructive
sermon, at M< Camy’s Chapel, last Sun
day. Mr. John Isenhour and his sister,
Miss Georgia, left for Texas on the
16th. Squire John H. Lynn, of Beaver
dale, passed here a few days ago on his
way to Spring Place. He wants to get
work with the Spring Place Jimplecute.
The editor of that interesting weekly can
do no better, perhaps, than to employ
John, as he is a young man of sterling
moral worth, and has considerable expe
rience in the printing office. Miss Hassie
Brown is very ill—indeed,isnotexpected
to recover. Bill Franklin ami Andrew
Pullen were both elated on account of
the advent of anew boy apiece. H. H.
Gregory, of Hassler’s Mills, was in the
community a few days ago. J. W. Mac
key has sold his farm to Jas. W. McCamy,
and will move to Texas this fall. Our
loss in this instance is a gain to Texas
Dr. J. A. Price, of Dalton, was in the
community a few days ago on business.
Charley Adair and his sister, Mrs Pleui
ons, both of Texas, who have been visit
ing the community for several days, will
leave for borne soon. Their stay among
us lias been a pleasure to all their friends.

wrote Mr. S. M. Hysell.of Middleport,

Letter From Tennessee.
Highland Park, Tenn., Jan. 18. —An-
other week has come and gone and we
are still kicking. Our little burg is on
the upward march. Bro. J. M. Taylor
is beating himself this year. He preach
ed a powerful sermon last Sunday, and
we cau truthfully say it had its effect for
good’ The League was well attended
Sunday afternoon. Mrs. Lottie Treese, of
Hill City, led the meeting, and the Spirit
was present| with her, and we were all
blessed from having taken part in the
meeting. Miss Mamie Wells,of St. Elmo,
visited her aunt, Mrs 1). J Manning, last
week. Bro. J. W Brady is able to be out
some. He went to the city Friday of last
week and was walking about Sunday. C.
E. Williams, who has been sick a long
time, is getting better. Bro. Taylor is
working up quite an interest in the mid
week praver meeting. We bad a good
attendance and good service last Wednes
day night. Mrs M. L Miller was in to
see us Sunday. We asked her why her
“hubby” did not come along. “Well,”
she said, “h« had to stay at home and
s>lay with the baby.” Florence Rebecca

Mountain View.
Mountain View, Jan. 20.—1 n the calm
and solemn hours of meditation what an
array of thoughts are perspected on
the mind. From the days of early child
hood, when we revelled in making mud
houses and singing Old Dan Tucker, and
through all the varying scenes of life’s
voyage, we realize to-day, as never be
fore, the terrible conflict that all must
wage and victory win, before they can
I basK on the banks of sweet deliverence.
Afid let us be glad that it is so, because
in harmony with the divine plan. The
disturbing elements in a man’s soul will
either lead the downward road, or drive
him to the Rock of Eternal Ages. May
the latter result be our blessed condition,
and when life’s terrific scenes ami trials
are over, rest in sweet peace under the
shflde of trees of immortal bloom. A man
in the uaik, with his garments all soiled
and rent, is conscious of no defilement
until he stands in the presence of light.
Ho, spiritually, the soul of man without
divine illumination, fails to discover its
own defilement and need of cleansing.
Ihe nearer we approach this light of gos
pel truth the more obvious our own sins
and mistakes. May all of us, then, who
are inclined to despond on account of
numerous frailties and shortcomings, take
courage and rejoice in the fact that we
are taught a broader charity, ever re
membering that to him who overcometli
the everlasting promises are sure. We
subscribe most heartily to the sentiment
of Dr. Talmage in reference to the Chris
tian duty of all civilized governments to
wards America. As an able expounder
of the truth of God the nations of the
earth will take heed of him, or failing so
to do will reap the inevitable const qlien
ees. We like Talmage; be is right with
Cleveland on the enforcement of the
Monroe doctiine, and also in advocating
the dismemberment of Turkey and par
celling out her territory to the surround
ing nations. So mote it be. Bill Arp’s
writings are good and generally to the
point* He is so natural and homelike,
lie feel greatly revived and strengthened
from reading his letters, and believe as
he goes down the declivity of life, greater
wisdom possesses him, and so on to the
perfect day. W e have no reason to look
sulky or complain of the prospect in ami
around Mountain View. The longevity
of her inhabitants is most remarkable.
James Jewell 91, Win. Stevenson 88, Mrs.
Dantzler 90, Mr. Warmack 84, and many
others in the neighborhood of those ages,
all looking well. By the way, it was oui
pleasure to spend a portion of an evening
lately with Bro. Warmack. Notwith
standing his age, he is in good health and
very interesting m conversation. Any
one desiring to see him will find him
living at his daughter’s, Mrs. Mel Jones,
in the vicinity of Mountain View. John
Broadrick had a severe attacK of cholera
morbus recently, but is convalescent. Il
was pleasurable to meet up with Berrj
Bowen, the uuterritied, at Grove Level
last Sunday. If the inner man is on a
corresponding boom with the outer man
we most heartily congratulate him. On
the whole, however, barring a few little
irregularities, Berry is a good fellow and
should be patronized. Ail of the public
schools in this district are in successful
operation. An exceptionally fine school
is being taught at Dawnviile ly Prof.
Boyles, and also one at Forest Hill by
Miss Mary Quillian. For thoroughness
and general ability they have no superi
ors in the county. Bros. Parrott ami
Seymour likewise have good schools at
Deep Spring and Cedar Valley, and are
doing a good work. Bro. McCharies was
in this burg the other day assisting the
brethren and looking as happy as a big
sunflower. James Wilson and family
have left us and gone to Dalton to live.
By this move we lose the company of
those most excellent ami chaiming gir.s,
Bro. W ilson’s daughters. Pleasant Grove
will sorely miss them in more ways than
one. Come back, girls, when you can;
you will always find a welcome —already
some young men are inconsolable. That
was a most enjoyable meeting of the cor
respondents al Buchholz hall, on the 4th
inst. Hope the like may soon occur
again, with an additional torce represent
ing energy and ability. Bro. McNabb did
so admirablx on the occasion referred to,
that wefe.lt like he ought to have soim
office to strengthen him in his declining
age, and to make his o| port unities foi
good more apparent. What say the cor
respondents to nominating Bro. McNabb
to the office of Tax Receiver? Who
comes next? Don’t forget that we must
send A. H. ehaver to the next legislature.
When things are right, hold them steady.
Sincerely, Veritas.

men of our country, and has the most
favorable and flattering prospects ahead
of him. There will be no flash nor glare
of borrowed diamonds, nor a settlement

No trip to Europe. Their riches will

two of Cohutta’s leading citizens, were in
Red Clay yesterday.—Dr. T. 8. Hughes,
of Cohutta, was called on Thursday lust
to the bedside of the amiable Mrs. Samuel
Johnson, at Eureka, Tenn., who is labor
ing from pisthorax with malarial taxemia;
he reports her case as hopeful. Mrs
Johnson, nee Westmoreland, has a large
number of friends in this vicinity, who
are quite anxious about her condition
James B. Simmons, marshal of Cohutta,
was in Red Clay Sunday.—Rev. \\ . R.
Kennedy, of Dalton qhcuit, preached bis
first sermon at Red Clay church on Sun
day night. His text was from Psalm xxiv,
15: “Be of good courage and God will
strengthen you.” 'lhe views put forth
were forceful and well received by a large
and attentive congregation. —J. J. Kile,
one of our popular merchants, returned
home yesterday, from a visit to his fatli

L. A. Halt lost a five dollar bill last week
and is grieving over yet Money must be
plenty, when people have it to lose; yet
the loss of a "v” would pinch most any

inability which prevented our attendance
at the dotter’s banquet to Editor Shaver;
though we rejoice to know that the occa

It was a fitting tiibute to a worthy man.
W hen our county sends him to the halls
of our state legislature will be the time to
give him a “crowder,” in the way of a
merited public recognition, in which all
our people will delight to participate.

letter may give me. In Nov. and Dec., 1893,
The inmates had the “LaGrippe,”
