First Methodist.
Sunday school convened at the
usual hour last Sunday inorning with
good interest.
The pastor. Rev. T. J. Christian,
spoke earnestly to bis people at the!
morning service from 1 John 2: 1:2:
•My little cnildren. these things
write I unto you, that ye sin not. I
And if any nmusln, webaveanad-|
vocate wiH> the Father. Jesus Christ
the righteous. And he is tbepropi-l
tiation for our sins: and not for aura

whole world.”
At the evening service the pastor

Luke 19, forcibly presenting the.
strong teachings of this lesson.

First Baptist.
At the morning service, the pastor
spoke briefly on the institution, the
design, the participants and the
blessings of the Lord’s Supper. The
command of Jesus that ail believers
observe the ordinance was dwelt
upon and the excuses sometimes
made for not obeying were shown to
be groundless and flimsy.
In the afternoon, Pastor Peyton, at
the request of the Baptist church at
Tunnel Hill, went there, and. in the
presence of a large ami attentive
crowd of people, baptized nine young
people into the fellowship of that
ch u rch.
In the evening, the pulpit of the!
First church was filled by Rev. M. C.
Jackson. His theme was “The Chris
tiana’s Duty to Shine”—in the home,
in the church, in the community, in
all the world and in the hour of
death. The sermon was listened to
with marked attention.
At the morning service four were
received by letter.
A packet Os tracts on missions was
placed in every home, looking to the |
realization of the pastor’s great de
sire—the development of the grace of I
giving among his people.
Special prayer services will be held '
at the First Baptist church every
night during the coming week. The
pastor's desire is that, through these
services, the spiritual life of e the
church may be deepened. The theme
at every service will be some phase
of the work of the Holy Spirit and
the one object of prayer will be that j
his presence and power may be made
manifest. It is hoped that these
services may be uplifting to all and
for the advancement of the cause.
All invited and urged to bring Bibles.
The Lord's Supper will be observed
at the First Baptist church next Sun
day morning. The pastor’s theme
will be, “Meditating on Jesus." All
members urged to be present. The
evening subject will be: “AFunda-i
mental Baptist Doctrine.”

Episcopal Church.
Services will be held at the Epis
copal church next Sunday morning
at the usual hour. The sermon will
be by the rector. Rev. F. W. Ambler,
after which will be the celebration of
the Holy Communion. The rector
also desires to meet all the ladies of
the congregation at the church to
morrow (Saturday) afternoon at four
o’clock.

Epworth League.
The Epworth League met Friday
night at the Methodist church
for the regular monthly business
meeting. In connection with their
literary and devotional services the
young lady members have organized
a sewing circle. Once a week they
meet to sew for the little girl at the
Decatur Home, whom they are cloth
ing, and a paper of local League news
is also edited which is an interesting
feature of these meetings.
The meeting last Friday night was
well attended and the usual routine
of business was transacted.

Baptist Young People’s Union
The members of the B. Y. P. U. of
the First Baptist church spent a
most profitable hour last Sunday eve
ning in the study of the lesson on “A
Searching Question” —“Lovest thou
me more than these?”
The meeting was conducted by
Miss Bessie Jackson and a large num
ber of the members took part in the
scripture readings. The regular
monthly business meeting was post
poned until next Sunday evening,
when a full attendance is desired.
Mrs. F. F. Farrar will conduct the
meeting next Sunday evening and
the topic will be “Fruitful or Fruit
less.”
The hour of the meeting of the
Junior union has been changed to
four o’clock and an interesting lesson
will be presented bj T Miss Rosa
Copeland next Sunday afternoon.

of Christ.”

tions for which were published last

An Unchangeable Saviour.
He is “the same yesterday, today
land foiever.” How sweet the
I thought! We set our affections on
an earthly object, and how short it
lasts; but we turn our eyes to the
Son of God and remember that he is
unchanging—the past, the present,
the future—always the same.
Look briefly into this comforting
truth. Jesus is the same in his na
ture. We change every day; our
bodies grow feeble, steps totter and
hairs turn gray; but Jesus is always
the same, his strength unabated, his
sight undimmed.
He is the same in his purposes and !
plans. We are creatures of circum
stances. We make plans, but we
cannot say today what we will do to- 1
morrow. Not so with Jesus. He
sees the end from the beginning, and I
his purposesand plans need no alter
ation. He is the same in hie ability
to carry out his plans. “He is able
to save unto the uttermost all who
come unto God by hitn.”
He is unchangeable in his feelings.
If he ever loved you, he loves you
now and will loveyou always. “Hav
ing loved his own, he loved them
unto the end.” Friends may desert
us, loved ones may turn coldlj’ away,
but Jesus is ever the same. It is to
the credit of a man to be able
to say of him, “I know where to find
him. He is notone thing today and
another thing tomorrow.” But this
high commendation is true in the
highest sense only of Jesus. Here is
rich encouragement. Our natures
change; our plans come to naught;
burdens of life are laid upon us.
Here are loving words to cheer us,
and here is a strong arm on which to
lean. “Jesus is the same yesterday,
today and forever.” Make him your
trust and storms cannot move!

STRANGE ROBBERS.
Mystery on an Ocean Liner Explained
At Last.
Not many weeks ago the newspa
pers published accounts of mysteri
ous wholesale robberies on one of the
ocean greyhounds plying between
New York and Liverpool. The au
thorities on board ship exerted them
selves to the utmost, but no clue to
the offenders could be obtained.
State room after state room was en
tered. and in nearly every case some
valuable jewels were abstracted.
Scotland Yard detectives were sum-
moned. but the most astute thief
catchers of that celebrated agency
failed to meet with any success.
Later developments, however,have
thrown some lighten the mystery.
On board, and receiving the constant
attention of a lady and gentleman
passenger, was a fine large group of
ostriches, consigned to J. H. Perci
val of Paris, France. The lady and
gentleman, it seems, after the steam
er landed disappeared, as did also
the flock of feathered beauties. All
trace of the birds was lost until the
other day. when they were unloaded
at the Plant System dock. The tag,
however, had been changed and one
of the birds was missing.
It turned out to be a most valuable
bird, and the discovery was the work
of a New York sleuth hound. On
every visit to the hold of the steamer
by the aforesaid lady and gentleman
this particular ostrich was fed a
jewel, watch, diamond ring or some
other valuable article —purloined by
this couple from the state rooms of
their fellow passengers. This par
ticular ostrich seemed to feast on
jewelry.
• Be that as it may, the bird’s feath
ers now adorn some Parisian, and !
the contents of his stomach await)
identification in the office of Chief!
Devery in New York City. The lady
and gentleman are in the bauds of
the Paris police, who arrested them
as they were about to sail for Amer
ica, after having reshipped the ost
rich to New York.
Having no reason to detain the
birds, and as the real culprit had
been sacrificed on the other side, the
society for the prevention of cruelty
to animals sold them to the agent of
the great John Robinson Circus,
which will exhibit in Dalton, Satur
day, October 18.
