“ Barcelona, 3d April, 1799.
“ I left Leghorn on the 2 [th
March, when (he French were
hourly expelled in that city.
The Englifh were leaving it in
ha fie and the Americans had
all hauled their veflels out of (hot
of die (bore, and 1 have not the
lead doubt that not long ere this
the French arc in that city.
This information w ill be very
intercfling tolhe citizens of the
United States, as it is uncertain
what will be the condutl of the
French with refpeft to Ameri
can velfels ; for my oart I would
advife all mailers not to proceed
to Leghorn, till they have fur
ther information from that place,

Capt. Connolly failed from the
Havannah on the 29th of May ;
the next day he was captured by
(ho Aoi k and another Britifh
Ligate, part of a fleet of 10 fail
which were cruifingofF the Ha
vannah, which, after taking out
all the crew of the Lucy, except
cant. Connolly, his fecond mate
and carpenter, a fmall boy who
was Tick, and one pdfenger, put
a lieutenant of the York frigate,
as prize-maflcr, and twelve fea
men cn hoard, and oideredhcr
for Jamaica; but on Fiiday night
lalL when corning through the
Gulpb, capt. Connolly, affiflcd
by his fecond male and carpen
ter, made an attempt to take
pofftflion of his fhip,-by knock
ing down thole who were on
deck, and feruring the others
below, and lucceeded; when
capt. Connolly made the at
tempt, there were ten of the
feamen on deck. The lieute
nant ol the fligate and capt.
Connolly's palfcnger were below
nlleep, and did not know that
he was mailer of his vellel until
the next morning, when he had I
altered her courfe for this port. \
Mr. Daniel O'Hara, of this
f“V, who was on boaid of the
Hup at the time of the capture,
was taken on board of the Yoik
frigate, and it is fuppofed is
carried to Jamaica,.

The fecond mate of the Lucy,
who, with the carpenter, fo fpi
liiedly alhfled capt. Connolly,
in the recovery of his vcffel,
from the lieutenant and 12 men
put on board, Loin the Englifh
frigate York, and ordered for
Jamaica, is Mr. John Smith,
nephew of the Right Reverend
Rilhop Smith, a Charleflon
youth, lately appointed a lieu
tenant in the American navy.

On Sunday lafl arrived the
fchooner Amazon, capt. Arnold,
17 days from Jamaica. On the
14th infl. was boarded off St.
Augufline by the Britifh Hoop
of war Swallow, who informed
him that the Maidflone Ligate,
of 36 guns, had fallen in with
a United States armed brig, off
the Havannah ; the captain of
the Ligate fern an odiccr an
board the brig to take out forne
of her men, when the captain of
the brig not being able to defend
him (elf, (and agreeable to his
orders) gave up bis vcffel; the
captain of the frigate took charge
of her, and lent her for Jamaica.
Capt. Arnold left Jamaica, in
company with 15 fail of Ame
rican veflels, under convoy of
the Grand Turke of Bofton,
capt. Taber. Off the Com
mayndes, capt. Taber was board
ed by an Englifh floop of war,
who took nine of his men, the
greater part of the remainder
being hek rendered his guns
ufelcfs. Off Cape Antonio, the
fleet was parted by a gale of
wind. Only, one vcfLi being
in company with the convoy,
fbe was taken off the Havannah
by two french privateers; a
fchooner in company got clear
while they were taking poffelhon
of her,

Maidflone frigate, was notin the
lervice of the United States, but
vve arc m ormed by capt, Tounge
from Jamaica, that (he was the

Stanwood, of Lew-York; that
they failed in company on their
outward bound patfage, and ar
rived fafe at Jamaica, Capt.
Tounge on his paffage from Ja
maica to this port fell in with
the fchooner Betfey, capt. Gage,
of Barnflable, who had on board
( gunner of the fnow and two

Gage’s men in exchange, all
