The following is extrafted fiom a pamphlet now in the rref, entitled “ I ighi end Truth*’ &c. This portion of the work relates to the interview between the prcfident and the gentleman who prefented the petitions from Vermont, in behalf of col. Lyon, then fuffering under the fedition ach “ The petitions of the people of the weftern diftnft of Ver mont, were delivered to the pre fident in three parcels. The fiift accompanied by alerter from colonel Lyon's Ton, which was faid from thofe around the pre fident to be * a decent letter." It was a very excellent letter ; fuch an cne as every man of ge nerous fentiments would ap prove ; fuch an one as every go'd man would treat with great deference, 1 liefe petitions and this letter prepared prefident Adams to expert more. Such were hand ed bv an epifcopal clergyman, on Monday forenoon, the 3ill day of December, 1798. This meffenger received many of them on Lis way fronfl Vcrgennes, from the hands of thofe to whom they weie committed for the purpofe. ft befe were accompanied with the tnoft fmcere expreflions of regard for their reprefentaiive, and wifhes that they might be followed by a favorable anfwer. Previous to attending upon the prefident, Mr. Pickering, the leneiary of ftate, was waited upon and info med of the errand of the mederger, who requefted Mr. Pickering to attend him to the p ehdent. Mr. Pickering afked if colonel Lyon had pe titioned, laid that the prefident had mfoimed him that petitions h 'd already arrived, and anfwer that it was not neceflary for him to introduce the meflenger, as le ptefident knew him as We *‘ as he did. The prefident received them and afked if co lonel Lvon had periiioned. ft o this he was anfwered that he had not : that colonel I yon faid, he had pled not guilty to the indift ment—that he was condemned for pa t of a letter wrote in his own defence, previous to the pafhng of the fedition law, and for reading the copy of a Ic tter, which others had printed, and no notice been taken of them. “ ft he prefident remarked, that repentance ought to precede n.ercy; and was anlwered that forgtvenef was the darling attribute of the great Supreme. The pre fident obferved that he had ever been unmoved at what co lonel Lyon hud Lid or done, with refpeft to himfelf, Ihe meflenger rep'bd “ I wifti fir, that all had followed, the mag nanimous examnle of yomlelf and general Wafbington, in tak ing no notice of aflaults; we (hould then have had lefs trou ble concerning peftonal alterca tions." At thisrema k, he eyed the meflenger veiy irq ifinvely. •• The prefident afked whe ther colonel I yon was re-eb bb d, and was told in the affirmative, and that it w'as reported by a majority of eight or nine hun dred. ft he prefident enquiied how many had petitioned, and was informed that the meflenger could not tell, as he had not Teen the efiimate of the whole. He then remarked, that it w r as eafy to obtain petitions in any cafes r f pet Tons who were con demned : and was anfwered, * 1 believe fir, there was no undue management on this oc cafion ” “ The prefident Paid he w'ould lay the bufinefs before the fro- \ per per/ons , and rake fuch mea fares as were though' to be nc ceffan—And then mrnmg to the meftergtr, further added, “ and as to youfelf your vter ference on the part of colonel Lyon will prevent your receivin any favors from me."
