purpose to si-eak at present, but to re
cord bis last great light, where Pat
proved himself a very Gatling cun of
uvatli to his implacable fo r. Pat is
well remembered as an ohl-tiuie Fort
Siil freighter, and at the time of his
tragical death was on his wav from
Caldwell. Kan., to the fort with six
wagons and three tial wagons. With
him were three men One of these a
tenderfoot from Boston, hadj^feeat de
sire to. MU an Indian. JomMiorison
was his name. Ho little knew how soon
lie would g t more killmy than h«

dom equalled in Lord r tragedies.
O e xfternoou shortly after tliey had
gone into ramp, they were attacked by
a bund of 3U0 or 400 Cheyenne braves
with *11 the suddenness and terrible le-
roeity peculiar t-i Indian warfare. Hen
nessey saw them coming und instantly
ordered the men to run for a canon just
west of ti e trai 1 . They misunderstood
t>.e direction,, an t inst ad of the west
took the trail north. The mistake hast
ened their doom. VVitli wild yells of
savage delight, the Indians circled
Ko ison was
leftlH-hind in tho race. He saw Indians
o.i every side. No chance of escape,
was over.
With a ra
pidity that indicated a previous train
ing lie raised his Winchester and fired
into the Iiali-ns aitii shots so quick
they almost seemed one Deadly shoot
ing. too, for five painted warriors ha 1
gone down, their death ciy ringing out
and mingling with the dog-like snarls
of several that were wounded. The In
dians returned the fire and the three
white men fc 1.
O d Pat saw the fight from his retreat
in the rorks. lli s mind had undergone
:i great change in regard to tlie man
from Boston, and as the savages rushed
in to seal}) the tliree fallen tnei , is own
deadly Winchester canto to h.s shoul
der, the sights caught tin* dusky form
of a big Indian just in tlie act of scalp
ing Korison. The rifle belched forth its
messenger of death, and a r- d fiend
sprang high in the air, then sank down,
stili aud dead. It was net that fiend of
tlie plains, Black Scar, but another
fed skin, who, rushing forward to try
for the scalp of Korison, met his own
well-deserved fate from tlie sure aim ef
Pat. With yells of fury the Indians
left the three prostrate forms to attack
then more formidable enemy, and from
t e belts of three bucks there dangled
tlie scalps of three whites.
Hcnnossy was well prepared for de
fence—an immense rock behind, rocks
at tlie sides and in front also, which
was the only point at which an attack
eon d bo made, and there over the rock
gleamed wit - deadly menace the six
teen shot Winchester. Swift now and
iiot the fire. Over i$00 against one, but
that one coo'.determined, and desperate
— a host in himself. Iuto the advancing
horde go rifle balls on.errands of death,
killing and wounding as they tear
through the red ranks. With insane
courage the savages rush up within ten
yards of t ho rock. Pat no longer sights
Ids gun; he rest it on a rock, cocks it
with one hand and pulls the lever and
trigger with the other, and point blank
iiit * the red devils he sends an almost
continuous stream of leaden balls.
They waver, break, ^retreat, but only
for a moment
The chief has been killed, but Black
Scar takes command, waves aloft the
scalp of Korison, ptuuts to the dead
braves, calls for vengeance, and orders
the fight to be renewed. This time the
attack is made in front and at both
des. If tliey can scale tlie rocks at tlie
les, Pat will be at their mercy From
the death-dealing point in front, tlie
good old Winche»ter again pours forth
s terrible destruction, and at the loud
command of Black Scar tliey surge
round in front, face to face with their
desperate foe. Pat’s revolver, a self-
cocker, does deadly work, fired iuto tlie
yelling mass ten feet away. The last
load gone, and again the Winchester, at
close range, covers the ground with
dead and dying. The red monsters are
forced hack fro** that denth-vomitling
rock—back from a single gun, back
rom a single man, back from brave l’at
Hennessy!
In a few moments the whole band
would have fled, when suddenly the
firing ceased. Pat’s gun had become so
dirty and hot by constant firing that,
horrible to relate, while attempting to
put in a cartridge,! (.stuck fast, and could
not be forced cither in or out. The In-
ians supposed he was out of ammuni
tion, and, with savage yells, rushed in
to seeurc their prize. Pat met them
with clubbed gun, and broken beads and
bones were plentiful as they came with
in sweep of his strong arms in the death
struggle. But those behind still pressed
on, aud lie was soon overpowered and
ecured. Infuriated at the loss of so
many of iheir number, they took poor
Pat, tore his scalp from his head, bound
him to one of his .own wagon wheels,
emptied sacks of oats around him, and
set them on fire. Just as they com
menced their devilish torture and dance
around their victim, they heard a shot
echo from the distance. The alarm was
raised that the soldiors were coming,
ind the stampede at once began. Pick
ing it}) the wounded and some of the
dead, tlie Indians mounted their horses
and scampered off.
There he was buried the next day by
some other freighters The bodies of
thirty dead Indians were also found.—

Quincy Bobiaon related an incident
ofiiic early history of the oil region*
recently, which may give the* children
•if the present generation a vague idea
of the magnitude of tlie transactions
which look place when oil was $3 and
$9 a barrel, am} poor people gxiued a
competency by scooping it off the sur
face of creeks, or gathered it from pools
around the tanks which had overflow
ed. The story as told by Mr. Bobiaon
was as follows:
‘•Within a month after Col. Drake
hadd struck the first petroleum ever
brought to the surface in America by
means of drilling, my (ather
and the here bought a
tract of land comprising 1,230 acres, ad
joining the farm on which tlie Drake
well was located, for $350,000. Not
long afterward I was sitting in their
otHcc one day—I remember it as dis
tinctly as t' ougli it liappeneil only yes
terday—when an agent for an eastern
syndicate walked in and offered $500,-
000 for the 1.230 acres. The owners
looked at him rather incredulously for
a moment, but befor* they could speak
lie had counted out on the table $500,-
0(H) in cash aud drafts, which he offered
for a deed of the tract. I was appalled
by the sight of the pile, but my father
aiid the father of these gentlemen retir
ed for consultation, and decided that if
the property was worth $500,000 it was
worth $1.0(>0.000. aud the offer was re-,
fused. Their heirs still own the land
and now it is valued at about $20,000.
When they could have got dollar* we
scare dy could get nickels. Thus you
can see what seemingly fairy stories
could be told of those days. They are
almost incomprehensible to the present
generation, but they were red-hot
fac s.” And a sign of regret that the
offer had not been accepted went
around the circle.

Interrogated by tlie doctor, he an
