NEOROES AND COLORED PEOPLE.
We eee that the pree* of the coun
try baa at laeC drawn a descriptive
difference between the descendants
ol the African in the South—and a
▼cry correct one it is, too. The
blacks are spoken of as “Negroes”
which they undoubtedly are—while
the mulattoes are described as "col
ored people.’’ Neither black or white
are colors, but yellow assuredly is
There would be just ae much sense
in specking of a white man
"colored person,” as thus describing
tbe negro. Negro is as rightfully
the title of the African, as is Cau
casian that of the whits man. He is
ao designated in a classification of
tbe bnman family. The mulattoes
area mongrel race, and can mos
properly be described as " colored,’*
and should be so classed. There is
no more reproach in the word Negro
than there is in Caucasian, Mongo
lian, or any other descriptive term to
classify the people of the earth. It
is said the word originated from the
river Niger, on which the African
was first found, and was afterwards
corrupted into nigger. But it mat
ters not how they came by the name.
Negro is as indellible a fixture on
these people as is the hue of their
akin, and will ao remain ae long as
history endures.
It is very foolish for tbe negro to
resent bis classification, and insist
on being called •* color ad,” a classi
fication as nonsensical as it is mean
ingless. It rests with the blacks^of
the South to cither elevate or lower
their classification—by their devel
opment they can either make the
word Negro one of credit or re
proach. If they so deport themselves
as become good and law-abiding
citizens, " Negro” will be synony
mous of honor and respectability—if
they choose to relapse into barbarism
and become tbe off-scouring of the
land tney inhabit, whatever term
describes them will come into con
tempt and reproach, lt is not the
name that entails respect and credit
upon a race, .but it is left with the
race to elevate or lower the name.
The classification of Negroes and
mulattoes, as drawn by tbe press, is
a most proper one, and there should
now be a friendly rivalry between
the genuine Negro and the colored
people to see which class can do moat
toward elevating themselves, and
thus bringing their name into credit*
punishment of crime—by following
the commands of God, transgress
sions would be unknown.
So far from tbe preaa of this day |
being denounced from tbe pulpit, it I
seems to ns that ministers of the ]
Gospel should welcome the publics- |
lion of what they term disgraceful
disclosures of crime as an endorse-1
ment of the Divine Book, and take j
advantage of such publications -to
point out the prophetic truths of the |
Bible. We are bitterly opposed to!
degrading our columns by a publica
tion of obscene disclosures calcula
ted to feed the appetite and fire the j
passions of the depraved ; but a sim
ple publication of tbe sios of the day
and the attendant consequences and
punishment, seems to ns a lesson I
worthy of carefol study, and will act
as a warning to many readers. There
is not a crime committed bot shows |
the troth of the Scriptural declare
tion that “the way of the tranagres-1
sor is hard.”

~ BAD BLOOD WITHIN THE RACE.
Dr. Blydon, an educated negro,
baa written an article in the Charles
ton News A Courier, advocating a
separation of the negroes and mulat
toes—sending the former back to
Africa and the latter to Hayti, Cuba
or Oklahoma. He argues that the
"colored psople,” or mulattoes, are
more at home in America, jrhilo the
Dark Continent is the ancestral do
main of the black man.
There is no doubt but that there
is much secret jealousy between the
full-blooded African and the mixed
breed in the South, and it is crys-
taliziog more and more each year.
The mulatto holds himself a little
better than the negro, while the full-
blooded African looks upon his col
ored kinsman as a mongrel and a
reproach to his race. There will
some day be a separation between the
two classes in the South, and #e
think there is far more dangei of a
race war within the race than be
tween the whites and blacks.
But there will never be any exten
sive emigration of the negro from
this country.' He is with us to stay
and the sooner the Southern people
realize this fact, and begin the work
of moulding him into a good and
peaceful tenantry, the better for the
country. You bad as well discuss
moving our mountains as the negro.
He is a fixture ou us, and can be
made a very useful fixture, too.

"THEWAY OF THETRANSCRESSOR IS

Eaeb day 'this Scriptural declara

The newspapers are a continual en
dorsement of Divine commands.
Study yuur Bible, and then read the
happenings of the world, and the
veriest skeptic most be, within bis
heart, convinced of the prophetic
truths of the Holy Book, even if he
denies its divine inspiration/ You
cannot open a paper bat that its col

to a violation of the laws of God.
If a man will live up to the teach,
iuga of .Jie Bible, crime and its i
tendant misery would be unknown,
A few weeks ago we read about a wo.
man who had flagrantly violated one
of fie ten commandments, and in a
fit of desperation following her dis
grace, had shot her betrayer dead on
the streets of New York. This week
the tidings came that the murderess
died in her prison cell from remorse
and a broken heart. To gratify a
§i temporary passion these two people
violated one of the most solemn
commands of the Almighty, and
discovered, when too late, that “the
wages of sin is death.” Had Mrs.
Southworlh and Mr. Feltus lived up
to the teachings of their Bible, they
wou!!d both to day be alive and
happy, instead of filling bloody and
unhallowed graves.
The Bible is" the greatest safe
guard ever thrown around lrail Im

land indeed bean earthly hell. Even
dispensing with its future promises
and rewards, it deserves to be hon
