-The American lias published an inter
view with Mr. Tom W. Neal, an old
journalist of this city, concerning the
recent fanning of sectional strife by
certoin papers. The interview narrates
some horrible stories, which have
caused no little interest here. In speak
ing to the American, Mr. Neal says:
r ‘I cannot look on the Maxwell bouse
as I did this morning, without rent in
hering as bloody and gratuitous a trag
edy as ever stained the records of our
civil war.
In the winter of 1864, I waa city
editor of the Daily Press, with editorial
rooms over Demovide’s drug store. Op*
posite stoo i tbe Maxwell house, in an
unfinished condition, then used by the
Federal* as a prison for Confederate
soldiers, and it was often crowded, too.
“One morning as I came down stairs
and turned down Cherry toward Union,
I saw a Federal guard taking his smok
ing gun from- hto shoulder, while peo
ple were standing around with ex
pressions - of horror on their faces. On
asking a citizen what was the matter,
be answered with indignation and sub
dued fear: ‘Look! Tbat Federal guard
has murdered, a Confederate soldier.’
“Looking to the fourth story of the
Maxwell house, I saw a dead Confed
erate soldier with his head lying in a
window and blood streaming from him
down the walls and spattering tbe
pavement below. 'Die guard bad orders
to shoot any Confederate who appeared
at a window. He told the Confederate
to go back or be would shoot. Tbe boy
in g^ey, having no idea he would do so,
responded by playfully waving bis
hand at the guard. In an instant a
ballet went crashing through his brain,
and be was a dead man. The Confeder
ate prisoners declared they had received
no intimation of any Snch order.”

The Niles Women About to Be Relieved
From the Kansas City Jail.
Kansas City, Jan. 15.—(Special)—
It to altogether probable , ; that the two
women alleuged to be Mrs. John and
Kate Bender, wbo are now confined in
the Labette county jail, awaiting trial
for the murder of Dr. York, will be
liberated in a few days. Mr. James an
attorney or this city, represented the
women at the preliminary trial. Since
that time he has been quietly at work
collecting evidence which will estab
lish the fact that the women are Mrs.
Almira Griffeth and Mrs. Sarah E. Da
vis. He now claims to have .affidavits
showing that front 1870 to 1874 these
two women were in Michigan. The
crimes" with which the Benders are
charged were all committed daring
these years. On being acquainted of
this fact tbe prosecuting attorney of
Labette connty wrote the attorney for
the defendants toiling him that if be
could establish these facts by affidavits
be would discharge the prisoners. Mr.
James will leave for Oswego next week
with his affidavit*.
