Oar City Fathers cannot do too much to encourage and bnild np these schools. We have the right man at their head, and every dollar invested in this noble work will be returned many fold. We must en large and extend our schools, and make Athens the educational center for this and all neighboring States. We learn that other cities are bid ding for Prof. Branson. Athens cannot afford to lose him. It would be nothing short of a calamity upon oar city. All of oar people admire and respect him, and are willing to do as well or better by him than any other place. The quiet, industrious class of our col ored population—who till the lands and add to the wealth and prosperity of their country—are entirely con tent, and you never hear of them going to conventions and passing resolutions of censure against the white people among whom they live. .Neither do they endorse the inccn. diary utterances of their sclf-ap pointed leaders. It is such men as Pledger—who is able to wear Clin- chilla overcoats with far collars* stop at fine hotels, and ride in palace sleeping cars—who are stirring up all the strife and trouble ; and it is only the poor dopes of such leaders who are in danger in the Sonth, by being drawn into unlawful acts. . Take the country nigger, with his old slouch wool hat and patchwork suit; who comes to town with his ox cart and single bale of cotton, fol lowed by the proverbial yellow cur of low degree; and who eats iu his humble little cabin his slice of fried bacon and ash-cake, and you will find him a quiet, contented citizen who would laugh in iu your face you told him that his white neigh bors had designs against his life, liberty or little property. That plain 1 country darkey is filling his allotcd sphere iD life, and is happier and better content than the kiDg on his throne. So far from looking upon his white neighbors as enemies, considers them his natural protec tors, and when he gets into trouble or needs assistance, he does not call on his own race and people, but goes straight to the “ white folks” to sup ply his wants or protect him. A negro who remains in his place and does not seek to force social equality with the supsrior race, control affairs of which he is en tirely ignorant, in the interest of vile and unscrupulous men, is as safe to THE WEEKLY PRESS. The best weekly papers in the Sonth are published in the cities aronnd Athens, and we are glad to know that they are all liberally pa tronized. Every patriotic man should take his county paper before patronizing any other, for it matters not how small the sheet, it will prove of more interest and value to him than a dozen mammoth metropolitan journals. The home paper tells its readers about his neighbors, in whose welfare he has a peculiar interest; the others talk about foreign affairs, that are of secondary importance. The country weekly, too, has never been properly appreciated as an ad vertising medium by merchants. These sheets are eagerly read by the class of people who furnish yon trade, and every line is digested. No honorably-cond noted paper pub lished in the ConDties contiguous to Athens is considered a rival by Thb Banner. They are friends and co- iaborers in the field with us, and we advise out merchants to generously patronize them. In journalism, like every other calling, there are papers edited by narrow-minded and en vious men, who look upon every dol lar that goes from their county to an outside paper as taken from their own pockets ; but be it said to the credit of the Georgia press that there n^ts A daily newspaper now costs but little more than the old-time weekly. The CHICAGO DAILY NEWS is an impartial, in dependent newspaper. It is a member of the Asso ciated Press. It prints all the news and sells it for i cent a day. Mailed, post paid, for $3.00 per year, or 25 cents per month. This is $3.00 per year less than the price of any other Chicago morning paper. The CHICAGO DAILY NEWS is not a blanket- sheet.
