Its fittings will necessitate the presence of hundreds of witnesses and-scores of lawyers, and while here they will speud their money with our merchants, and many will become pleased with our business outlook, and settle down among un it menus twenty thousand dollars a year to lawyers, and many times as much to merchants. It is just such a thing as Athens needs at this time. It is useless to tell of its benefits further than those, for all thinking men will see them at glance.. The question now is to Becurc the Court. How can this be done ? Mr. Carlton has already introduced the bill, and the outlook for its pas sage is favorable. The plain duty now of the citizen of Athens, is to use every effort in its support. Let every man who lias the interests of Athens at heart write to his friends nround this section, and tell them to communicate with Mr. Carlton, urging the passage of the bill. It will be a great advantage to this section of tho State. It will remove the necessity of men having to go to Atlanta, so far from their homes, and euab’.e them to get jus tice in a Court easily within their reach. Therefore, let every man in North east Georgia write and urge the pas sage of this bill. It cannot be de nied us if it is seen that a united section of the State is unanimous for its passage. ■ &■ ' ATHENS AS A RAILROAD CENTRE. Our city has the promise of being one of the most important railway centres in the State, and at no very distant day we will have roads ra diating out in every direction. It is here that the two great rival syndi- dicates—the G., C. A N. and R. & D.—will meet and clash ; and from Athens starts out the important Southern line, destined to extend into a perfect net-work of roads, controlling a great part of the busi ness of the extreme South. Here after, whenever a railroad is built in Eastern or Middle Georgia, Athens is sure to be its destination, for here it will connect with competing lines. A direct Western connection for it is only a question of time, and a very short time at that beats and imposters, we look with more favor i a the old loarist gang. When an individual or corporation contemplates making an investment it docs not hire Tom, Dick and Harry logo through the country with a brass band, and proclaim tbeir busi ness from the house-tops, bat goes about it in a quiet msnoer, with at much secrecy as possible. When a man voluntarily tells you that he is an agent for English or any other capitalists, and shows a desire to give the fact as much publicity as possible, just set bim down as a fraud of the first water. If there are English companies seeking invesV meats in our Slate, rest assured that they are proceeding in a business like manner, and are not sending hundreds of men rambling over tbe country, like Ponce de Leon in bis search for the mythical Fountain of Youth. We should always welcome stran gers seeking homes or investments in our midst, and such parties can be known by tbeir manner and de portment. But do not suifer your self to be imposed upon and taken io by every imposter that comes along. Hows Tkt's? There are in every town and conns ty a class of men who have appoint ed themselves censors of the press, and their greatest ambition is to pore over the columns of a paper in search for some article to which they can take exception. You can al ways tell such characters by tbeir self important looks and the wise expression of tbeir ears. Athens has a few of these creatures, but we are glad to say, to the credit of tbe city, that they arc few and far be tween. They are men who attend strictly to their own business—when a nickle is in sight; but in idle moments kindly devote a portiou of their valuable time and .fertile brain to the great public work of purifying the press. We care as little for the censures of such two-for. a-nickle Solons as we do for their commenda lion. We publish a paper to suit ourself and to interest the reading public ; and any subscriber who don't like it, is at full liberty to confine his literary talent to Greer's Almanac or some similar production that will suit his taste. With tbe hundreds of articles it takes to make up a daily paper, it is a matter of ot ter impossibility not to sometimes publish something that had best be omitted ; but we wager the assertion that Thz Banner is as clean and courteous a paper as is issued in America. If a few of these censors will turn tbeir attention to remod eling themselves, and show some of the liberality, enterprise and public spirit manifested by this paper, they would be better thought of by the community at large. We have no animosity, however, against these censors, for we fully realize the fact that they are thus acting not through malice, but for the lack of proper brain food. Our people are a restless race, and always ready to sell out and change quarters. Hence a man coining among them with the ex pressed desire to invest a few thou sands in land or manufactures, finds the fruit ripe to his hand. This trait is being taken advantage of by PQScrupuloua strangers to have a good time and receive special atten tion without depleting their pocket- books, or to swindle guileless vic tims. A year or so ago the rage was to bring train loads of hungry and consumptive Yankees to onr sunny dime, when onr innocent and un suspecting people would "put the big pot in the little one,” and almost bankrupt themselves entertaining ’their distinguished guests. Bat nothing came of all this. These Northern visitors, after leaving onr larders in about as depleted a con ’ditidh as a Sherman raider, and having a good time free of cost, bied back home to abuse and slander the very people whose bread they hod eaten. Our people, after a time, t‘ caught on” to this Northern tour ist’s business, and the Pilgrims had to seek new quarters. The South is now being invaded by a horde of “representatives of English capitalists,” seeking invest ments for untold millions. Onr ople arc nibbling at this bait as readily aa they did tho tourists business—and of the two classes of ” THE WORLD” AND SENATOR BRICE- The New York World is making an attempt to show that Col. Brice bought the Ohio Scnatorship ; and this able democratic daily is so per sistently bitter and vindictive in its attack, as to impress the reader that it is prompted more by personal hate againBt the new Senator and its soreness over its inability to defeat him, ;thau by .on honest desire to purify its party.. If The World has proof that Seofttor Biice secured his election through dishonorable means, it is its duty to publish the same. Bnt to make such a grave charge against an honored and die— tingnished member of its party on a vague suspicion, is both unfair and impolitic. It seems fe ns, feat The World can do better Service by point ing out the corruption and trickery in the Republican ranks, than by thus assailing its own leaders, and fur nishing ammunition wife which io fight us. Suppose every Democratic paper in the Union punned such a strength by this war on Senator Brice—for every fair-minded ant reasoning man looks upon it a8 the idle ravings of a disappointed editor, who failed to cany his point, Wi believe Col. Brice to be an honorable and patriotic gentleman, who can do Ohio and the Democratic party more good in the Senate than any man in that State.
