ATHENS BANNER * SATURDAY MORNING . NOVEMBER 7, 1891
tOMB TEXAS HAPPENINGS.
ThatShovTHow Uv*ly Life is In the
Lone 8ter State.
Glancing over aeveral exchange*, a
few interesting pieces were clipped
from their columns as to Texss life.
They are interesting in many phases.
Apparently Texans do not submit to
being robbed with any great degree of
Christian forbearance if we are to
]ud{e from the instance of a Dallas
geutleman whom a burly road agent
tried to bold up as he drove through a
suburban avenue of that city at night
in'uompany with a lady. When the
bold marauder junked into the buggy
he clutched the lady’s throat with one
hand while he covered the gentleman
with a big revolver and ordered him to
stop. But before he could explain
wha’ he wanted him to s'op for the
gentleman grabbed the b.tidit’s pistol
and told the lady to whip up the horse,
which she did with so much energy
that th» bandit was j-rked out of the
buggy and left his pistol behind. In
falling him foot caught in the wheel and
be was dragged some distance while the
gentleman u*ed the highwayman’s re
volver to shoot at him as he was thus
tobogganed along. Makinga living in
the ban lit bu-inesa down in Texis
seems to be almost as dangerous as
monkeyi g with a morose buzs-saw.
Texas men are not very easy to shock.
After comfortably absorbing 1,460 volts
of Wtstingbouse alternating current
electricity a ban Antonio electrician
pulh-d himself together and went se-
tenely to work again as soon as he bad
disposed of his burned shoes that the
current destroyed Apparently the

A Texan named Humbert, says th
Nashville American, has inv; ed a
machine by which eveiy ginner can
“compress” his own cotton. As the
liut ii aves the gin it passes between
rollers which deliver it into a list web
that falls into the lint box in such shsp
that the power of an ordinaly p r ess
will r- 'uce a bale to a less size than a
liv'd-audit pressesn do. The manufac
turers claim that the cotton is in betU
c million for the mills ban when com
pre setl under the pre«ent system. T •
m i. bine has been on trial at Gdvcs-
to i w here it is said to have worked
satisfactorily. It is now on exhibition
in Atlanta, where it attracts great at
tention If nil that is claimed for it In
tru ■ it is » great invention for both tin
pk i er mu 1 the railroads—but we ha\e
our douh:i about its making a smaller
bale than a hydraulic press. It is
good ileal to believe that it can mak.
as small a ba'e with the same quail ity
of cotton

The Last Resting Place of tha Remains
of Mr. Davis.
Richmond, Nov. 8.—The committee
representing the Ladies’ Hollywood
Memorial Association called on Mrs.
Jtfffefson' Davis, with the view of ex
pressing a desire that the association be
allowed the custody of the remains of
Mr. Davis. Various places of sepulture
were talked of, including the grounds
of the white house of the Confederacy.
Mrs. Davis said her husband had often
expressed his aversion to any public,
noisy thoroughfare as a place of burial,
and had desired a quiet and secluded
place for himself, where his whole fam
ily might rest near him. She said she
had finally decided on Holly Witod cemt-
tery, but had not as yet selected the
exi ct spot. She assured the ladies that
as soon as her selection was mads and
the interment had taken place she would
then turn over the whole section to the
Holly wool Memorial association. Mrs.
Davis has a son (Joseph) buried in Hol
lywood. It is also the place of inter
ment of some 18,000 Confederate sol
diers.
Mrs. Davis expressed her earnest de
sire to make Richmond her fnture horn;
and said it was no longer a question of
anything but means. If she can make
satisfactory financial arrangements she
will'soon be back to spend the re*t of
her days. The site of the monament to
Mr. Davis'will be left in the hands of
the Davis Monument association.

RECOMMENDATIONS,
VFrom A. R. Srorronn, Librarian of Congress:
•The novelty of the plan, exhibiting by graphic
diagrams s complete eynchronology of Ameri
can political history, is carried oat with admir
able Ingenuity, snd the work may fairly be
termed s Breviary of American Politics.”
From Hog. S. 8. Cox: “Only one work Is com
parable with it—the 'Statistical Atlas'by the
Government—and to eay this is high eulogy.”
From Bbbboh J. Lossixo, LL. D., Historian:
Like s concave mirror it reflects to a single
focus sn epitome of tbe essential elements of
onr national history, showing clearly at a glance
tbe progress of the nation, from Its infancy to
its present period ot maturity.
