Tite time set by the act with which
Chinoso residents of the United States
must register expires on next Friday.
The law demands that the Chinaman
shall legister his name,occupation, etc.,
with the collector of internal revenue
of his district. It originally provided
that photographs of the registreo must
be filed, but this section is declared un
necessary by Mr. Carlisle. Tho reship
ment to China is the penalty provided
for failing to observe the provisions.
There aro 100,000 in tho country. About
100 have registered. Four days is given
the remaining 09,1100 in which to come
forward and declare themselves.
It is understood here that the Till
man followers in South Carolina tire
going to run the governor against But
ler for tho senate, whose term expires
March 4, 1895. The plan is to elect
Tillman bv direct vote of the people,
which will l>e an innovation in South
Carolina politics which it seems is de
manded by public sei»ment.

and Mr. Carter, of the counsel for the
United States, continued his argument.
When Carter proceeded to argue on
the subject of regulations, he was in

counsel for Great Britain, who said that
Great Britain would not recede from
the position that the question of rights
should bo argued apart from the ques
tion of regulations.
An animated discussion followed, in
which Baron de Courcet, president of
tribunal justice Harlan. British ambas
sador, Lord Hannah. SiT Charles Rus

It was finally decided that the coun
sel foT Great Britain should argue the
two questions separately, but the tri

Macon Telegraph: The president of
one of out banks remarked to the writer
last week that the government could get
plenty of gold, for we all prefer the
paper, was it not for the fact we have to
exchange by weight. For instance, my
neighbor sent $5,000 in gold to the sub-
treasury in New York and the abrasion
or loan in weight amounted to $11,25,
which was deducted from the return
So in the case of the Denver banks,
which exchanged $500,COO with the
government some time since for cur
rency. The loss from th : a course was
several tbusand dollars. Our Macon
banker said: “I have on hand about $6,

exchange, but I don’t propose to pay a
premium or accept a discount for tbe
privileges, as I can pay it out over my
couter at par and no question asked.”
