New York, May 5.—The steamship
Clyde, which sailed for Charleston,
bears in its hold two bronze tablet?
which will ornament tho new granite
tomb of General Francis Marion, "The
Swamp Fox.”
The revolutionary hero was buried at
his Belle Isle plantation, on the Santee
river, South Carolina, about 50 miles
north of Charleston, and a simple brick
tomb, covered with a slab of marble,
marked the spot.
Home years ago a tree fell across the
tomb and disfigured it. The state leg
islature passed an act to buy a new
tombstone and requested Governor Till
man to have the work completed.
It has been done in a substantial and
elegant manner. The memorial is in
the form of a sarcophagus. The base
block is three feet wide by over six feet
long. On it are several other blocks of
atone making a total height of six feet.

Offensive Partisanship Charges Broach*
to Bear on Cleveland.
Washington, May 5.—Charges of of
fensive partisanship against federal of
fice holders are coming in from every
quarter. The congressmen say that this
seems to be the only way to get some of
the Republicans ottt. In this condition
the president must have been relieved
to find that there is one district where
the Republican incumbents could not be
arraigned. This is Mr. Outhwaite’s
district in Ohio. He called at the White
House recently, and in a conversation
remarked that the federal officials at
Columbus cannot be ousted by bringing
charges against them, for they not only
abstained from undue participation in
politics, but they are all good men and
efficient officials.

There was a considerable wreck on the
C lattanooga, Rome and Columbus road
a short distance from Lavender Mondav
morning..The morning train from Chat
tanooga had just passed tbe summit of
the Lavander range and started on the
down grade when the track spread and
the engire plunged onto the crossties
and in a few feet more it ran off the
ties and turned over on its side, carrying
tho tender with it. The baggagojear was
thrown crosswise and the rails were
twisted and torn from the ties. Some
of the other cars were derailed. The
engineer and fireman who escaped death
by the greatest miracle, crawled out
through the window, which was open
on the side of the overturned engine
Fortunately no one was hurt seriously
but several of the passengers received a
considerable j >lting up.
J. H. YanStavoreu died at his home

Stavoren was and artist of rare abilities
and had won for himself w..rld-wide
fame by his magnificent oil paintings
Hia entire family are well-known artists
Tne rooms in his home are adorned with
many beautiful paintings which were
painted by him elf and the other mem

The German citizens of Augnsta are
holding their annual Schuetz-.nfest
This is the sixteenth year of the Scliuet
zen Club in Augusta, and each spring
the members r-f the club and their
guests have a royal good time. The
days will be given up to feasting games
target shooting and other sports, Whi’
the night will b8 made merry by
dance. The successful winner of tbe
target contest for king is crowned at t
ball on the second night. Tbs custom
of holding these "tests” is an old one,
and is in vogue in every oity,
village .and hamlet in Germany.
In tbe large cities in tbe
Fatnerland a whole week is given up
to tha festivities. There, as here, the
king is he who shoots the best. The king
contest in Germany is had by shooting
at a bird, and not at a target, as iu this
county. The origin of these tests is ex
tremely remote, anl while not in any
way a religious festival, it compares
with the carnivals of Italy and Spain.
In tbe latter countries the holidays al
ways oome before Lent, bat these Ger
man test days are invariably in tbe
spring.

A WONDERFUL MACHINE.
There is no doubt that raaa is a fine
