HERE’S ANOTHER.
AN ALTERCATION BETWEEN C
C. DEAN AND W. H. LOWE.
ABOUT TUESDAY NIGHTS AFFAIB
The Action of Police Being
Investigated—More Sensa
tions to Follow in All
Probability.
The article in yesterday’s Banns* in
regard to the difficulty between Messrs.
C. C. Dean and W. H. Lowe at the
room of the former created quite a stir
yesterday morning, and everybody was
talking about it in a little while.
Esrly in the morning Mr. Lowe met
Mr. Dean on Broad street near Ber
nard’s store and a few words passed
between them. Dean said Lowe called
him a d—n liar, while Lowe said Dean
simply jumped on him.
At any rate they clinohed and Dean
gave Lowe a rap or two aoross the
head. They were separated and th-
police took both of them in charge and
carried them to the station house.
MB. LOWB’S ACCOUNT.
Upon the arrival of the CbronicU
•come the first utterance from Mr.
.Lowe’s side of the afTair. He described
the affair in a column artiole beginning
2>y tellibg how he and Officer Davit
succeeded in getting up to the window
of the room, and said that in the room
were six men playing cards for money.
Here is the story as he told it:
•“Through the cracks of the curtail,
as the wind would blow it back wt
could very plainly see the men. Th*
money was on the table—one of the
men said: “Boys, this is the sliffeat
game I ever playtd in.”
“Yea,” replied another.
Being unfamiliar with the game of
cards 1 uLderstood little of the game.
My partner, Davis, was meanwhile »
spectator at the other window, and from
his position he could see the table
“I’ll go you five,” said the first speak

he spoke he slapped down a ohip on the
table
u Boys, I want a drink,” said the pro
prietor.
”1 do too,” said another. Then tht
crowd drank.
“Hell,” said one of the men, “is
everybody going to drink.”
With the instinct of an animal the
proprietor looked out of the window
and aaw me. At the same moment
Davis jumped into the room, and feel

Mr. Dean said that ha caught Mr.
Lowe looking through his window and
that be gave him such treatment as he
deserved. He said there was was ab
solutely no gambling going on in his
room.
Thus the matter rests for a little
while, hot there U no telling when it
will break out afresh, as the end is not
yet.

Writes a Card to the PubUo About
Tuesday Night’s Occurrence.
Athkhb, Ga., May 17, 1893.
To th* Public My son by regular
contract and agreement, is the Athens
correspondent of the Augusts Chronicle.
Recently be has in accordance with
duties assigned and instructions given
him, been writing up certain trans
actions and conditions which obtain in
Athens. This seems to have given
great offense and annoyance in certain
channels. In order to break my son
down, an infamous and oowardly ar
rangement wss set on foot lest night
which was announced and promulgated
the evening before through which to
entrap, outrage and insnlt him.' This
I pronounced as infamous and ooward
ly, and I am responsible for tbs asser
tion, as to what my son has written. I
have only this to say; that he is as all
other young men, may have been, in
discreet in some matters. Perhaps he
has, but as to his aim and purpose, it
has been for the good of Athens in
trying to expose and pat down those
things in our midst which are not only
violative of all law, but which all reli
gious and moral sentiment condema.
This being true—and it is true—then
believing that the good, true and well
thinking people of Athens will sustain
me, I propose to take the place of my
son so far as making his charges true
and shall endeavor so far as a father's
duties shall go to see to it that in the
future discharges of bis duties all good
shall be commended and no crime,
guilt or guilty man shall escape.

An Earnest Appeal for Small
Industries—Something He
Says Must be Done and
That in Short
Order.
Editob Banner:—The article writ
ten by Mr. H. H. Carlton is an able
one and every voter in Athens should
paste it up for future reference. There
is something radically wrong in Ath
ens and our town is fast going to sleep
and losing our grip on the trade. Why
is it that nearly all the small stores in
the outer edges of the city that a year
ago were booming and are now doted
«p? The answer is spedal tax killed
them out. Next, why are so many
houses for rent and for sale? The an
swer is high taxes and no industries to
snpport the laboring classes. 1 speak
from experience, as out of 1C bouses I
have for rent 10 are wacanr, besides 2
stores. Year before last these 10
houses and 3 stores brought me in $78
a month. This year I will hardly col
lect enough rent to pay taxes. Yet, as
Mr. Carlton says, in the face of these
stubborn facts the counoll sees fl- to
raise salaries and advanoe taxes. In
time of poverty reduce expenses and sal
aries. That should have been our
council’s motto. Instead of this we
see the coundl advancing salaries and
increasing expenses every meeting.
Gentlemen, call a halt at once or else
you will kill the city of Athens dead as
a door nail. I tell you plainly, real
estate would not to-day bring one-half
what it would two years ago, and yet
the city assessors this year assessed it
at the same price. I make them this
