Female college, the oldest educationa
institution in the south, was opened
with a grand vocal concert under the
direction of Miss Antonette Tracey, the
exercises being held in the Moravian
church.
The building was beautifully illumi
nated with electric lights, handsomely
decorated and crowded with the patrons
and friends of the school from various
parts of the union.
The program rendered was especially
interesting and highly creditable, show
ing that music is an important depart
ment of the old institution.

Norte, confirming the press dispatches
describing tbe victories of the revolu
tionists on the east const.

department to forward all important

the resolution, Consul Braida went to

New York, May 29.—Dr. William
A. Wheeler, head of the Marine hospi
tal service on Ellis island, who was re
cently sent abroad to inspect the sea
ports from whence large shipments of
immigrants are likely to be made,
writes that at Hamburg there are large-
numbers of immigrants housed there in
barracks, who come from Russia, Ar
tria, Hungary and southern Europe, ei
route to America, and many of thi;
are extremely filthy. The barracks ii
which these people are confined, pend
ing medical examination, contain ac
commodations for 1,009 people, and
they are never empty.

usual incident. Sir Richard Webster,

A Cloudburst In Illinois.
Jacksonville, May 29.—A genuine
cloudburst inundated the whole lower
part of this place. Fireballs called out
a crowd to the rescue of the beleagured
people who were abut in by a sea of
scathing waters, and all were taken
away in boats and on rafts. Tbe city
