CLAYTON STREET WINS
In ths Cams of Baseball Yesterday
Afternoon,
Probably the las: game of base ball on
the College campus before commence
ment comes and goes, was that between
Clayton and Thomas streets yesterday
afternoon.
It was played for the benefit of the
Industrial Home and an entrance fee of
ten cents charged. Quite a nice crowd
-was present.
Clayton street presented the follow
ing team: Nicholson pitcher, Har-de
man catcher, Carlton 1st base, Tal-
madge 2nd base, Davis 3rd base, E. R
congratulated on the splendid results
attained.
This morning at all of the schools the
usual closing exercises will be held,and
they will be full of interest to all who
attend. The parents and relatives of
the children are especially invited to
be present.
At the Washington Street School,
after the reading of the honor rolls, and
the rendition of several songs selected
for the occasion, Prof. D. C. Barrcw,
president of the board of education,
will make an address to the graduating
class and deliver the medals and dip
lomas.
The closing exeroises will be pleasant
and entertaining and doubtless a large
crowd will be in attendance.

■Rev. Mr. Cuery will Not Preach at
Emmanuel Church.
Some time since the vestry of Em
manuel church extended a call to Rev.
Mr. Guery, of Florence, S. C., to ooine
over and accept the rectorship of their
church.
Mr. Guery ha3 had the oall under
consideration for several weeks but not
until a few days since did he make up
his decision.
He decided that under the circum
stances that surrounded him he could
not come, and so notified the vestry of
Hodgson, Jr., shortstop, Baxter right ( Emmanuel church.

The first inning started Clayton in tbe
lead and although the Thomas street

at Mitchell’s bridge. It was one of the

MRS- SCARBOROUGH DEAD-
She Passes Away at 4:30 Yesterday
Afternoon.
Mrs- Minnie Scarborough, wife of E.
F. Scarborough, died yesterday after
noon at 4:30 o’clock at her home at 214
Hancock avenue.
Mrs. Scarborough was thirty-five
yean old and had been sick for more
than a year with consumption when
she died.
ahe leaves four children. She said in
heart-broken tones, with her pale face
bathed in hot tears just before she
died, that she dreaded to leave her poor
children, and but for them she could
depart with pleasant smiles. Her grief
over having to part with her children
was pathetic.
Just before she fell into the peacefu 1
sleep from which she never awakened,
she raised up and said: “I want to make
one request before I go. I want you to
thank the good Christian ladies of Ath
ens for the generous aid they have giv
en me, and tell them 1 died with their
blessed namea on my lips.”
Mrs. Scarborough waa a member of
tbe Baptist church, and the fnnerai
ceremonies will take pj.acq. Jrora the
First Church at 4:40 tbits afternoon.
The interment will be made in Oconee
cemetry.

Sherman Burgess, a Negro, Killed In
Oconee County.
Oconee county comes to the front
with another killing.
Monday night a negro named Sher
man Burgess who lives in the Scull
Shoals district became involved in a
difficulty with Mr. Wesley Alford, of
that distriot, and as a result received a
load of buckshot in his face which tore
away nearly half of his head.
The negro died almost instantly from
the effecti of the wound.
Details of the affair are meagre, bat
from what can be gathered together it
seems that the negro was eptirely in
tbe wrong. He was a disorderly and
dangerous character.

Couldn’t Stand ths Strain.
Chicago, May 30.—Weaver, Getz &
Co., one of the largest coal firms in Chi
cago have been forced to the wall. Sat
urday an assignment to D. V. Furinton
of Chicago, was made for the benefit of
creditors. H. E Weaver, senior mem
ber of the firm, said today, regarding
tbe failure: “We found out Saturday
afternoon we were not going to pall
through, and we had to let a big note
go to protest. So we decided to turn
everything over for the benefit of our
creditors. Collections haye been bad

Mrs. Smith Wants a Posto'tice in Tsn-

Among the thousands of letters re
ceived dally by Postmaster-General
Bissell which find their way to the
official waste paper basket was one
whioh net only escaped the nsnal fate
but elicted a column in the Constitu
tion and wide notice in the press of the
whole Union. It was a small note,
penned in a refined femenine band and
moderately asking for a position as
postmistress in a little college-town
far away up among the Tennessee
mountains.
The writer was the fair haired daugh
ter of the late General Edmund Kirly
Smith. It was of her that the General
spoke as he lay dying at his home at
Sewanee, he said: “I don’t mind dy
ing, if only Carrie is left, she is a
tower of stength.”
His estimation is correct, for the
plucky little woman is going right to
work to earn herfllving and help|itake
care of her young sisters. It is need
less to add that she will receive the
place without any further trouble.
Both north and south have joined in
the aid of this fair descendant of so no
ble a man. The representatives of the
Grand Army of the Bepnblio have sent
in thousands of letters in her behalf.
One veteran warrior- bearing of her
affliction remarked, “We’ll put her in
if it takes s regiment of veterans to
doit.”

The Engineer Killed.
INDIANAPOLIS, May 30. — Passenger
train No. 36 on the Louisville, New
Albany and Chicago, which left this
city at 2 o’clock a. m.. was wrecked
near Broad Ripple; seven miles north
of this city. Engineer George E. Plant,
of this city, was killed and Fireman
Williams, also of this,city, was injured
it is thought fatally.
Dr. CraTM Virtually a Free Han.
Denver. May j 80. — Dr. Thacher
Graves, who last year was convicted of
the mnrder of Mrs. Josephine Barnaby,
of Providence. R. L, is again a free
man for the first time in three years.
He appeared in Judge Burns’ court,
where his motion tor a new trial has
been pending for some weeks. With
out any delay the court set the new
trial for June 12 and fixed the bail at
|Sl),WO. Jndge Macon, the doctor’s at
torney, signed the bond and the prison
er walked from the courtroom a free
man. The general opinion among law
yers and court officials is that this ends
the famous case. There is no expecta
tion that the second trial will ever be
called and the final motion will proba
bly be nolle prosequi*
A Shooting Scrap* In Walton.
Social Circle, Ga., May 80. — A
shooting scrape occurred at the works
of the Walton Guano company at this
place, in which W. B. Malsby was in
stantly killed and two negroes were
shot. Dan Connell was shot m the arm
and Lizzie Pharr was shot in the knee
by the same ball. , W. B. Malsby went
with Bailiff Harralson to arrest George
Connell and while ho was waiting for
Harralson to read a warrant to Connell
somebody shot him from tiehind the
house, filling lils -breast with buck
shot, and killing him instantly. It seems
from the evidence, that Malsby shot the
second negro after he had been shot
himself and walked away about 20 feet
and fell dead. ' V 1

St. Johns, N* F., May 30.—The Vik
ing ship, bnilt in Norway for the exhi
bition at the World's Fair, passed this
port bound for Chicago. She is a model
of the Viking ship 1,000 years old found
recently in Norway, and is 78 feet long,
1G broad. G deep and draws 2 feet of
water. She sails 12 knots in a free
wind and carries a crew of 10 men. She
27 days from Christiania, and reports
all well’. She spoke a tug, but did not
call in here. » J

Picnic at thx Park —On Thursday
the Oconee Street Public School will
pionic in royal style at Voss Park, that
delightful little pleasure resort, with
its bowers, brooks, birds and rich
beauty.

Brokihis Arm —Arthur, the thir

ton, fell from a tree on Tan Yard
Branch yesterday afternoon about 2
o’olook and broke his arm. He was re
moved to his home and given early
medical attention.

A New Coal Schutk.—'The Sea
Board Air Line is building a fine coal
schute just above the depot in this ciiy.
The coal station is now nearly complet
ed. and will be one of the most exten
sive on the system. A large force of
bandB has been engaged in tbe con-
s ruction of the schute for several
weeks.
Music and Refreshments^—Tonight
Glenn Lodge Hall will be filled with
the members and their families. It be
ing the fifth Wednesday night, the reg
ular order of business will be suspend
ed, and the occasion will be a social re
union. Refreshments, musio and spicy

New York, May 30.— R. C. Kerens,
of St. Louis, member of the Republican
national committee from Missouri, is at
the Fifth Avenue hotel and announced
that the Hon. Joseph H. Manley, secre
tary of the committee, had been em
powered to open a Republican head
quarters here next September.

London, May 30.— During the fear
ful cyclone which has been raging in
the bay of Bengal the ship Germania
was lost and 64 people lost their lives
with the ship.

A Woman’s PsouU&r Fancy and its
Execution.
There was a baptising in East Athens
Sunday alteration attended by peculiar
circumstances.
An old negro woman who has been
sick for many months and is almost re
duced to a skeleton has for some time
wanted to be baptised, but her rela
tions thought to put her into water in
her condition would mean almost in
stant death. The old woman insisted
on being baptised and said that it
would improve her.
Snnday a large exoavation grave
ahape and several feet deep was made
in the yard large enough to hold the
woman’s body. Several negroes car
ried water and filled the excavation up
The woman was sewed up in a sheet
and oarried out to tbe pool stretched
style. She was lowered to the surfaoe
of the water and held while the minis
ter repeated slowly and solemnly the
baptismal ceremony.
As the last word fell from the min
ister’s lips, the woman was lowered till
ahe was completely rmersed. She was
taken baok in the boose and re-dressed
Contrary to all expectations the
emersion has not apparently injured
her, and yesterday ahe declared that
she was much improved.

Pension*.
Washington, May 30.—Probably the
most important pension decision ever
sent from the office of the secretary of
tbe interior to the commissioner o? pen
sions was filed today. It is believed by
those high io authority in the pension
bureau that it wiU reduce the payment
of pensions under the act of June 27
1890, between *15,000,000 and *20 000-
000.
■ It involves the repeal of an order
passed by Gen. Raum and approved by
Assistant Secretary Bussey and a return
to the language of the statute requiring
the disability, not of service origin, to
be such as to prevent the applicant from
earning a support by manual labor.
Stcretary H ike Smith has been con
sidering the principles involved in this
decision for several weeks, and so im
portant did he deem it, that when it
vas called to his attention from the
pension board of appeals he submitted
the question involved to Attorney Gen
eral Olney and Judge Lochren, the
commissioner of pensions, both of whom
concurred in the correctness of the de
cision.
The decision is in the case of one
Bennett, who sought a pension under
the old law, alleging that while in the
service at Raleigh, N. C., he was pros
trated by sunstroke whioh resulted in
partial deafness in both ears. His ap
plication was denied on the ground
that while the applicant has slight deaf
ness as alleged, it was not of sufficient
seriousness to warrant any rating. The
testimony showed that Bennett could
hear a watch ticking at a distance of
half an inch from either ear. Bennett
subsequently applied for and received a
pension of *12 a month under the act of
June 27,1890.
The decision knocks all such claims
and pensions into a cooked hat.
Tbe decision is signed by John M.
Reynolds, assistant secretary of the
interior.
Secretary Smith, in another commu-
uioation to the commissioner of pen
sions, says that it is hardly necessary tD
present argument or to support by au
thority the proposition that neither the
secretary nor the commissioner can by
order or practice supercede an act of
congress and he therefore directs here
after the practice of the office conform
to the law.
MURDER, ARSON AND SUICIDE.
A Crazy Husband Kills Wife, Fires the
House and Suicides.
Huntington, Iod.,May 30.—Roanoke
a town of about G00 inhabitants, in the
noytheast corner of this county, is all
excitement. Last night it ' was
awakened from its quiet by an alarm of
fire. The burning building w as a small
frame occupied by Christian Habagoz
and his wife, aged respectively 75 and
70 When an entrance was forced the
wife was found upon a bed, her throat
cut from ear to ear and the bed on fire.
The body was removed and search made
for the husband. The trap-door leading
to the garret was blocked, and entrance
was impossible, as that part of the
building was on fire also. When the
roof fell the charred body of the huB-
band was seen upon the garret floor.
The evidence brought out at the in
quest today was to the effect that Haba
goz was very eccentric and pacuiiar,
and subject to fits of insanity. At such
times be was a terror to the neighbors,
as he was known to keep two revolvers,
two muskets and knives about the
house, and had exhibited them when it
did not please him to have the neigh
bors call. He threatened them with
bodily harm if they interfered with his
affairs.
For several weeks Mrs. Habagoz has
been in feeble health, and he would per
mit no one to see her, not allowing even
a physician to attend her. He was in
one of his spells again Saturday, and
was heard to say that upon the death of
his wife he would shoot himself. Cir
cumstances point to the conclusion that
he cut bis wife’s throat, set tbe house

Among the incidents oonnected with
the removal of ex-President Davis’ re
mains from New Orleans to Richmond
for re-interment was the following re
marks made by Miss Winnie Davis,
“the Daughter of the Confederacy,” as
she sat in her oar in Atlanta Monday,
she said: —
“Yes, I remember with profound
pleasure the last time I was in Atlanta.
And the visit to Athens, too—I know I
shall not forget that reception to the
college boys. Those college boys—and
their sweet serenade on Milledge ave
nue that night, their jokes about the
Lucy Cobb girls—oh, no, you see i
haven’t forgotten tbe smallest little de
tail ot the trip.”
Jim Nolan, whom it is alleged at
tempted to criminally assault Miss Ella
Dobbe at Panola, a beautiful little cot
ton village, on last Friday, rested last
night bshind the diamonds of Clarke
county’s jail.
jNo’aa was run down and arrested
Monday night at the Piper Mills near
Princeton Factory by Mayor Hem-
rick and Marshal Kenedy of Princeton,
and Bailiff Reynolds. Ho was found at
the home of a relative and just prepar
ing to leave for the depot to oatoh a
train to leave the country.
The mayor and marshal saw the story
of Nolan’s alleged crime in the Consti
tution, and knowing that he had once
lived at Princeton and had relatives
there, they kept a look-out for him.
They heard that he had come to Prince
ton and had little difficulty in locating
him. When the officers first approach
ed Nolap he resisted arrest without a
warrant and advised the marshal and
mayor that they had no jurisdiction In
the case, and could not make the arrest.
One of the officers decided to stay with
the prisoner till tbe other went after
Bailiff Rey nolds to settle thematterof
jurisdiction and authority to, arrest
without a warrant.
MADS A DASH.
When Nolan saw the officer return
ing with Bailiff Reynolds he jumped out
of a window and ran for all he was
worth through the woods. As long as
he kept in the woods he proved too
fleet a sprinter for his pursuers, bull
when he took down the big road he
was Soon out-winded and captured.
BROUGHT TO THIS CITY.
The officers bound their prisoner and
brought him to tnis city at an early
hour yesterday morning for safe keep
ing. He was turned over to Sheriff
Wier who yesterday notified the au
thorities at Decatur the nearest town to
the scene of the crime.

TUB STORY OF THE CRIME.
The story of the crime as told by the
Newspapers of lasc Saturday is aa fol
lows : Nolan secreted himself in a se
cluded spot on the route Miss Dobbs,
who is said to be pretty and fascinat
ing, would have to travel from the cot
ton mill where she is employed to her
home, and as she passed alone he sprung
from his hiding place and grabbed her
by the throat. A terrible scuffis fol
lowed, the girl fighting desperately for
her liberty. Once she almost broke his
hold, but he renewed his attack and
forced her to the ground. She fought
more desperately. Nolan finally be
came alarmed, and knocked her over
and ran.
THE NEIGHBORS PURSUE.
Miss Dobbs notified the neighbors
and a posse pursued Nolan all night
and part of the next day, but could not
catch him.
He made his way here presumably to
get assistance from relatives to leave
the country.
NOLAN'S DIFFERENT STORY.
Nolan was seen at the jail yesterday
by a Banner reporter and talked freely.
He denied the story of the assault. He
said he slapped Miss Dobbs twioe, but
it was inher own home and in the pres-
euceof another girl. He stated that he
had lived in the same house with Miss
Dobbs for two years and intimated that
there had been a strong oase of love
existing between them.
Hesaidthe girl had heard that he,
was going to marry some one else and
t ist when he called on her that even
ing she jwas jealous and ordered him
oat of the house and when he refused
to go she slapped him in the face; he
returned the blow, and got still another
one for his second portion; at this he
gave her a stunner a.la Corbett style
that laid her ont and skipped out.
He said that the reason be skipped
was that he heard'the girl had report- '
ed that he had attempted to criminally
assault her and knowing he had ene
mies there and that be feared that her.
story would be believed and be would
be lynched.
Nolan is a rather good looking fel
low of fine physical construction about
28, but his face ts not at all prepossess
ing and is-against him.
