Topeka, May 80.—Th«f"long contin
ued drought in the southern central
portion of Kansas has been broken, and
the dry soil soaked by a rainfall much
greater than has been before experi
eneed in that section of the state for
more than a year.
Those who have faith in tho science
of rainmaking as advocated by Lieuten
ant Dyrenforth believe that the con
certed action of the people of Welling
ton, Winfield, Arkansas City, South
Haren, Caldwell. Hutchinson and New
ton in firing heavy explosives simulta
neously was the means of Securing the
relief which lias been obtained.
Mayor Savage, of Wellington, Origi
nated the idea. He consulted tho may
ors of all towns within a - radius of 30
miles concerning* his scheme, and while
they had little faith in his effectiveness
all agreed to assist him in his experi
ment.
Several days were required to perfect
arrangements. The state arsenal was
drawn uj>on. All of its cannons and
mortars and guns were' brought-into
requisition. Everything that could l>e
found in the country that would make
a noise and create smoke was brought
out and distributed over the section
which it was hoped would be benefited
by it. All of the boys and young men
who owned guns were induced to come
out. Tbe preparations became so gen
eral and elaborate that the country ap
peared to be having a Fourth of J uly
celebration.
At noon Thursday all was in readi
ness. Mayor Savage telegraphed his
lieutenants to begin the bombardment
of the heavens. For two hours the ex
plosives were discharged. The noise
created was terrific. Windows were
shattered and houses trembled on their
foundations.
Smoke clouds gathered in small
bodies. Then they united, and by 3
o’clock the sky over eight counties was
black and every indication of a rain
storm was visible. Soon water began
to fall. The precipitation steadily,in
creased, and the work begun bv man
was carried on by nature.
Many people scoff at the -idea that
Mayor Savage is responsible for Thurs
day’s storm, but the people of the eight
counties where the rain fell- who saw
and heard the bombardment believe
thoroughly jn the art of--fainmaking
During tliApast three days Adjutant
General Artz has j* ( ceived many letters
and telegrams fjxlmall sections of west
ern Kansas calling on him for the use
of cantionpewitli which to produce rain.
The apparent success of Thursday’s ex
periment has incited the people of every
town and city where the drought is un
broken to repeat the effort. The work
w T ill be resumed early in the week.
Saturday at Detroit, a little town in
Dickinson county, in lieu of cannon or
guns, the people procured four anvils
fr, -in the two village blacksmith shops
and commenced the burning of a large
amotint of powder. After about 20
volleys had been fired clouds begun to
gather over the village, and within an
hour dense clouds obscured the horizon
and shut out the sky in all directions.
In a few minutes rain began to fall, and
by sunset a half inch of rain had cov
ered an area of 20 miles square.
These experiences have had a dis
couraging effect on the chemical rain
makers of ■ western Kansas, who have
been- operating for a month without
success. The rainmakers reserve the
right to operate when they please, and
they invariably consult the predictions
of weather prophets before attempting
to bring down the moisture. Then
they go into a little cabin, run n stove
pipe through the roof and set fire to
certain chemicals.
If the bombardment with gunpowder
continne3 to prove Successful, as it did
in southern Kansas, it is believed "that
the people of the western part of the
state will employ that method exclu
sively in tire future.
GENERAL NEWS.
A tricky and nervy escape was made
from Richmond county gang Friday
night. Tom Gibson and Lee Mosely,
two negroes sent np for a short term,
grew tired of working for “vittles and
stripes” and so decided to vamoose.
They both played off sick and wereaent
to the poor home tor treatment. They
were very sick until the house bad
quieted down. Then they made their
plans for escape. Stealthily they stole
from their bed and reconnoitered. There
was no chance for them through the
corridors or windows which were barr
ed. The chimney, however, stood open
and climbing up through grime and
soot they reaohed the bouse top, from
whence they descended to the ground.
Their escape was not discovered until
morning and as yet their whereabouts
are unknown.
Macon Telegraph: Martha Dawes
was arrested Friday by Officers A. Gold
en and M. Jenkins for stealing lumber
from a new building that is being
e rected by Mr. Jenkins on Calhoun
street. When Martha was locked up
she asked parmission to send word to
her husband, who is employed at the
Georgia mills and elevator, to come to
see her. As the officers wanted her
husband, whose name is Jake, for the
same oflense, they gladly complied with
her request. The woman then sent
messenger to her husband, telling him
to come to her quickly, that she was in
trouble. It was not long before Jake
arrived and asked. Sargt Long if he
could see his wife. The sergeant told
him certainly, but that he would have
tc be searched before going into the
barracks. Tbe negro readily assented
and when the sergeant bad finished
setf'ching him he turned him into tbe
corrislor and then invited him into an
open cell. Jakewt first hesitated, but
then seemed to think that this wasonly
part of the red tape procedure of call
ing on prisoners, walked in. The ser
geant then looked the dGor and left
Jake to solve the problem for himself
and kick himself for being such a fool.
