She talked atom flirtation ^
As a harmless occupation
And the art of osculation
As a most familiar thing.
And she said she saw no reason
Why a maiden shouldn't “freeze on**
At the proper time each season
To a sparkling diamond ring.
She spoke of slang as “taking”
And the fellows she was "shaking”
And. my finer feelings raking.
Talked of men who “took the cake."
She lielievcd, -lie said, in drinking
And accompanied this by winking.
And 1 could not keep from thinking
What a dreadful wife she'd make.
Thus she gibbered without meaning.
While I sat. my feelings screening
And my cultured mind careening
And my heart surcharged with woe.
While in language un-zpected
She talke 1 on with mien dejected.
Alas! had I suspected
That siie wanted me to go!

One of the most estimable women In a
London suburb is subject to sudden faint?,
and hysterics and confidently expects some
day to die (luring oneof them. Several days
ago while sitting at her front window en
gaged in some light needlework conversing
with a neighbor, she felt one of the spells
coming over her. She called to her friend
to summon I)r. and then fan her. The
friend went for the family doctor, and in a
short time lie was at the house. Meanwhile
the sufferer was sure she was dying.
"Oh, Mrs. ,” she sobbed hysterically,
"I know 1 am going this time. Pm dying
now; I'm dying. Good by, Mrs. .”
The doctor at once began the application
of tiie usual restoratives, but they seemed
of no avail. The sufferer appeared to Ik-
gradually losing her breath, and the doctor
believed she was expiring, lie tore away
the niching about her neck and called to
her friend:
“Mrs. , take off her shoes, please.
We must enliven her ctrculat ion somehow.”
The doctor got her neck free enough, lint
when the friend lifted one foot to remove
the shoe, the sufferer kicked her friend’s
hands with the other foot. The doctor did
not notice this, hut thinking the friend
could not perhaps undo tiie buttons lie
reached down and picked up one of tiie pa
tieut’s feet. The sufferer, evidently in her
last gasps, kicked him also, but the doctor
was determined.
“Mrs. ,” he said, “your shoes are too
tight. They must come off.”
"Don't, doctor,” gurgled the patient.
“Don't, doctor. I’m dying.”
"I know it, Mrs. ," he said, “but those
shoes must come off.”
“Oh, no, doctor,” was the feeble pleading
“But I say yes,” answered tiie now fright
tned doctor, “ami I'll take them oil too.”
“Oil, doctor, please don't; please don't.”
“I'm sorry, .Airs. , but' 1
liaising herself with a powerful effort,
the patient, pale as dentil itself, gasped.
“Please don’t takeoff my shoes, doctor—
my stockings are full of holes.”
The effort seemed to bring hack the life
to the sufferer, and in half an hour siie was
as well as ever, with a new pair of stock
in, fully readv for the next “faint.”—
