SPLENDID WORK DONE-
The reports of the professors of
the night school in Savannah and
Atlanta show thst splendid work is
being done in those institutions.
They have not been in operation
long, but the experiment has proved
eminently successful in each case
Snchwchools give to the children of
the working classes and to children
who earn their own livelihood many
chances to acquire an education that
they wculd not otherwise get. Fre
quently the brightest minds in a
community are to be found among
that class of people and the only
thing necessary to be done is to give
them the proper training and they
become great and shining lights.
Such is the work of s night school.
Such a school would come in well
in Athens if proper arrangements
conld be made tor it, and whenever
the Boaid of Education sees fit to
enlarge or improve the school sys
tem of the city, it wonld be well for
that body to consider the establish
ment of a night school.
TRUE JEFFERSONIAN DEMOCRACY.
Gov. Hogg, of Texas, has brought
himself into mt'ce throughout the
Union by a remarkable veto he had
just made. The State of Texas owns
a large labor farm, worked by con
victs which produced last year about
a million pounds of sugar. The
Legislature passed an act authori
sing the Governor to apply to Con
gress for the bounty on this sugar,
which amounted to about $20,000.
The Governor promptly vetoed the
act on the ground that Congress Lad
no mote right to give Texas a bounty
on sugar than it had to give her a
bounty on chickens, and that Texas
needed no assistance in farming.
This is States rights sure enough,
and Hogg is receiving numerous
plaudits from Democrats everywhere
for his Jeffersonian Democracy.—

Taa Philadelphia Press, a republican
paper, admits the prevalence of lynch
ing at the north and says: “There is
no blinking the facts that lynching by
mobs is growing more common in the
north, and that there is as little dispo
sition to punish the perpetrators of
these outrages as there is in the south
Already, with the year less than half
gone, there have beta nearly as many
lynchings north of the Ohio river as
were recorded in the whole of 1892 —
People have been accustomed to look
upon .lynching as indigenous to the
south and far west. Tue condition of
society prevailing in those neighbor
hoods has been regarded aa especially
favorable to suoh outbreaks, and the
belief has been general that with the
advance of rt iinement and civilzition
these lawless acts would end. But the
experience of the past few months con

In Georgia Sanctums.
The Columbus Enquirer-Sun makes
the following level-headed remark
The people of Georgia would be glad to
see a start made in the way of shaking
out the neat of partisan Republicans
that infest the Atlanta custom house.
The Brunswick Times speaks sound
sense as follows: Those who talk
sgainst themselves. A wise man will
always speak in praise of his home pa
per, and consequently of home interests
in the same strain. Only fools and
sore-heads speak otherwise.
Savannah News: Gen. Mahone bis
taken no part in any of the great ex-
Confederate celebrations since bis
change of political affiliations. He de
clined an invitation to be present at the
unveiling of the B. S. Lee statue at
Richmond some time- ago, and he re
fused to attend the Davis exercises at
Richmond yesterday. Why be should
thus ent himself eff from his old asso
ciations cannot be understood, unless
bis conscience forbids him to mingle
with the people he sought to betraj in
to the bands of the republicans.
The Albany Herald has this sugges
tive political parsgrapn: The Atlanta
Herald warns its readers and the people
of Georgia that 'there are two distinct
efforts cn foot to organise opposing
factions to control Georgia politics.’ If
such a thing is now on foot the people
of the old Empire State will furnish the
feet later on.
The Houston Home Journal says:
Any role that allows s republican to
fill a Federal offloe now is wrong. Every
offlaisl duly under a democratic admin
istration should be performed by a dem
ocrat. It is miserable policy to give
official emolument and gain to a politi
cal enemy.
The BarnesviUe Gazette is after all
kinds of trades or oombiLations and
says: When the next session of the leg
islature meets, its members most re
member that the people of Georgia will
not tolerate this outrageous combina
tion or trading business. We think the

Involuntarily and by force of habit he ex

With a stifled sigh he waited until the
