The Southeastern Kansas Strike Was
Only a Starter for What Will Follow.
Topeka, June 5.—M. L. Walters,
president of the Kansas Miners’ Union,
has left for Osage, where he will organ
ize a strike in the coal mines of that dis
trict in sympathy with the strike in
Southeastern Kansas. When this dis
trict Ijr.s joined the fight there will be

Hill, Mo., and in conjunction with the
Missouri union, will arrange for the

5.000 more tnen to the fist of strikers.
This he expects to accomplish before
July 1.
In the meantime. President Howells,
of tha Colorado union, who has charge
of the mines of the Atchison, Topeka
and Saute Fe Railroad company, at
Trinidad, Canon City and Rockville,
has ordered out the 4,000 men now work
ing under his jurisdiction.
By July 1, President Walters says,
all of tliis work will have been accom
plished, and in round numbers there
will be 30,o00 miners out west of the
Mississippi river. There are 100,000
members in the union, and Walters ex
pects the remninii-g 70.000 to assist the
strikers in carrying on their fight. He
suys tho union can hold out for two
years.

tho mother of Carlyle W. Harris, the
recently executed murderer, has written
a letter to the press, dated at East
Nortlifield, Mass., Juno 8, In which she
announcing that her son’s book, written
in tho last days of his imprisonment, is
now ready for sale. She says that
many letters from sympathizers with
herself and her son continue to-ponr in
upon her. and that slier reads thorn all,
Sue employs capitals very freely in de
nouncing those who iqpre prominent in
the prosecution of Harris. “I have not
expressed all that I know,” she adds, ns
to the workings of the district attor
ney’s office, “because I was not allowed
to risk theirsuingniefor libel.” She will
prove Choate a perjurer, she says, “if
Mr. Nicholl will indict him.” Of the
book she remarks:
It has been compiled hurriedly, but I
hope it does him (Carlyle) justice. I
could not do justice toNicoll. Wellman;
Choate, Smythe and Flower, for which
I crave their indulgence. Such justice
I leave to an overruling providence. >

New York, June 5.—Dr. Senner,
commissioner of immigration, has re
ceived a letter from the mayor of Pala-
nicani, in Bohemia, concerning Matto
Modrie, a Croatian, who was rejected
at the immigration bureau. Modrie
was rejected on the ground that he was
a professional beggar. The mayor’s
letter, however, states that Modrie is a
man of some wealth and would become
a desirable citizen if allowed to land.
