Dr. Edward MoGlyun had sailed for
Rome in apocryphal steamers, it is
known by his closest friends that he is
in retreat in the Truppist monastery,
near Lexington, Ky., And that he will
stay there some time, probably all the
summer, doing penance-
Dr. McGlynn, in many of his Cooper
Union lecture», declared he would
never go to Rome- in sackcloth and
ashes, and it is said that the retreat is
in the nature of a compromise sug
gested by MgT. Satolli, and agreed to by
l)r. McGlynn after a consultation with
his fii nds. After the retreat he will
have been purged, and then he may go
to Rome, not as a penitent seeking for
giveness, hut as a priest with all his
rights.

One of the Miner** Sentenced.
Knoxville, Tenn., June 7.—D. B.
Monroe, one of the miners in the Coal
Creek war last August, was sentenced
at Clinton to the penitentiary for seven
yeurs. The sentence is light but the
people are satisfied.

A Cowardly Count’s Conduct.
Vienna, June 7.—Count Zdenko Kin-
shy, owner of sundry race iiorscs, quar
reled with his trainer at the race court. -.
The,count was on lioreback, and in his
fury he drove the animal at him, the
horse knocking tho trainer down and
tramping upon him. After tho horse
hail passed over the prostrate trainer
the count wheeled about and again rode
over him. The trainer was very seri
ously injured.

New York for $50,000, the amount of
Defaulting Treasurer O’Brien’s bond,
resulted in a verdict for $15,790 for the
knights. This was the amount, which
was stolen, between the last examina
tion by tlie knights of O'Brien's books
and tho discovery of his shortage.
