CmCAOO.’June -7.—Euialie, the mod
est little princess of Spain’s royal bouse
is in Chicago, and thousands of people
from every state in the union and al
most every country on the face of the
earth were at the train eager to see her
and give her a Democratic welcome to
a truly Democratic city, and the eager
thousands who saw her saw a modest
dark eyed little woman of flesh and
blood; a human being like themselves.
The infanta came into the city on a
special train over the Pennsylvania
railroad and disembarked at the union
depot. *.
Mayor Harrison received her as one
of Chicago’s World’s Fair guests and
extended to her the hospitality of the
city. Formality was minimized. Chi
cago’s chief executive did the honors,
while whistles blew and the crowd
cheered. There was a great bnstle and
noise at the depot. Trains were rush
ing past and orders were Bhonted. At
12:10 a Pennsylvania train, drawn by
engine 115, rushed into the train shed,
the engineer waving his cap. It came
to a stop and for a second there was an
anxions silence. A little gronp, headed
by Mayor Harrison, stepped forward to
the rear platform of the train, when a
pretty woman, modestly dressed,
stepped on the platform' and smiled.
Then came cheers. The crowd beyond
the railings caught the hurrah, ana like
a lighted train of gunpowder it shot up
into the street, and tugboats on the river
canght the infection and added their
high pressure voices to the welcome.
Every man in the crowd removed his
hat and there was a little flurry in the
party aronnd the princess.
Then the mayor stepped forward, the
princess extended her hand and Mr.
Harrison, bending over it, like a true

tions became general. When the -hand
shaking—for the princess has adopted
the American manner—was over, the
mayor offered her his- nrm, and passing
between the lines of aldermen and city
officigls. conducted her up the carpeted
stairs to the carriage in waiting, cheers
marking every stsp. Bertha H. Palm
er’s handsome carriage, which was
used to convey President Cleveland
when here at the opening of the exposi
tion, was in’ waiting. As the princess
emerged from the depot, the ringing
notes of a bugle were heard, followed
by the clank of swords and troops B.
and K, of the famons Seventhcavalry,
commanded by General Baldwin, stood
at general attention.”
The long line of yellow plnmed horses
extended for a block. Again the bngle
sounded and the flashing swords came
to “present.” These maneuvers canght
the lady’s eyes, and she glanced up and
down the lines before entering the car
riage. All this time the command was
cheering. Led by the military escort
and followed by the other carriages
containing the infanta’s suite, the re
ception committee and city officials and
the infanta started for the Palmer house.
"There was a royal scene at the Pal
mer house when the troops of the yel
low plumed regulars of the Seventh
Cavalry appeared opposite the ladies’
entrance, escorting the princess’ car
riage, in which she rode with her hus
band, Prince Antoine, while Mayor
Harrison occupied the front seat. As
far as the eye could reach, east and
west, there extended a mighty crowd,
all eager to catch a glimpse, be it ever
so slight, of the Infanta, or some of her
party. The portico of the hotel was
decorated with the Spanish and Ameri
ean colors and thiok «red Brussels tar-
pet extended to the edge of the i
walk. As the princess alighted and
once more placed her arm in that of the
mayor, the crowd vented its admiration
in cheers.

Writes a Reply to the Card of Hon, H.
C.Tuck.
Kdhor Banner: In your issue of
May 30th in an article written and
signed by Hon. H. C. Tuck, of Athens,
G»., I am referred to and prevented, to
say the least, in a very improper light
and manner.
The artiole in question refers to me
by name as one of an armed band of
midnight marauders, without authority
of law, as having aided in the arrest of
one George Clarke, an innocent negro
living in Puryear’s district of Clarke
county.
I have this to say: I am a deputy
sheriff c-f Oglethorpe county, under
bond for the faithful discharge of my
duty. I had reliable and trust-worthy
information that George Clarke was
wanted in Elbert county, a warrant
having been issued for his arrest and a
reward offered for his apprehension and
delivery in Elbert county. In pnnu-
ance oT this it. formation I summoned a
posse of men to accompany me to where
I had reason to believe I would find
George Clarke. * I found said George
Clarke, arrested him and turned him
over to the proper authorities of Elbert
county.
George Clarke was treated kindly
while in my custody. He was not mis
treated in being arrested. 1 summoned
a posse of men to aid me in order to
< fleet the arreat peaceably. Tne law
did not require warrants to be planed
in the bands of an e ffloer of Clarke
county in order to effect the arrest of
George Clarke. As an officer, I had the
right to go into Clarke county and make
the arrest; this Mr. Took and every
other intelligent person knows to be
the law. I had, and have nothing to do
with the merits of any case against thia
negro.
As to any treatment this negro re
ceived in Elbert county .after he was
discharged from the custody of the law
under bond, I bad nothing whatever to
do, I had left the oounty and returned
home several days previous to the time
when the negro was said to have re
ceived rough treatment.
- I h-d no Intention of molesting or in
any way interfering with the good and
law-abiding people of P ary ears dis
trict, either white or black. I had
nothing whatever to do with any pre*
vioin arrests which may have been made
in Puryears district. In making this
arrest I meant no r* flection upon the
sheriff or officers of Clarke county.
I do not believe the time has yet come
when the arrest of a person charged
with the commission of crime esn be
held np to the fcorn and contempt of
the country.
I am sure the great mass of intelligent
and law-abiding citizens of Clarke
county do not feel themselves insulted
by reason of this arrest. Every officer
and intelligent citizen knows that cer
tain classes of criminals can only he
captured and arrested in the night
time.
J, as well as Mr. Tuck’s other friends,
am surprised to see him tush into print
and endeavor to make a mountain out
of a mole bill.
As long as I bold the r fflee of deputy
sheriff 1 shall endeavor to execute the
law as I understand it.
Respectfully,
G. J. Cunningham
