Washington, June 9.—-The top floor
cf the old Ford Opera House, in which
Lincoln was assassinated and which
was occupied by the government, fell
in, carrying two floors with it. There
were about 500 clerks in the building.
The first floor collnpsed through weak
ness caused by excavating the cellar,
and in the fall carried down the other
three floors and with them hundreds of
clerks.
The dead and wounded are being
taken out as rapidly as possible by the
firemon and polico. All tho ambulances
in the city have been summoned, and
the rescued are being conveyed to the
hospitals. The scenes are terrible.
Some jumped from the third floor.
The walls are still standing, but
•very floor is down and every window
blown out.
Washington, June 9.—Tho old Ford
Opera House had been condemned as
unsafe and nnsitable for tho purpose for
which it was occupied for sometime,
but sontiment has kept it unchanged.
The floors wore heavily loaded with the
records of tho records and pensions di
vision of tho war department. The
clerks employed there were all men.
There were over 400 clerks in the
building. Scarcely one has escaped
more or less injury. The Emergency
hospital is crowded with the dead and
injured. The injuries, from the very
nature of the accident, are of the sever
est character, crashed and broken limbs
end internal injuries prevailing.
The excitement of the relatives-, and
friends is naturally intense. Thousands
are surrounding tho scene, and the ex
citement has spread all over the city.
Troops Orilorod to tho Scoiio.
General Schofield has ordered two
troops of cavalry from Ft. Meyer, just

there was bat one crash heard, and in

with lime dnst.
Running directly through all of the
floors and in the middle of the building
was a light shaft, 10 feet or more long
and nearly as many wide. The fatal

Others, who were walking across the

stopped at the very threshold of death.
When the crash came, those who sur

from their comrades as they sank
out of sight, and then groping in the
darkness they found their way to safe
ty, trembling in every joint, with the
pallor of the dead in their faces. No
women were employed in the building,
but a few minutes after the crash the
wives, mothers and daughters of the
victims began to arrive.

Georgians,
Washington, D.C., June 9—[Spe
cial.]—If there is a man in Georgia
whose services to the Democratic party
entitles him to eminent recognition at
the hands of the party, it is Hon. W
Y. Atkinson, chairman of the State
Democratic executive committee.
And his claims are being pushed here
for all they ore worth, while the gen
eral opinion is thst a nice tst plum will
fall to his lot. He has been here but
has said little; sawing wood, saying
nothing, bat wearing a get there look.
He is being-poshed forward for Ber

would moke a striking success. Mr.
Clevelsnd has not forgotten Atkinson’s
good work in the last campaign when
the Third party was kicking up such a
fats down in Georgia, and he is goirg
to put him iu a snug berth.
So you osn mark down Atkinson ss a
deed sure winner of something worthy
of the man he is.
President Clevelsnd is stack on the
Georgia Colonels anyhow and doesn’t
mind saying so. He compliments them
on all hands and always speaks to his
friends of their signal ability.
He hes words of cheer for all Geor
gians and especially for thoae in A'.ta

Clsssio City.
In speaking to a prominent oitisen of
Athens today he said: “Go bock to
