SHOULD BE APPOINT ED.
The pres* is mentioning the name
of Hon. H. H. Carlton, ot Athens,
• in connection with the appointment
of a successor of General Rosecrans
a* Register of the Treasury. While
Capt. Cirlton d ies not pose in the
attitude of a candidate for the office,
still he would accept it if tendered
him, and upon none more worthy
could it be conferred. Capt. Carlton
by reason of his service for two
terms in Congre*} is thoroughly con
versant with notional affaiis and
would fill the office most acceptably.
It oan be said without fear of con»
tradiction that the office could not
fall to ths lot of a more thorough
and consistent Democrat than Capt
Carlton, and his appointment would
give eminent satisfaction,
SBALM IN GILEAD*
We wanted Tom Gibson, of the
Augusta Evening News, to get that
consulate for which he was applying.
We wanted him to succeed in his
endeavors txc vuse he is a journalist,
a democrat, and a gentleman, whose
ability is unquestioned.
But he didn’t get there and of
cones is to be kept in Augusta some
time yet There is consolation
the fac\ however, that Editor Gib
son is to remain here at home, where
his friends will be ab'.e to follow the
pathway of his BcinUllating paa-ftmf
drink in pleasure^andr"instruction
from the editorial fountain of his
~~~ bright-paper.
There is a balm in Gilead, even
for Editor GibsoD, to know that
though defeated he brings back to
Ge >rgia more than any of the other
Georgia Colonels who didn’t get
there.
Editor Gibson kissed Baby Ruth,
and if he didn’t get the consulate he
was after, he stole a kiss that ought
to pay him for his trouble.
allowed to serve out his senten
penitentiary instead of being hung.
Got. Nortben’s next manifesto will be
a lynching proclamation.
Barky Hill baa suddenly dropped
out of public notice to a large extent.
Murderer’s Cell” seems to have some
what quieted him down.
Editor Stovall writes more fluently
of Northeast Georgia than he does of
free silver or* the Australian ballot. But
then it mu it be remembered that in
writing of this section of Georgia he has
forasubject the garden spot of the
world.
A mam da Dicxjow, the richest negro
in the world, worth about half a million
dollars, died at Augusta Suoday. She
was the legatee of David Dickson, of
Georgia, and the oelebrated Dickson
win ease is known to all onr people.
Ths papers all over' the country are
bitting some hard raps at the officials
about the negligence shown in allowing
such a rickety old building as the old
Ford Theatre to be used as it was.
They as a rule hold the government di
rect!} responsible for the deaths and in
juries caused by the falUng of the build'
ing.
Few persons, probably, are aware
that a brother survives Edwin Booth.
But such Is the fact. Dr. Joseph A.
Booth; son of Junius Bratus Booth and
Mary Ann Holmes Booth, was born in
Baltimore and studied medicine at the
at the South Carolina Medical College,
Charleston, finishing his oourse at the
University of New York after the war.
At the breaking out of the war Dr.
Booth was at the college in Charleston.
He is at present practicing his profes
sion and lecturing on surgery in New
York. It is said that his talents are in
lines wholly different from those of the
other members of this famous family.
A Failure For Her.
BLOWING HIS OWN HORN.
Editor Oraig devoted his entire
editorisl space last week to a lame
attempt to prove the Editor of The
Banner a journalistic noodle and to
the very successful attempt of prais
ing his own efforts in very laudatory
terms.
His article, devoted almost entirely
to sarcastio rhetoric, was - without
sense or meaning, calls for no reply
at our hands, and deserves no fur
ther notice than to say that Editor
Craig 'has been at his old tricks
again, blowing his own horn and
slinging ink ia his own peculiar
muddy style.
Editor Craig denies being in Geor
gia and taking part in the Speer-
Candier campaign, saying that hi
was in favor of Candler. We do Ed
itor Craig the justice to say that
upon investigation we find that he
was ^Washington at the time serv
ing in’an offlie procured him by
Emory Speer, and also that he was
in favor of Allen D. Candler, but
that our mistake was simply as to
the date ot his political regeneration
which occurred a little earlier than
wo were informed. Perhaps Editor
Craig will deny having ever voted
for and supported Speer and Inde-
pendentism in preference to De-
The Savannah Press in commenting
upon the question of state bank;, says
“And yet the number of state banks is
vastly greater than the national banks
In Atlanta, for instance, there is but
one national bank, with a capital of
400.000, The state banks there have a
combined capital of $4,000,000. The
state banks in Georgia are numerous
and sound. Recent failures have in
volved as many national bat.ks as state
banka It would seem that such insti
tutions, under proper guarantees from
the state or country posibly on the line
of the Horaoe White plan submitted
yesterday, should be ableto .float good
bills and plenty of them.
The state bank question is one that
will grow. Under the present national
bank restriction it is important that
congress perfect some legislation on
this point.”
The Oglethorpe Bcho says: A ornsade
is being begun a morg Georgia paper
■gainst Sunday papers. The work on
Sunday papers is done Saturday. It’s
the Monday morning papers, brethren,
upon whioh you should level your guns
—if they should be leveled at alL
The Macon Telegraph very propely
says: The proposition made by the
Kolb executive committee to the Dem
ocratic executive committee of Ala
bama, that a primary at which all white
men should be allowed to vote be held
next spring to nominate the candidates
of the Democratic party, has been, re
jected. We fear veiy much that last
year’s division will prove to be perma
nent, but it ia certainly better to boldly
face the prospect that it will be and by
a wise conic rvatiem seek to reduce its
importance than to surrender the or
ganization of the party to its bitterest
enemies and abandon its principles.
The Maoon Evening News says of the
recent banker’s convention: The ban
kers of Georgia in convention assem
bled at Savannah pronounced in favor
of the repeal of the Sherman sot. They
also opposed the further coinage of sil
ver at the present ratio bat they are in
favor of the free coinage of silver in
dollars worth 100 eents.
The Georgia bankers are In line with
the Democratic party. They want
circulating medium that ia worth its
fsoe value. They want a silver dollar
that is of the same value as a dollar in
gold. They favor sound money , as the
basis of sound business. They want
the foundation to be sound to insure
safe superstructure.
I bare not counted time, my dear,
Sinco first my soul drank thine.
What hour flies or what is near,
Since that long kiss was mine.
I live in an enchanted land
Where night was never known.
Where Happiness, in chief command.
Rules all with an indulgent hand.
And Care has lost his throne.
Ail moments Are alike to me
Since Fatc.jrelenting, sent
A common joy to me and thee—
A joy I thought could never be
For weary mortals meant.
It may have been but yesterday.
Perhaps a year ago.
Or mayhap, long, long ages may
Have passed us on their endless way—
I may not, cannot know.
All that I knew I have unknown
And learned my life anew;
I know not even—so 'tis shown—
