The Paris newspapers have made con
tradictory statements as to the acoi-
dent, Fiagaro making light of it, the
Ganlois and seyeral others declaring
that Mr. Bennett had received an al
most mortal wound. The truth, as
usual, lies between the extremes.
The facto are these:
Mr. Bennett was driving his four-in-
hand coach into the entrance to the
npartmenflbouse in which he lives. On

broad iron step of the coach. This
both wonnded him and broke the
furhtsr fall. He kept hia piesence
of mind and, putting out bis hands,
saved himself from further injury.
Baron Gonrgaud fell also, but did
not injure himself.
The doctors found a large and very
ugly contusion on th® left side of the
abdomen. Taking the circumstances
with the appearance of- the bruise'they
decided it best to open the abdominal
cavity to see whether the intestines
were injured.
Before the operation Mr. Bennett ask
ed Dr. Robin to tell him his true situa
tion, as he wished to be prepared if he
was tadie. Dr. Robin tola him that
his condition was grave. Mr. Bennett
called for his will, made some additions
to it, then saidTery calmly that he was
ready.
After Mr. Bennett had been put un
der amesthetic influence, Dr. Ledentu
made an incision into the abdominal
cavity and found that his fears were
not realized, as the intestines were
neither cut nor bruised. The operation
took about an hoar and a half.
After sewing up the incision Dr. Le
dentu left Dr Robin to watch the re
sults. In a cliort time Mr. Benuett was
sleeping quietly, with temperature' and
pulse far better than had been expected.
No one is allowed to see either Mr.
Bennett or those attending him.
Dr. Robin has taken up his residence
with l^is patient, as have two of Mr.
Bennett’s assistants in conducting the
Paris Herald.
Dr. Ledentu says Mr. Bennett will be
able to get away from Paris to a resort
for invalids in less than a month if he
obeys orders and keeps perfectly quiet.
