Bow Be Became a Freemason.
The goat, the goat, tlur bearded goat.
The horned, the hoofed, the hairy goat;
As I’m a sinner of some note.
This night I rode the Masonic goat.
He was a beast of wondrous size.
With lengthened limbs and glassy eyes.
And beard that swept the carpet clear.
And horns that touched the chandelier.
Ye gods! if there’s a time we feel
Misgivings through our noddle steal.
TU when we through the mysteries float
Upon the dark Freemasons' goat.
Three times was I compelled to ride
The beast around tbe temple wide.
And when 1 tried the fearful mount
My heart's pulsations all could count.
Twice did 1 make the circuit fair,'
With hold on horns, on tall and hair.
Till on the third attempt and last.
When I presumed all danger past.
He pitched me clear off horns and head
And left me far below for dead.
But when 1 rose with courage frail
The goat had vanished, head and tall.
And I was styled by one and all
The liveliest Mason in the Ur.ll.

A WORD TO ATHENIANS-
The Banner is for Athena above
all things, wedded to her interests,
her prosperity and her glory.
Far be it from this paper to otter
one sonleace derogatory to Athens or
her environments, but there are cer
tain conditions existing here that
demand public attention, and there
is no use mincing matters in reach
ing the point.
There is throughout the South a
general business and industrial
lethargy, whisk threatens to para
lyze every organ and artery of trade
and development, and while affecting
Athens possibly no more than Ler
sitter cities, still is present here, and
to overcome if, a speedy remedy
must be applied.
Athens is one of the most beauti
ful and Old-favored cities iu the
Siutb. the educational and literary
capital of the Gulf States, the petted
and envied centre of the Empire
S a c of the South, the social me
tropolis of th i S ate, filled with mags
jufiee it c lurch edifices, and blessed
with cultivated and eloquent minis-
tere—the heart of one of the richest
sections of Georgia, fed and fattened
w.th a system of railways second to
none, proud in her history and rich
in her traditions ; and yet there is
something necessary to make every**
porously. Every citizen realizes that
snch is a fact, and the next thing to
do is to get together and remedy the
evil. - *
1. is true that since thb unusual
aotivity of a few months sgo, At
lanta, Macon and other cities have
been praotically at a stand still, but
the wise and progressive spirits of
those cities have taken' the bull by
the horns and propose to enact a
change. The Mayor of Atlanta has
just called the leading and wealth-
ieat citizens in that city together
and organized a sort of industrial
congress or council, and it has as
sumed permanent form, as a cot*
operative company, representing eve-
ry class of citizens and drawing its
means from every sonree for the
purpose of raising money to build,
promote and foster industries, and it
will suoeeed. And the benefits ac
cruing from i's success will be worth
millions of dollars to Atlanta. Ma
con has started a similar movement.
Now what does Athens propose to
do ? She is ia just as good a condi
tion as any of them, but will not be
so six months from now if they do
everything and she does nothing.
L t’s get tog it her, have an under
standing and go to work. Let the
old croakers quit standing around
and gossiping about the scandafe of
their neighbors or abusTng their
newspaper and everything else under
tin sun. It is as impossible to have
a live paper without a live town as it
is to fly without wings.
Th* Banner will lead if you will
follow aud will rattle the drum of
business and scare the germs of pro
gress oat of their last year’s beds
and literally make the welkin ring.
There can bo and there must be a
waking up in Athens. Let’s have a
grand buainessrevival—let the trow
el lead the music, wheels, hammer
and saw arry the ohorus, and make
these oil hills echo back the laugh
ter of happiness and prosperity.
Let’s build some factories, large oi
small—enough of them will accom-11
