Palmer had ar
ranged it and the invitations were is-
eued in their names.
Mrs. Palmer’s entertainment was one
of the most important ever given in
Chicago. It was intended that the
cream of society should mo6t the in
fanta. This was the only opportunity
for many of them to do so, for no other
large entertainment has been arranged
in honor of the princess at a private
house in Chicago. Mrs. Palmer is re
garded as the social leader of this city.
She is a brilliant and intellectual t^p-
man and Chicago is very proud of her.
The reception had boon fixed for 9
o’clock. At that time all the guests—
about 700 in number—except the infanta
and her party were present. At that
hour Eulalie was resting placidly in her
rooms at the Palmer House.
Vice President Stevenson
had just arrived nt the hotel from
Bloomington, Ills. The Infanta heard
of it, ana said she wanted to see Mr.
Stephenson. She ordered Commander
Davis to bring him up. The command
er took him into the parlor, where he
chatted several minutes with the prin
cess. Meanwhile the guests at Mrs.
Palmer's mansion on the north side
were waiting impatiently.
When her conversation with the vice
president was finished the infanta re
tired to prepare for the reception. At
0:80 she was ready to start to Mrs.
Palmer’s. Her carriage was waiting at
the door. It was raining and one of
the negro porters of the hotel stood at
the door with an enormous umbrella,
which he expected to hold over Eulalie’s
head as she crossed the sidewalk. The
street was running with water and tne
mud was deep. The infanta looked at
the sidewalk a moment, stamped her
foot and said: “I will not go!
**Ilack Acaln! Hack to My Room!**
“Why, the guests are waiting,” pro
tested Prince Antonio.
“No, no, nol We cannot go!” ex
claimed the princess. “Why, look at
my dress!” Sue wore white shoes and
a costume that might easily have been
ruined by mud and water.
But the prince urged her to think of
the hostess and the guests. Mr. Waite,
the chief clerk of the hotel, snatched
the big umbrella out of the porter’s
hand and advanced with it towards Eu
lalie. The princess told -him to go
away, and demanded that she be taken
back to her room.
The prince yielded, but when he tried
