THEY CHARGED MURDER,
Washington, Jnne 18.—A writ of
mandamus has been served by the su
preme court of the District of Columbia
on the application of Colonel Ains
worth, directing the deputy coroner to
show cause why a pre-emptory writ of
mandamus should not issue against him
continuing further proceedings in the
inqnest over the remains of the victims
of the old theater disaster.
An ngly row was barely averted dur
ing the opening of the inqnest when
some of the witnesses made grave
charges against Ainsworth in connec
tion with the disaster. He was charged
with being responsible for the collapse,
and it was claimed that men were
afraid to make complaints, although
they knew of the danger, because they
believed it would cost them their posi
tions.
When a brother of one of the victims
appeared on' the floor, and in the pres
ence of the coroneris jury, charged
Ainsworth with the murder of his
brother, the.scene became riotous, and
loudcalls of,“Hang him!” “Hang him!”
were made, and a general move on the
part of a large body of employes was
made toward the spot where Ainsworth
