THE FAULT YOURS*
If Athens lags and does not march
proudly onward, folly abreast of the
procession of progress, it will be the
Isnlt of her citizens, and not her
natural advantages and environ
ments.
She is favored and endowed far
beyond the portion of bat few if any
citiea in the country.
Then shall we profit by our ad
vantages, or shall we stand around,
grumble.and snarl, while onr neigh
bors march smilingly on the high
road of development and prosperity?
The people of this town are respon
■ible for which of these two condi
tions we adopt.
With the proprr public spirit and
the proper utilization of the surplus
money around A-hens, and the right
sort of an invitation to outride peo
ple and money, within a few months
onr city conld be made to bloom and
flourish like the meadows in May.
New li’e could be infosed into her
commercial interests, new places of
profitable employment created for
those of her people that are suffer
ing now /or paying employment, the
rosters of her schools would be in
creased,the attendance to her church
es would be added to ,and her pro
ductive capacity wonld rise far above'
that ot her consuming source.
Her people would be cheerful,hap.
py and prosperous. This is withont
doubt a situation easily within onr
reach.
$3 000 will bny the machinery for
a knitting mill that will employ 40
womea and girls and 5 men.
The products of this mill wonld
be stapf^ and would bring at least
1160 per day to the faotcry
fountain source for distribution and
circulation in Athens business chan
nelr.
$2500 will buy the machinery for
a faotory to make spokes, hubs, sin
gle trees and handies that will em«
ploy 30 hands and tarn oat useful
products for home consumption, and
bearing a big profi 4 , bringing over
$2000 a month from outside sources
to Athens.
$2,100 will buy the machinery for
a manufactory for light furniture
that will employ 25 hands at good
salaries, make goods bearing a large
margin, and for which a profitable
home market is always available.
Here it is evident that for $7,600
the machinery can be purchased for
three factories that will employ alto
gether not less than 126 hands at
good salaries, and manufacture
class of goods for whioh there is al
ways a ready sale and a heavy profit
Let somebody get a hustle on them
and do something. Let the merch
ants and the banks lend a helping
hand. It is their duty, for if they
expect support from the people, they
most help support the people.
A TIMS TO ECONOMIZE.
This is not only a time for oiir
people to economize, but is beyond
doubt the time for the City Fathers
to look well to eoonomy. It cannot
e denied that through the litigation
in New York, rendered necessary by
financial mismanagement, an ex
pense of considerable amount is pil-
ing up. This expense will have to
be met and there is but cne place

ON THE SITUATION.
DEAFNESS CANNOT IE CUBED
By local applications, as they cannot
reach the diseased portion of the ear.
There is only one way to core Deafness
and that is by constitutional remedies.
Deafness is caused by an inflamed con-
and that is the pockets of the people.
If there are expenses in city govern.
■ meat that are not pressing for pay-
ment, if there are proposed improve
ments that can be let alone for the
while, the City Fathers would do
we 1 to cut off such expenses anti]
favorable times. And there
are some expenses that might bere-
duced and some that might be done
^tway with.

The Augusta Evening Ncwb very
properly says that*The clerks who es
caped from the old Ford death trap,
and the people of Washington generally,
are making it warm for Col. Ains
worth, who was in oharge of the clerks
in the wrecked Pension Department.
In the coroner’s inquest the clerks tes
tify to their absolute fear of Ainsworth
and say they wonld have protested
against the unsafe building but for fear
of discharge. They claim that Ains
worth knew the condition of the build
ing and they hold him responsible. He
came near being mobbed and lynched
yesterday, and a big indignation meet
ing of clerks denounced him roundly.
A committee will also call on the Pres
ident to express this sentiment and ask
Col. Ainsworth’s suspension.
-If responsibility is fixed on Col.
Ainsworth he should be dealt with un
sparingly, and Secretary of War La-
mont promptly and propeily deolares
that no employe is in danger of losing
his place for testifying in this case.”

The Atlanta Ccnstitntion ia looking
on the bright side of affairs. It says:
“When everything is considered it
most be said that the South has good
reason to rejoice over the outlook. Our
people cannot possibly suffer from any
speculative panio, and their eoonomy,
forced upon them by the depression of
the pagt two yean, has placed them in
a position where they can more than
hold their own.
We may look for good times from
now on, and better times when the ex

ed by catarrh, which is nothing but an
inflamed condition of the mucous sur

Finance* Discussed In au Editorial la tha
Denver Herald.
Denver, June 14.—In an editorial on
the financial situation, The Times re
fers to the withdrawal of western loans
daring the past three years, and says
“What became pf ail those millions
thus recalled from investment in west
ern farm loans? There was no where
for them to go except it. industrial
stocks, and they did go into them in
hundreds of millions. Now the colossal
swindlers have at last collapsed.
“This money withdrawn from west
ern farms and lost in industrial stocks
is still in existence. It is in the hands
of financiers who sold those stocks and
it is idle. It will not go into railroad
stocks. It will not go back into indus
trials. It cannot go abroad. There is
no place else in the world for it to go to
find profitable investment except to re
turn to farm loans and to invest in
western mines and irrigating ditches.
The whole financial situation, there
fore, points to an early revival of pros-
rerity in the west. Nothing else is pos
sible.”
