Tk« Southern Bailway awl Steamship As-
soclat inn Mat th Sow York.
New York, Jure 16.—.The animal
.meeting ol the Southern Railway and
Steamship association was continued at
the Fifth Avenue hotel, the session be
ginning at 10 o’clock.
The discussion over a new argreement
was immediately begun. The various
roads did not agree to sign the docu
ment with the alacrity tuat had been
anticipated.
The subcommittee, which was aj£
pointed to act on the matter of the new
agreement, reported “no progress.’'
asked and that the'matter ho referral
hack to the meeting and that the com
mittee be discharged.
At noon the discussion was still going
.on, no action having been taken.
There has been a general cutting ot
rates hv the various roads, and there i.-
a clause in the new agreement for tht'
purpose of putting an end to the prac
tice.
Few of the roads have been able to
resist the temptation to thus secure bus
iness that would otherwise go to rival
roads, and strong opposition has been
developed against the changing of tht
old agreement in this particular.
It is this clause in the new agreement
that has made trouble and the execu-
tiv’er board and board of adjusters have
. been unable to smooth matters over.
| The meeting adjourned until the llth
of July at Manhattan beach.

Cihcaoo, June 16.'—German day at

It was welcomed by a melodious chim

Berlin, June 14.—The election re
turns from the agricultural districts
and small towns come in slowly. In
most of these constituencies however,
few seats are likely to change parties.
At noon the government candidates
had apparently lost slightly in constit
uencies which chose deputies on the
first ballot. On the other band, in the
aecond ballot, which now 'seems inevi
table in some 100 ^ or 125 districts, the
government has exceptional opportuni
ties to win many seats.
This is especially applicable to the
iaata contested by the radical Unionists
who, in the last reichstug. voted against
the army bill, but supported it on the

a somewhat modified form. These were
expected to return to parliament with
• delegation reduced from;4U to about
80; but it is now contended that they
will have, at the fewest, 86 members
after the second ballots.
The reichscag Radicals will have
hardly more. So*"Tar their* fuilnre to
draw opposition votoshus been tho most
surprising feature of the election.
The Social Democrats boast that they
will have 50 seats after tho rehallots.
This is ahont the number conceded
them before the election.
The Conservatives ure likely to hold
their own. The number of liberal
Clericals in the next reichstug, although
in doubt, is expelled to approach 10.
