MOTHER’S FRIEND
THE GREATEST SOOTHERS SYSTEM.
Editob Plkasont A St-Vall, of the
Savannah Press, delivered a capiUl
addreee at the reoent commencement of
the Middle Georgia Military and Ag
ricultural eollegeat Milledg ville. The
I orator made an eloquent plea for a
distinctive southern literature. In the
course of his remarks be said:
“The great lack in the life of Henry
Grady, who wrote with a graphic
charm few people could imitate, and
who spoke with a ring and sweetness
of the best orators, was that his prom-

might have written a famous novel.
I Possibly be would have made it a his
torical novel where southern soenes
and character might have been sketch
ed with the mastery that Sir Walter
Scott lined the Scotch sunset of Ben
I Lomond, and the Scotch lassie of Mid
lothian. I have often regretted that
Grady, who did such work for the press

field of old romance.”
A New Yobk paper which is strug-

journals as it deigns to quote, has this
to say of Gan, Gordon’s coming ad

“Gen. Gordon has peculiar qualifica
tions for this task and will bring to it
not oly a fond of reminiscence of a pe
culiar valuable nature but also the
warm-hearted, chivalric spirit of the
true soldier who quit fighting when
the war was over. It is related of him
I that at the time of the surrender, while
other and less brave and able confeder

spirit of hostility to the north. Gen.

for less than $1.25, and I only hope they’ll
have some more of It tonight.”
“Well, this may be what you call the old
French quarter of the town,” observes one
of the two addressed, “and it may be very
quaint and picturesque, but I tell you it
smells very queer here, and, moreover, I
don’t see why they don’t bring on that din
ner.”
And then Fritz, the waiter, holds a mys
terious conference with M. Coquillard, who
has returned despondently to the kitchen*
goes out into the middle of the street,
shades his eyes as he gazes intently in an
easterly direction, and then returns to the
proprietor, shaking his head sadly.
Evidently there is no sail on the horizon.
Another whispered conference, and a tu
reen of soup and three plates are passed
through the aperture In the wall and placed
by Fritz in front of the three guests. Hav
ing dqne this, he once more goes out in the
middle of the street and scans the horizon.
“Now we’re off!” cried the gentleman
who .seems to be acting as host as he serves
tliethin but fragrant mess to his friends.
They eat it in silence, and then, the dishes
having been removed, there is another long
wait. Once more Fritz goes out into into
the middle of the street, but this time he
returns with a face beaming with anima
tion and whispers some joyful tidings to
bis cmrJoyer. A few moments later a
wagon stops before.the door, and under the
superintendence of M. Coquillard a large
cask is carried rapidly through a side
hall to the kitchen. A small hoy, evidently
an attache of the place, now comes forward
at the signal of one of the three guests.
“Now, look here, young man,” says the.
gnest, who has become more and rhore sus
picions every moment, “just tell me what’s
the reason of this long delay in getting our
dinner, and here’s a quarter for you.”
“It will be all right now,” says the boy
reassuringly. “You will be served direct
ly. They were a little late in bringing the
barrel over from the Metropolitan hotel.”

Hamlet,
There was a little college paper
flying around town yesterday enti
tled the University Bumble Bee, that 1
ha*J attracted a great deal of atten
tion and comment, from the fact that
between its hnmorous lines there
seemed to lark a serious significance.
Enough of its authorship is known
to place the responsibility for its ex-
istcnce to the Sonior Class that
received their diplomas from the
University Wednesday. In fact re
liable authority says that it is the
unanimous voices of the twenty-eight
members of that class, with the f x-
ception of a baker’s dossn.
The authors of the Bumble Bee
have spent four years in the Univer
sity of Georgia under the present
administration.
They are men who have arrived at
the years of discretion.
They are alumni of the University,
having completed their education
and received their diplomas Wednes
day.
In their publication they charged
the administration of their Alma ma
ter with the following evils:
Favoritism.
Nepotism.
' Tyrannical rule.
Non-enforcement of the laws as I the costliest laces and'mnterinls forliis

There are some things contained
in the publication relative to indi
vidual members of the faculty that
in the knowledge of The Banner are
overdrawn and UDjust, but as for the
main evils complained of we know
nothing. Still, the wide dissemina
tion theso charges arc receiving, and
the 8ourco of their authority, and the
plain emphatic English in which
they are made, is going to create a
sensation, and may take a more se
rious turn than some people look for.
If the evils exist they should be
remedied, and that in short order.
If not, then those againstwh om the
charges rest should he vindicated.
!• Certain it ia that by a large ma
jority of the people the Bumble Bee
was not accepted as a joke, and it
did not pretend to be a joke, but a
** statement ol specified facts. It might
be a good move foi the proper au
thorities of the college management

mittee from the Board of Trustees.
