A Despondent Wife Tool Laudanum.
Cleveland, O., June 23.—At San
dusky Mrs. Robert Hogan, in the pres
ence of her husband, swallowed an
onnee of laudanum and then sat down
to await the effects of tho drug. Hogan
made no effort to get a physician and to
n neighbor who happened to call, he
said he was willing that Ins wife should
die. An alarm was given and efforts
made to savb the woman’s life, but she
will probably die. The Hogans had
been married but two weeks and the
cause of the attempt at suicide is not
known.

Big Fire In New Brunswick.
Fredericton, June 22.—A boy play
ing with a toy pistol in a barn in Gib
son, opposite this city, started a fire
that burned 80 dwellings, two churches,
the Canadian Pacific railway station,
six general stores afid two public halls.
The fire practically burned itself out.
One hundred and twenty-five families
are homeless.

Knoxville, Tenu., June 22.—Isaac
McMahon, a young son of Colonel J
McMahon, living near Granbridge, in
Jefferson county, was cut to pieces by a
mower. He was in the seat cutting bay
and was by some means thrown off.
His family is one of the most prominent
in the county.

Roberts, formerly business manager of the
Sparta Iibmaelite. who was mads chief of

he is going to make the man he defeated
for the place of his assistant Dr. F. D.
Hestei, of Arlington, V*.. was his chief
competitor and in the way of endorsement
outdid the Georgia man, but in the show
down he lost Mr. Roberts said this even
ing that there were many applicants for the
place, bnt he had decided to reo end
the Virginia mm. The salary of the as
sistant is *1,800 a year.
Colonel F. 0. Ainesworth, W E. Covert*
superintendent of Ford’s theatre building,
and Francis 8ass, appeared voluntary in
the criminal court before Judge MtCor-
mas today and gave bail in the sum of
*10,000 each for their appearance before
the grand jury. Mr. Dent, the contractor,
was not able to appear in conrt but the
sureties went to his bouse and qualified
there in the same amount.
The court of inquiry to determine the
responsibility for the Ford's theatre disas
ter will convene this week, probably on

rious illness of Associate Justice
Blatcbford, at the Newport cottage

Macon, Jnne 22.—Macon has made a
decided and wonderful step in material
progress and internal improvement. By
an overwhelming majority the people
voted for the issuance of *200,000 of
bonds to bnild a system of sanitary sew
ers. There was a mere handful of vote,
against the bonds. After the elections
a Dress band serenaded The Macon Tel
egraph for its work in behalf of sewers
and several speeches were made. There
was no fnss or excitement of any kind.

from Iron River state that tbe fires
there have been disoovered'toLe the
work of an incendiary. Another attempt
was made to set fire to a house on the out-
' skirts of Iron River. The fire depart
ment has been on dnty night and day,
and it is thought that the worst is over.
The total losses by fires daring the past
week will reach $2,000,000.
